I am off to the Maldives. It is awesome. I am going on a plane. Then when we come back we are off to Switzerland, skiing. I have missed the world.

There is no reason for my post except I am excited!

So jealous! Have an amazing time!

TreaterAnita · 05/12/2020 21:49

God, I’m properly envious. I’d love to be getting on a flight right now. Hope you have a great time.

RosieCockle · 05/12/2020 21:54

Where in Switzerland are you going?

Tomorrowisanotherdayyouknow · 05/12/2020 21:54

@Gherkin14

Sorry but an nhs dr working in icu I find this really irresponsible. I assume you had a covid test prior to flying...and despite being negative you could still be a carrier. A carrier to somewhere with a much less efficient healthcare system than here...what about the local population? Perhaps it’s just a bit of jealously on my part after a long day in covid icu and having cancelled some special holidays this year voluntarily to help minimise the spread but also because getting leave right now is pretty impossible. My colleagues and I are at breaking point, we’ve had covid since February. People (including young and healthy) are still dying. Just stay at home
Flowers and thanks for all your hard work @Gherkin14

I hope there is an end in sight with the vaccine.

TimeForLunch · 05/12/2020 22:00

Sounds amazing, have a wonderful time! It is so good to hear of people travelling again. I am booked to go to the Maldives in March and cannot wait.

roarfeckingroarr · 05/12/2020 22:03

Have a wonderful time. I miss the world and travel too.

roarfeckingroarr · 05/12/2020 22:04

@Obbydoo the PP is not referring to missing a week in sodding Tenerife ffs. If you travel widely and regularly it's so utterly depressing that the world is increasingly shut off.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 05/12/2020 22:07

Wow. Lucky you. Your life sounds a million miles away from mine. This year has been shit for many reasons and missing holidays to far flung destinations doesn’t feature in my top 100.

I had a great 1 night break in our tent in Wales, 1 hour from home this year before a storm came along and we had to pack up and head home 4 days early.

I’m going to try to explore our amazing world closer to home again next year if our finances allow and annual leave of 2 key workers coincides.

Katjolo · 05/12/2020 22:07

Enjoy!

yelyah22 · 05/12/2020 22:12

I think your tone is a bit flippant and I wouldn't be going on holiday right now if you paid me, but hope you have a nice time.

Also, people in this thread: 'liking and being able to afford going on holiday' is not a personality type, FYI. I hate people who call themselves 'travellers' as some kind of special little title when what you mean is 'tourist at popular destinations a few times a year' (unless you literally just live out of a suitcase and travel the world constantly, in which case, fine).

Oreservoir · 05/12/2020 22:14

@Iamsososoexcited. Have a great time. Come back and tell us all about it.

WillSantaBeComingToTown · 05/12/2020 22:14

I have had over 100 flights and 250 nights in hotels cancelled since March.

I miss my old life.

(The Maldives would be hell of earth to me but each to their own)

ineedaholidaynow · 05/12/2020 22:21

You can still be incubating the virus, I would hate to take it to another country

QuestionableMouse · 05/12/2020 22:24

And yet I've just had to cancel my nephews' trip to the Santa railway because we're not allowed to cross into a lower tier area. It's a wonky world right now ☹️☹️

daisypond · 05/12/2020 22:30

I’m sorry, I don’t think anyone should be wilfully travelling on holiday (x2) right now, let alone posting about it in some gleeful way. I’m embarrassed for you.

NannyGythaOgg · 05/12/2020 22:34

Enjoy
And ignore the haters. People die every year, people die unnecessarily every year, people die of curable things every year - in fact every day. On average 450 people die every single day of cancer. No one ever suggests everyone's fun has to stop because people are dying of cancer.

You, like everyone, will have your share of loss. You are getting away now. Enjoy, enjoy and enjoy again.

TheOtherMaryBerry · 05/12/2020 22:37

QuestionableMouse

Quite. I just want to take my 3 year old to the train museum. Not allowed.

I hate people who call themselves 'travellers' as some kind of special little title

Yeah, this annoys me. Rather like insisting that you have a special kind of 'wanderlust.' Which means you have the finances and opportunity to travel. I used to have a friend who judged me for being boring because I'd never been anywhere. She was much more interesting... definitely nothing to do with all the money she'd inherited.

Obbydoo · 05/12/2020 22:40

Have you been? The Maldives is essentially sea and sun. It's hardly the height of culture, it's a beach holiday!

For those of us that enjoy travel and experiencing different cultures, I totally understand that it's sad not being able to go. But to call it 'heart breaking' when compared to the genuine heart break that thousands of people are enduring is vile. As someone else has said, she should be truly embarrassed by her gloating and totally misjudged princess-like post.

backinthebox · 05/12/2020 23:02

Well, I for one am extremely grateful for people like the OP keeping me in a job. I’ve had to do some fairly astonishing things this year in my line of work - instead of taking people on holiday I’ve found myself flying repatriation flights from Covid hotspots, bring freighters full of PPE and medical supplies home for the NHS, and often operating in complicated and potentially hostile situations. When I do do holiday flights, the islands I take passengers to are desperate for the tourists - there’s no government backed furlough schemes in the Caribbean or the Indian Ocean. The measures out in place to keep Covid out are fairly comprehensive. I’m not embarrassed for the OP at all - I’m looking forward to the day more people are able to go on holiday again.

ThrawnCow · 05/12/2020 23:09

Meh.

DimidDavilby · 05/12/2020 23:12

Stop fucking flying if you love the planet so much. Selfish "travellers".

ineedaholidaynow · 05/12/2020 23:20

@roarfeckingroarr the way the OP is going to the Maldives and then skiing to Switzerland I assume they are a seasoned traveller, it’s not like they are trips of a lifetime. Some people may treat a holiday to Tenerife as their only trip abroad. Are only wealthy people allowed to be broken hearted not being able to travel?

PolkadotGiraffe · 05/12/2020 23:21

Wow. A lot of nasty replies IMO. Most of us can't do this right now, or ever, but does that really mean there's a need to be bitter and unkind? It's not a competition of misery.

I think we should try to be happy for anything that has brought someone some happiness in the shittest of shit years.

Have a lovely time OP. Envy ⬅️ Definitely envy!!! 🌴☀️😆

TheSilentStars · 05/12/2020 23:21

The Swiss are under a lot of pressure from their ski resort neighbours (all of whom are keeping their resorts closed in a further attempt to halt the second wave) to act more responsibly.
