I am off to the Maldives. It is awesome. I am going on a plane. Then when we come back we are off to Switzerland, skiing. I have missed the world.

There is no reason for my post except I am excited!

As someone who hasn’t seen their family since March I hope you enjoy your holiday.

Holidays should have been banned this year and places shut till we have sorted the vaccines out.

userxx · 08/12/2020 22:52

Holidays should have been banned this year and places shut till we have sorted the vaccines out.

And they'd then just magically reopen would they? How would that work? I'm pretty sure some of the far flung places will not be receiving financial help from the government live we've received. How will those people live?

Meraas · 08/12/2020 23:57

I know this is going to sound really bitter (Grin), but I've been to the Maldives (a few years ago mind), and those pics look, well, a bit crappy! The pics I have are of golden soft sands, whereas it all looks very choppy in OP's pics.

starfro · 09/12/2020 00:08

Wow, the jealous comments on this thread!

Have a great time OP, looks amazing and the skiing will be great fun too.

Why don't we just write off what's left of the travel industry? Are you including UK holidays in that as well?
JamSarnie · 09/12/2020 07:38

The problem is when people are happy to make a restriction to their own lives they can't stand it when others don't follow suit. It's like the threads when they belt out the 'we must stop flying because I have decided it's soooo bad for the environment even though I used to do it'. I have made the sacrifice and so should you.

Enjoy your holiday OP. I would be there with you if I could.

Tumbleweed101 · 09/12/2020 07:47

I can understand exactly what the OP means. Suddenly losing the freedom of travel is a huge thing, even if you don’t usually travel much. Just knowing you can jump on a plane and go somewhere has always been there and suddenly not being able to do that was one of the things that hit me hard, even knowing wasn’t going to be travelling this year anyway.

Covid the illness is bad but the changes to the world are having an even bigger in impact.

notimagain · 09/12/2020 07:52

Why don't we just write off what's left of the travel industry?

It really does sounds like that's what some people want doesn't it?

I think a combination of furlough and/or the ability of some companies to operate using WFH has shielded some people from some of the economic realities of covid.

Behind the scenes in many industries jobs have been quietly going... If a relaxing of restrictions and/or the vaccine don't to start to generate increased "footfall" for the travel industry (and also possibly in "industries" such as restaurant and arts and entertainments) there's going to be an absolute ***storm of redundancies by Easter at the latest...

Fluffybutter · 09/12/2020 08:16

Some of the comments are just wow ..
hope you enjoy your holiday op, we got away in august and I’m so glad we did!
Can’t wait for a more far flung holiday next year .

cologne4711 · 09/12/2020 08:16

Not remotely jealous - I don't like beach holidays so you'd have to pay me to go to the Maldives.

Switzerland would be nice, but ski-ing is horrible for the environment.

Fluffybutter · 09/12/2020 08:32

@cologne4711 then why post then ?
Then there’s the other poster saying the pictures don’t look as good as when she went .. yeah, you don’t sound bitter AT ALL

dontdisturbmenow · 09/12/2020 08:39

She's touched a nerve with you hasn't she 🤣. Bitterness is never a good look
Not all. Like OP, I am very lucky to be able to enjoy luxury holidays every year, but I don't need to boast about it to friends or strangers and ravel in the jealousy of others to make me feel good.

Kerberos · 09/12/2020 08:45

Thanks OP. Your post gave me a smile on this cold day, and some hope that life is returning to some normality. Shame my budget is more Margate than Maldives but hope you have a wonderful time.

AngeloMysterioso · 09/12/2020 08:54

Some of the comments are just wow ..

It’s the thread that’s just wow... OP started it for literally no other reason than to boast about her holiday, to a place most people can only dream of visiting, followed by another holiday on the way home, at a time when a lot of people are struggling just to get from one day to the next?

Fucking seriously???

I am not try to boast, but if you are a traveller, the shrinking world has broken my heart.

You are trying to boast. The purpose of this thread is to boast. That’s all it is.

But I’m so glad you’ve made it through this heartbreaking holiday-less time, OP. It must have been so hard for you. I can’t begin to imagine.

I actually can’t begin to imagine, because trips to the Maldives and Switzerland are not a thing for me, never have been, and never will be. Not being able to go on holiday this year hasn’t been particularly difficult for me, because it’s the norm. As it is for most people.

Some of us have actual problems.

userxx · 09/12/2020 08:57

@dontdisturbmenow You sound miserable and bitter. It's nice to hear someone being excited about something, after the year we've had it makes a nice change, I'm sick to death of people moaning. No need to suck the fun out of someone else's joy.

chocolatesaltyxmaspudballs · 09/12/2020 09:38

I for one am very happy to see a happy thread for a change about someone getting some enjoyment out of life. Makes me think about starting to plan my 2021 holidays (yes, I WILL be having more than one!)

Some people just seem to want to wallow in misery.

Iamsososoexcited · 09/12/2020 16:48

Ok, I am going to answer the boasting question.

I think sometimes there is a belief that boasting comes from a negative place. That the person boasting has had an easy ride, life has been a breeze and they want everyone to know how awesome they are.

This post is actually the opposite. I did not write the OP to boast but to share a more simple emotion, that of glee. Unbridled glee.

I still can’t believe how lucky I am that despite having cerebral palsy I found an awesome man to love me; that despite inherent complications I gave birth to two healthy amazing kids; that I had a career which has afforded me a fantastic standard of living; that despite being redundant due to Covid, I found another job that interests me. I am lucky. I get that. Other people are not lucky and so I will always do my bit to help.

The Maldives is not “off the beaten track” exploring but it is amazing and if you can afford the cheapest holiday here (biyadhoo is £1100pp for a week) then go for it. The colours are breathtaking.

I hope that explains. Xx

I found the thread amusing. esp the comments about holiday clothes allowed out of wardrobe. Send us some sun!

Todayissunny · 09/12/2020 16:57

Have a lovely time OP. But I wish you weren't skiing in Switzerland. I live there and won't be skiing this year I don't think (I've already seen the crowds at the ski lifts (a lot of them are reported to be brits). I haven't seen family for a long time (only briefly seen any of my family for more than a year and half) and we are now being stopped from seeing family we hoped we could see over over Christmas as well.

RedditFreak · 09/12/2020 17:20

Ooh. Me and the kids watched the live webcams on the Maldives!!! If you walk along the beach. Give us a wave!! ❤️❤️

RedditFreak · 09/12/2020 17:32

Simon caulder. Ha.

TrickyD · 09/12/2020 17:32

We have had two fabulous holidays on Biyadhoo . It is not a glamorous island, we used to say it was like a very posh French camp site, but it is wonderful.

Taking the whole family and going for the all-inclusive option and staying for two weeks is not cheap even at Biya, but it is worth every penny.

Where are you, Iamsososoexcited? Biya or somewhere else?

tallduckandhandsome · 09/12/2020 18:08

I had a career which has afforded me a fantastic standard of living; that despite being redundant due to Covid, I found another job that interests me. I am lucky. I get that. Other people are not lucky and so I will always do my bit to help.

But you're not helping, you're boasting. Yes, with glee, but still boasting. It's in poor taste.

userxx · 09/12/2020 20:09

@Iamsososoexcited Such a shame you've felt the need to justify yourself to the miserable fuckers, there really was no need.

I think a lot of people on this thread could do with a bit of joy in their lives. Fun sponges.

ClownCloud · 09/12/2020 20:47

Have a great time Op.
Lots of people have had an awful time, the Op having a wonderful holiday doesn't make other folks lives worse.
I'm jealous, I once saw a whale shark in The Maldives, it's my perfect holiday memory.
