@theresagiantonthebeach

many years ago (before william ) I read a prediction some where that Charles would never be king. ...
Princess Diana said years ago that her fortune teller told her it would go straight to William. And she sounded convined of it too. It will be interedting to see if that plays out... or if she just had a very convincing fortune teller. I'm not particularly bothered about the monarchy but think Charles is a better person than William. He has lobbied for environmental issues for years. William on the other hand just seems a bit blah and not particularly interesting. No real ideas of any value other that occassional sound bites.
LadyJaye · 06/12/2020 01:18

Betty's alright, and God knows she's been committed, but just get rid when she shuffles off this mortal coil.

As for all those clutching pearls at the horror of a president as a head of state? waves casually in the direction of Ireland, where it seems to work well

Anyway, I'm Scottish, and we have no outstanding claim to or interest in the throne currently warmed by the bottoms of the house of Mountbatten, so, short of some Jacobite weirdo throwing their hat in the ring, we'll be out of this in the next five years or so.

Heyahun · 06/12/2020 01:18

Charles might be dead before old queenie anyway

But yeah the whole organisation needs to be wound down tbh what a joke

Topseyt · 06/12/2020 01:20

@GlummyMcGlummerson

You know that if Charles abdicates, it wouldn't go to William it would go to Andrew? And nobody wants that.

Poor Charlie has served the longest apprenticeship known to man, give the fella a chance

That is incorrect. William is Charles's heir and inherits after him, whether that is caused by the death of Charles or by his abdication.

Next in line are, I think, William and Kate's three children, George, Charlotte and Louis.

Andrew is a pretty long way down the line, thankfully. I actually think he should be removed from it once and for all because of the Epstein débâcle. He is such a twat.

DdraigGoch · 06/12/2020 01:20
@DdraigGoch...THat goes back to out very beginnings. John Adams was our 2nd President and his son John Quincy Adam's was our 6th President.
Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt were 5th cousins and Eleanor Roosevelt was Theodore's neice.
Jeb Busch was never very nearly a President. Not at all.
There was never nepotism in those instances. They were voted in.Not given any special treatment.
So each of them became President solely on merit and weren't helped in any way by the fact that they came from political families?

Iamthewombat · 06/12/2020 01:21

short of some Jacobite weirdo throwing their hat in the ring

Please, please let this happen. I’m seeing Alan Breck Stewart from Kidnapped scrapping with William over the crown.

Topseyt · 06/12/2020 01:34

They were from political families, but they had to stand for nominations and then run for election in the usual way.

Some of our own current crop of politicians are the children of previous ones. Examples are Stephen Kinnock, or Hillary Benn. I guess the family name did their election chances no harm, but they weren't nominated by their parents and inherited nothing.

CatholicKidston · 06/12/2020 01:40

If we did get to choose a new head of state, I think I'd like it to be Monty Don. He's a pair of safe hands.

Wandafishcake · 06/12/2020 01:47

Lol ot’s not the big brother house where you get to vote them out 😂

I reckon King Charles III will be our last king.

It’ll be about 2050, and by then we’ll be more than ready to bid farewell to the Monarchy. We’re not quite there yet. But we’ll get there.

Wandafishcake · 06/12/2020 01:48

2050 when he dies, I mean.

ShirleyShirleyShirley · 06/12/2020 01:49

@BlackBucketOfCheese

No, monarchy should be abolished when Liz pops her clogs. A country with a monarchy has no place in modern day society, nor should it have a place on the global stage. Unpack it and send them packing.
The royal family cost around £65million per year. They bring in over £1.5billion. Abolishing hem would be daft.

I like having our riyal family, we have a fascinating history. I likecCharles for his environmental credentials. He should get the choice to be king, but I think this stupid Netflix series is being taken as fact and is destroying his popularity and I think he will pass on it.

turnitonagain · 06/12/2020 02:11

When compared to a system where the head of state is literally chosen because of who they were born to and in what order - yes being elected by the public is getting it on merit.

NiceGerbil · 06/12/2020 02:32

Our head of state has to be politically neutral though. It's a totally different set up to the States. No point in comparing.

I used to think sack them off but the alternative sounds like a pita as well.

There'd be a lot to sort out. Quite a few countries have Queen as head of state. They'd need to agree etc. The church (I'm an atheist but that would need to be sorted). Obviously all the crown jewels etc and palaces would need to be dismantled/ museumed etc.

And in the end that family would still own vast tracts of real estate so would be super powerful AND no longer need to be apolitical, scrutinised etc.

I'm not a big fan or anything but tbh I can't get that worked up about ditching them.

1forAll74 · 06/12/2020 03:13

You can't abolish the monarchy, and Charles will be the king, he could have at least 25 years being so, if his health holds up. He will be well suited for the role as King.

ilovesooty · 06/12/2020 03:27

@Iamthewombat

Andrew would have to knock off 7 relatives to get his hands on it.

Let me be the first of many to say: I wouldn’t put it past him!

He's probably watching "Kind Hearts and Coronets" and taking notes.
Fruggalo · 06/12/2020 03:35

Everyone who says it should pass to William: that’s not how it works. Literally the moment the queen has had her final breath, Charles is king. Monarchy isn’t about selecting the best person from a vaguely public spirited rich family, it’s about the divine inherited nature of king/queen dom. and if you think that sounds utterly bonkers, well that’s what makes me a Republican. Many candidates overtime have been unsuited to the phrase “the king/queen is dead; long live the king/queen” but you don’t get to choose..

OffredOfjune · 06/12/2020 03:52

I don't see the royal family going anywhere anytime soon

GroundAlmonds · 06/12/2020 04:01

It’s a hereditary monarchy, not a game show.

GroundAlmonds · 06/12/2020 04:03

Blimey. At least the Ascoine-Gascoynes (or whatever they were called) were all adults. Shock

Skipsurvey · 06/12/2020 04:10

Poor Charles, he is having to wait so long. it should be charles of course, why on earth not? it is not the X factor

If the Queen died tomorrow Charles would really struggle with a coronation in the middle of a pandemic though!

MartiniDry · 06/12/2020 04:33

William, Charles, or the bloke who drives the 8.39 to St Pancras can be your next king if you like.
None will ever be "my" king.

GroundAlmonds · 06/12/2020 04:49

If only we got a personal opt out like that.

It is actually kind of irritating that all of this energy wasted by people blathering on about wanting to choose their favourite royal as monarch, I’m a Celebrity style, could be much better used discussing whether we want a monarchy at all.

daisypond · 06/12/2020 07:29

@Skipsurvey

The coronation would be a long time later - not in the middle of a pandemic. The Queen’s coronation was nearly a year and a half after her father had died.
