Yup what @Cocomarine said - the whole point is noone gets to choose (unless Charles abdicates of course). Looking at it objectively, and I'm neither royalist or republican) can see the royal family naturally reducing in profile over the next 50 years. No big bang 'get rid of' (the logistics of that would be costly in itself) but their importance naturally diminishing. One thing I'm more hazy on/be interested to understand - land ownership and monies ie is/can the monarch be Independently wealthy.

thenightsky · 05/12/2020 22:23

We don't get to choose. Its hereditary, anointed by God.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 05/12/2020 22:25

As a republican I'd get shot of the lot of them. It’s a repugnant antiquated institution

topcat2014 · 05/12/2020 22:26

You know if we abolish the monarchy we would end up with president Tony Blair don't you?

Quaagars · 05/12/2020 22:28

Should William be our next king

I'm thinking aloud!
I'm torn -
Was going to be all yes he should but then think Charles should.
It's all he's ever known.
Groomed (for want of of a better word) for that role.
Then again, should that laud over who comes across as genuinely decent and nothing has spread into news like it did with Charles and Camilla.
Willam seems OK whereas Charles and Camilla never did.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 05/12/2020 22:28

No,that’s your daft hyperbole invent a story as a cautionary tale why we shouldn’t get shot of the repugnant royals

CounsellorTroi · 05/12/2020 22:28

@topcat2014

So what? He would not have the same power as a Prime Minister Blair, as long as we didn't have an executive presidency.
theresagiantonthebeach · 05/12/2020 22:29

many years ago (before william ) I read a prediction some where that Charles would never be king. ...

Lardlizard · 05/12/2020 22:31

Davespecifico I never knew that ! 😵😡

Brighterthansunflowers · 05/12/2020 22:34

I don’t think Charles would ever abdicate, his entire life has been geared towards him eventually being king. I also don’t think he or William would want William to be king while his children are still so young. I know the family is hugely in the spotlight as it is, but I think it would be even worse if William was king and George the next in line.

CharitySchmarity · 05/12/2020 22:35

I don't think we should have a monarch at all, but as long as we do have one, I don't think we should mess about with the succession (apart from the very sensible recent change to allow girls to take precedence over younger brothers, which should have happened long ago). Charles should understand that he is free to abdicate if he wants to, but there shouldn't be any pressure. For what it's worth, I do think Anne and Edward would both make interesting monarchs and would probably keep scandal to a minimum.

Maireas · 05/12/2020 22:36

I think Elton John should be the next Queen. He'd do a great job and carry off the bling.

IDespairOfTheHumanRace · 05/12/2020 22:39

Well, since old Chas's whole aim in life has been spent waiting for mater to die, it would be a shame to deny him, at the eleventh hour, the opportunity to actually start work.

But, yes, agree with the majority, the whole ghastly gallimaufry of anachronistic, inbred non entities have no place any longer in a modern world - withdraw their benefits and sling them out on the street, complete with corgis, so they can join the unfortunate number of their subjects living in such a manner and being forced to rely on the kindness of strangers to survive.

Lardlizard · 05/12/2020 22:39

I still can’t get over eltons face at Harry’s wedding, when Micheal curry was ranting !!

So funny !!

Should William be our next king ?

Maireas · 05/12/2020 22:46

Well I'm sure the Rev. Curry wasn't the most ridiculous bishop ever to preach in that Chapel. Perhaps Elton could take on the preaching as well.

pigsDOfly · 05/12/2020 22:47

It's not a case of Charles waking up one morning and deciding to pass the role to William. How would that work?

Surely in order to abdicate he'd need to become king in the first place.

Samcro · 05/12/2020 22:49

Yabu
Pc has been waiting all his life, to give it to workshy w&k would be dreadful.

PurpleDaisies · 05/12/2020 22:49

No, the monarchy should end with the queen.

WanderingMilly · 05/12/2020 22:50

No, I think Charles should have his turn. I like Charles, I think he is very clued up about environmental issues, global warming and the like. And William needs the chance to be a father to his family while they are young in any case....

TomBradysLeftKneecap · 05/12/2020 22:52

No, that guy has been waiting for his "birthright" his entire life and he's now pensionable age. To take that away from him, unless he actually wanted it, would be unimaginably cruel. Regardless of the story The Crown is trying to sell everyone right now.

DianaT1969 · 05/12/2020 22:57

Abolish the monarchy after Queen Elizabeth. There is no role or reason for them in today's world. If anybody is unsure, imagine if Elizabeth had given birth to Andrew first. We'd have him as King.
Abolish the 800+ people who sit in the House of Lords claiming £3-5k in expenses every month. What country in the world needs 800+ unelected people in the "upper house" ?
The UK needs to give its head a wobble m

Wendyhaus · 05/12/2020 23:05

So when the queen passes on I assume Charles can not be forced to be king? It is his choice to accept the role, which is assumed that is what he wants. His gt.gt. grandfather Edward V11 ascended the throne as an old (at that time 60's was considered old) and unhealthy man and was only on the seat for 9 years so Charles could easily reign for a few years before his expiry date pops up, then it would be William in his 40's taking on the crown.
I think it won't be too long before we all find out. I would not bow and scrape to any one of them but nor would I give them the middle finger (well not to their faces). Intelligent adults nervously learning how to curtsey and speak to royals just makes me laugh.
To answer the OP, I am not bovvered.

1Morewineplease · 05/12/2020 23:08

The monarchy should be left to their own devices.
Throughout the centuries they've raided other nations to build up their wealth then they've almost bankrupted the nation to fuel their spendthrift ways ( Charles I , George IV)
They should become a mere tourist attraction.
How has her maj accumulated so much wealth and a private art collection second to none?
Who paid for it?
Who paid for Sandringham, Castle of Mey, Balmoral etc...

Most dads manage to work and bring up young children.
