Just that. I rarely use Instagram but found myself scrolling Britney Spears account today. It’s incredibly unnerving. She is clearly very very unwell. I found some of her videos disturbing and hard to watch.

@Zofloramummy you aren’t wrong in that many people with mental illness enjoy sexual relationships. The issue here is that Britney has been legally deemed to lack capacity. That means she is unable to make rational decisions or consent. By its very definition that would make her unable to consent to sex in legal terms. I'm in UK so might be different in USA but here capacity isn't binary. You have to assess every situation every time so one day you may have capacity to decide you want to spend some money and some days you don't, some days you have capacity to make a decision about health care and somedays you don't. It is complicated and from what people have said she has her ups and downs so it is reasonable to assume she does had capacity for certain decisions at times.

@leopardspotsdotdotdot It’s possible she’s at risk of people financially abusing her which is why her finances are controlled. But doesn’t mean she can’t consent to sex. Yes it is very puritanical isn't it.

Britney has a financial and personal conservatorship so whilst she is ‘allowed’ outside she has to be given permission to do so. I am not arguing that she shouldn’t have a relationship, what I’m saying is she has been deemed to lack the ability to make rational decisions in most aspects of her life and this would also include relationships.

I disagree with the restrictions placed upon her but it would be wrong to say it was only financial.

That’s a generic definition. Not necessarily related or accurate to her. Court orders can stray from the absolute definition. Unless you have the order, I don’t think you can accurately assume this is the case.

There is sadly. If you scroll back you’ll see some repeated posts, unusual videos, odd pictures etc.

Dementia is a funny thing, performing might be something she enjoys and can still do, would you deny her that.

I did wonder that and consider maybe that was why she still performed. I heard a fairly recently that she would never perform again (via her son, perhaps?) and she hasn’t performed in years now so maybe she doesn’t want to any longer and that wish is being listened to.

Certainly and sadly you suffer bipolar and dementia. Considering the conservatorship is agreed by all to be for life and those really aren’t typically granted for someone in their 20s or 30s, it’s very unlikely to be one doctor’s option who was bought by Jamie Spears so that he would gain control.

Whatever is wrong with Britney, I wish her well and I hope she is happy with her life as it is (and many who lack capacity are happy).

For those comments about Britney not being able to have a partner or sex, at one stage her fiancé was also her co-conservator and able to make decisions over her personal well-being (but it financial ones). Would she really have been allowed by her father to marry if she was not allowed to be in a relationship?

It almost doesn’t look like her... I mean I know she’s been unwell but if you compare her on this Instagram account to recent press photos she looks different. Like a look-a-like! Or am I imagining it?

It just seems a bit wrong to me. Surely that would never happen here? If she's not a danger to others I don't understand why she's being treated this way? Surely the the way she is behaving could just be a reflection of the fact she's been under house arrest for the last how ever many years.

I just think it's all very strange. The situation rather than her Instagram posts.

I saw a video recently of an elderly woman living in a care home in a wheelchair. In her earlier life she was a ballet dancer. They played the music to swan lake and the lady danced to it move by move perfectly, obviously she was still sitting in her wheelchair but her upper body an arm movements were exactly the same. This woman had dementia and can't remember hardly anything but the music stirred something in her and in her mind she was back on that stage dancing. It was beautiful to watch.

Apparently she has said she won't perform again as long as her father is in charge. It was in an article recently, after she had tried to have Jamie removed. Her mother Lynn said Britney's relationship with her father is 'toxic', and they have 'no working relationship' and don't even speak to each other. So she may be choosing not to perform as a form of protest.

If that's true @yourhairiswinterfire then she doesn't really sound like she has the mental capacity of someone in a coma!

Poor woman. I just don't think this would happen if she lived in the UK.

To the people who keep saying "if she's so ill why is she still touring, recording etc?" She isn't, for at least 2 years.
I don't think it's at all unreasonable that she's not allowed to drive. We don't know what her mental illness is, or what drugs she's taking. People with Bipolar disorder can have their licence revoked on medical grounds in the uk.

I'm with the view that her father is abusing her. And the legal system has been complicit in that. It is a recurring theme and an injustice that if someone has "mental health problems", then whatever their current mental state they are ignored and their rights trampled over.

I can't believe someone in their 30s has dementia! I'm not disputing it but genuinely didn't think that was possible at such a young age. And what on earth could have caused it...?

It’s such an exploitative set-up. Far too close to a firm of slavery or bonded labour for comfort.

I looked at the linked photo and thought she'd aged quite a lot since I'd last seen her in a music video, but then I realised that her biggest hits were about 25 years ago, so of course she's going to look much older. I think she was about 16 when Hit Me Baby One More Time came out, so she must be in her 40s now and there is a bit of sun damage to her skin, which is understandable. I didn't watch any of the vids but if she's on a cocktail of drugs I don't want to view her going down the same route as Amy Winehouse - car crash in slow motion springs to mind. It's a real shame what too much, too soon (of fame, money, drugs... anything) can do to people.
