I do agree, that is ageist @Brefugee. However, I think they raise a point there - how do people.of a younger ge station relate to the monarch? Do they need to? Does people's perception of their age as a barrier or weakness inhibit their capacity to appear relevant or functional?

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 06/12/2020 15:38

@EmilyinWolverhampton YES to the royal dogs idea! I had this idea a while ago but instead proposed a Royal Plank of wood. However, the nation would fall in love with dogs over planks, I can't see any downside to your idea.
The royal Human family can be pensioned off to live our their lives in peace and fawn over the royal dogs like the rest of us.

LakieLady · 06/12/2020 15:40

@Diva66

No, we should abolish the Monarchy after the queen dies.
I feel exactly the same, so I voted no.

It's a ridiculous institution to have in the 21st century.

Livingtothefull · 06/12/2020 15:41

No, I think the monarchy should be abolished as it is an anachronism.

Brefugee · 06/12/2020 15:46

how do people.of a younger ge station relate to the monarch?

they don't have to - they can push for a republic if they feel so strongly. But you can't support a monarchy, no matter how old you are, and then want to choose who comes next.

LindaEllen · 06/12/2020 15:48

No because it's not like the bloody X Factor, you cannot pick and choose. For those who are shouting about abolishing the monarchy, I assume you've done plenty of research about how that would impact our country financially? Because I cannot imagine you'd have reached this conclusion blindly - nobody is that stupid!

VinylDetective · 06/12/2020 16:05

Princess Diana said years ago that her fortune teller told her it would go straight to William. And she sounded convined of it too

They weren’t much of a fortune teller, having failed to warn her about getting into cars with drunk drivers.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 06/12/2020 16:07

Princess Diana fortune teller didn’t feel the need to tell her to wear a seat belt

HazelWong · 06/12/2020 16:25

I don't really understand why William is popular - lazy rich kid to me!

Charles definitely has his faults but I don't doubt that there are things he cares about

Me too. I reckon that will help him with the public (me anyway)

To me, any financial implications (which are always argued over) come second to the fact we have a totally undemocratic institution at the head of our country.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 06/12/2020 17:14

No one is shouting, only in your head us there shouting
It’s a logical & compelling argument to get shot of royalty

TheKeatingFive · 06/12/2020 17:18

We’d be able to save the Sovereign grant for starters. Them open up the state owned palaces to the public on a much bigger scale. Financially it would be very positive.

VinylDetective · 06/12/2020 17:21

There’s no logical or compelling argument for getting rid of the monarchy. Just people who don’t want one. Fortunately they’re in the minority, even in the 18-24 age group.

GrimDamnFanjo · 06/12/2020 17:24

I'd rather not have a monarchy but abolition is unlikely - how would this be decided?
So as such we follow the rules and no abdication.
It would be impossible for the queen to have more than 10 years left realistically (unless she really is a lizard) which would probably give Charles about 15 yrs as King, with William on the throne in his 50s.
(I'm aware my maths is a bit dodgy but I'm taking cues from longliving family members and them able to access the very best in medical care.

PurpleDaisies · 06/12/2020 17:25

There’s no logical or compelling argument for getting rid of the monarchy.

So if Britain had no history of a monarchy, you think people would be happy with one family being chosen as the ones where all future kings and queens came from? You think that’s a good way of doing it?

Referendum.

Irrelevant. We do have a history of monarchy going back over 1,000 years. I’m happy to preserve an intrinsic part of our culture along with the majority of the UK population.
luckylavender · 06/12/2020 17:31

@Kljnmw3459 - Edward is hardly non controversial.

MarshaBradyo · 06/12/2020 17:33

Full stats here You Gov

The Queen is very popular but it drops a lot with Charles. But younger ones go up again.

TheKeatingFive · 06/12/2020 17:33

Longevity isn’t much of an argument. Why cling to things that are obviously problematic because they’re old?

Monarch makes total sense for society in the Middle Ages, where uncertainty around who’s in charge would lead to unrest.

In the modern era it’s really embarrassing to cling to such an outdated notion. Can’t we function as modern humans? We’re supposed to believe these people are ‘divinely appointed’. Seriously? What utter horseshit.

It would help if the family themselves weren’t so deeply mediocre.

PurpleDaisies · 06/12/2020 17:34

Irrelevant. We do have a history of monarchy going back over 1,000 years. I’m happy to preserve an intrinsic part of our culture along with the majority of the UK population.

And you’re the one saying there’s no logical reason to abolish the monarchy. “Because that’s the way we’ve always done it” is not a logical reason to continue with it.

TheKeatingFive · 06/12/2020 17:35

It’ll be VERY interesting to see what happens to support when Charles takes the reigns.

I find many people misclassify their respect for the Queen as an individual as support for monarchy.

veeeeh · 06/12/2020 17:36

Like the rest of us, they have done NOTHING really for nine months. We are still paying for their privilege and it goes to show, they are just appendages to the public purse end of day.

Bet they will not have to worry about heating bills or Brexit impacts either. So keep paying your taxes folks to make sure they are all OK.

BananaPop2020 · 06/12/2020 17:36

@VinylDetective as pointed out earlier, the totally undemocratic and irrelevant nature of the monarchy is a perfect logical and compelling argument for getting shot.
