I am off to the Maldives. It is awesome. I am going on a plane. Then when we come back we are off to Switzerland, skiing. I have missed the world.

There is no reason for my post except I am excited!

“Enjoy
And ignore the haters. People die every year, people die unnecessarily every year, people die of curable things every year - in fact every day. On average 450 people die every single day of cancer. No one ever suggests everyone's fun has to stop because people are dying of cancer.

You, like everyone, will have your share of loss. You are getting away now. Enjoy, enjoy and enjoy again.”

@NannyGythaOgg

Your argument is actually pretty insulting.

You do know you can’t catch or infect anyone else with cancer don’t you ? It’s a ridiculous statement . And people care about people who die of cancer as well they are not just a statistic

DingDongDenny · 06/12/2020 18:11

I can't believe people are planning to go skiing after what happened in February. Clearly the Ski resorts provided the perfect environment for spreading the virus. Can't you just give it a rest for one year

What makes you think it will be one year? Nothing to indicate that at all.
Rhine · 06/12/2020 18:13

@chocolatesaltyxmaspudballs

Why should she be ashamed? She's not breaking any laws. Foreign travel is permitted.
It’s not advised unless it’s in exceptional circumstances though. There are still a lot of places you can’t even go to, Australia and NZ for example. What does that tell you?

*What makes you think it will be one year? Nothing to indicate that at all.*

...the vaccine!

A vaccine that maybe only gives 6 months of immunity and will take up to 4 years to roll out in the UK?

How will that work then?
Under 50s won't get the vaccine for at least 18 months according to the government- so many of those who ski? By which time it will be needed in care homes gain? Like the forth bridge

userxx · 06/12/2020 19:46

Why on earth should we be glad for the OP? Her behaviour is awful. She should be ashamed.

I could understand if we were talking about beastiality, but for fuck sake get a grip.

lifebytheby · 06/12/2020 20:39

Urgh, cringe.

People are dying and losing their jobs/livelihoods.

ODFOD.

Why is that more insulting than to pretend that nothing else matters but Covid. People die from flu, - children die from flu a lot more than they do from Covid. People die from all sorts of things. It's so insulting to act like no one ever died before Covid and that only Covid deaths matter. Cancer might not be catching but there have been so many more deaths from cancer this year because of an over reaction to an admittedly nasty virus.

I know more people that have died because of Covid restrictions than I do from Covid itself. BUT for the majority of us life goes on - and if someone is lucky enough to be going away, then good for them. I really really hope you enjoy your holiday Op and ignore all the jealous joy suckers.

BeakyWinder · 07/12/2020 17:47

@TrickyD thank you I will check those out! I would definitely snorkel/dive and swim, but I don't know if I could do it for 10/14 days, but mixed in with some other activities and a few lazy days definitely. Will do some more research!

CheltenhamLady · 07/12/2020 18:07

FGS let someone have some joy.

I would be off like a shot if I didn't have work commitments till after Christmas. The Maldives may not be cultural but as a relaxing break, it will be great.

Sadly, we live in a world full of tragedy, but if you can travel, why wouldn't you?

We will be off travelling in Feb, and again in May and June and September. In fact, as much as possible to compensate for the lost holiday plans in 2020.

Enjoy OP.

HighNoon · 07/12/2020 18:41

Please understand you have a moral obligation to post photos on your social media of beaches, meals, sunsets etc. I love seeing these from people brave enough to take the risk of international travel. My holiday this year has been to the island of Vicarious Living.

PTW1234 · 07/12/2020 18:58

Here is a conundrum a close friend of mine is also in the Maldives. She has suffered incredible loss this year due to covid. She is a low income worker (below national average) and saved incredibly hard for this trip (possibly once in a lifetime one).

She is probably at a lesser risk int he maldives than nipping to tesco. She out right refused to leave the house for 2 weeks prior to leaving as she was worried about the mandatory covid test she had to take before leaving (and being £120 out of pocket for the private test).

A condition of flight home she has to test negative again.

She is on an island with 25 or so other people. She is probably in one of the most covid secure places right now and is enjoying great food, drinks in an actual bar, sunshine etc etc.

I am so so pleased she was able to go (touch and go due to england full lockdown), and I can already tell via our daily FaceTime her mental health has improved significantly. She could of deferred her holiday for free, if it was a trip to the canaries she would most defiantly of done. She will come home to her wfh job (aka forced isolation) and pose minimal risk to those around her (because there isn’t anyone!)

megletthesecond · 07/12/2020 19:07

Never mind it's a pandemic eh.
Couldn't you wait another year?

This pandemic shows who bad a nice life and is determined to rush back to it. It's years since I went out or went abroad. Apart from being stuck with my annoying children it's not been a drama.

I imagine she is the only person on the flight each way then? The only person at the airport? You said safer than popping to tesco.
Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 07/12/2020 20:24

Congratulations OP. I personally don't give a fuck about your holiday.

backinthebox · 07/12/2020 22:27

People are dying and losing their jobs/livelihoods. You realise that one of the worst hit sectors for job losses is aviation, don’t you? The only way people WON’T lose their jobs in that sector is if people begin to travel again. In order to increase confidence in travel, airports, airlines, hotels and resorts have put huge amounts of effort into creating safe ways to travel and be on holiday. I think the majority of people complaining on this thread have not seen the measures out in place for themselves, and are using ‘people losing jobs’ as a reason to justify why no one should go on holiday atm whilst refusing to acknowledge that many people have lost jobs precisely because so few people have been on holiday this year.

Iamsososoexcited · 08/12/2020 03:10

I couldn’t resist...here are a few photos...

It is bliss. Xxx

Well said...and firstly may I say I had to leave my flying job early than planned due to Covid, so I'm slightly Sad, I really hope you are hanging on to yours OK.

I know from former colleagues I am still in touch with it is really tough at the moment and there are a lot of people having sleepless nights worrying about the future..

Anyway onwards - there's a complete lack of logic being displayed by some here.

I really do not see the sense or logic in almost insisting that everybody sits at home and doesn't travel in order to display some sort of empathy or solidarity with those who have lost or are losing jobs.

It's a form of virtue signalling that in reality risks throwing even more people out of work..and we are talking tens of thousands more unemployed, if not more, both in the UK and overseas.

GoldfishParade · 08/12/2020 07:01

You really look like you're living your best life OP. This is really inspirational!

userxx · 08/12/2020 07:44

I hope those swings have been sanitised and the kids are actually allowed to be playing on them......... we"re in the middle of a pandemic don't you know 🤣🤣🤣

It's looks amazing. Just what's needed after this shit year.

backinthebox · 08/12/2020 07:57

@notimagain very sorry to hear you’ve been affected. Are you 1987? 😉 Lot of support there. PM me if this makes you go ‘eh? What?’

There we go folks - real people are losing real livelihoods due to Covid. And still people say we should consider this when we go on holiday 🙄.

Nottherealslimshady · 08/12/2020 08:01

God I miss the world. Were pregnant now too so will be a little while before were going long haul again. Get snorkeling! We swam with sharks and turtles and stingrays just off our deck, absolute heaven.

Maldives then icehotel are our first stops.
