No, that guy has been waiting for his "birthright" his entire life and he's now pensionable age. To take that away from him, unless he actually wanted it, would be unimaginably cruel. Regardless of the story The Crown is trying to sell everyone right now

See, this is where it gets complicated.
I've never seen The Crown.
Have no desire to.
However, I am old enough to remember the media at that time of Charles and Diana 80s (whether or not that was all entirely accurate is another story)
Nothing to do with Netflix interpretations.
From what I have heard though seems like is along the same track as back then.

Tootsietootie · 05/12/2020 23:12

No because if you are stupid enough to believe in the monarchy then you are stupid enough to stick to the unbelievable belief that God chooses the royal family by the decided line.

thenightsky · 05/12/2020 23:14

Watch netflix Victoria and her 9 children. Then watch The Last Tsar of Russia. Then you'll understand how heritory monarchy works and how inbred they all actually are.

NiceGerbil · 05/12/2020 23:23

As many PPs say, that's not how it works.

I'm not keen on the royal family but looking around the world the whole president thing seems pretty hit and miss as well...

PurpleDaisies · 05/12/2020 23:25

Presidents aren’t usually chosen because of who their dad is.

The fact that our society allows its head of state to be determined in such an undemocratic way is an embarrassment.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 05/12/2020 23:28

You know that if Charles abdicates, it wouldn't go to William it would go to Andrew? And nobody wants that.

Poor Charlie has served the longest apprenticeship known to man, give the fella a chance

NiceGerbil · 05/12/2020 23:29

I don't really want to have to vote for extra people and it's always political and. Yeah CBA.

NiceGerbil · 05/12/2020 23:30

I mean I'd rather have Charles than Nigel farage or something.

AndcalloffChristmas · 05/12/2020 23:30

I would personally choose to abolish the monarchy if it were my choice. Which it’s not.

If we’re going to have an hereditary monarchy, though, it works the way it works. Charles is the heir. We don’t get to choose who comes next.

AndcalloffChristmas · 05/12/2020 23:32

You know that if Charles abdicates, it wouldn't go to William it would go to Andrew? And nobody wants that.

^^
That’s just incorrect. It goes to the next in line, which is William. If he chose to abdicate, which I don’t think he would.

Iamthewombat · 05/12/2020 23:32

King Tampax? I don’t think so

I have laughed many times today but this was the biggest laugh of all, thanks!

Someone upthread said that the monarchy is not the X Factor.

Why not??? I could get behind that. We’ve had it’s a Royal Knockout. Why not a televised competition to be the next monarch?

Events:

Crown wearing

Shaking hands and saying, “have you come far?”

Spending loads of our cash on doing up their palaces

Making a gin & it

Preaching about being kind to the environment

Going to Pizza Express (Woking)

Etc etc.

Charles might not even get through to the judges’ houses round!

PurpleDaisies · 05/12/2020 23:32

@NiceGerbil

I mean I'd rather have Charles than Nigel farage or something.
Why is it always someone crap who is suggested? Why couldn’t it be someone decent? And if it’s not a hereditary role, we could get rid of them.
NiceGerbil · 05/12/2020 23:32

Our prime minister is Boris Johnson...

NiceGerbil · 05/12/2020 23:33

Trump in the us.

It would divide society even more.

PurpleDaisies · 05/12/2020 23:33

@NiceGerbil

Our prime minister is Boris Johnson...
Who we have the option to get rid of at the next election. He is rubbish, but we are not stuck with him until he dies or abdicates.
GlummyMcGlummerson · 05/12/2020 23:35

I really really wish that I'd never heard about the tampon thing. It drops into my conscious now and again and makes me want to wash my brain with domestos

NiceGerbil · 05/12/2020 23:36

I really don't care tbh

Take it up with a royalist.

I used to think bin them now I think meh.

Quaagars · 05/12/2020 23:38

You know that if Charles abdicates, it wouldn't go to William it would go to Andrew? And nobody wants that.

What?
That's a load of rubbish.
William is next in line after Charles.
How do you figure Andrew is next?! Confused

turnitonagain · 05/12/2020 23:39

@Kljnmw3459

If we get to pick and choose I'd say either Edward. He'd be a steady, non-controversial king. Or harry for a woke king. Beatrice or eugenie as a wild card.
How is Harry “woke?”
SunscreenCentral · 05/12/2020 23:39

@Maireas

Mind you, looking around, often presidents aren't much better Confused
Presidents can be absolutely wonderful ; just don’t give them too much power.
We have a lovely President, he is universally adored in Ireland. He’s a vaguely posh leftie Poet with a somewhat ambiguous sexuality to which nobody gives the slightest heed. We love his wife.

When one of the two Áras na h-Eireann (pronounced ahhhhhras na hare-ran - our White House) Bearnese Mountain dogs died recently, we all were very saddened.
Our President is on our side, and we feel it.

G’wan Miggeldy, *tá tu go háilinn ar fad

*thaw too gaw haul-een err fod = you’re fabulous

Merry Christmas to any mumsnetters who have just now learned their first Irish-Gaelic phrase Xmas Smile

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 05/12/2020 23:39

The whole system of hereditary monarchy is an anachronism but unless we're going to abolish it, then Charles gets to be king.

PodgeBod · 05/12/2020 23:41

I think if the monarchy wants to survive, Charles should pass it onto William. I was born in the early 90's, we have had an old monarch my entire life. Passing the Crown from one very elderly person to another pensioner is just unappealing. There is nothing interesting or dynamic there. I think if the monarchy is to continue, they should normalise abdication and passing onto the next generation to remain relevant.

DdraigGoch · 05/12/2020 23:47

@BefuddledPerson

Maybe we should vote on it, instead of this hereditary idea? Could even open it up more widely to other candidates. Might have to change the title from King, how about something like President?
This sort of attitude is how we ended up with Boaty McBoatface.
TibetanTerrier · 05/12/2020 23:49

I wouldn't wait until Lizzie dies, I'd get rid of the whole bloody lot of them tomorrow.

baubling · 05/12/2020 23:51

If we abolish the monarchy we would have to choose a president.

Just imagine how well that would go.
