I don't want my kids to be vegetarian

DC (15 & 13) have decided they want to go vegetarian. I don't want to go vegetarian and neither does DH, so they'd have to have different meals. I/DH don't want to be wasting time making 2 different meals whenever we want meat or fish, and we don't really have space for 2 people to be cooking at once. WIBU to say no?

I am allowed to reply to people who go on about rotting flesh and eating cadavers of dead animals... Why not calling them goady?
You know these posters are trying to get a reaction, they just don't like it when they don't get it.

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 05/12/2020 21:36

same reason you Claimed not one vegetarian had put meat eaters down

This makes no sense. My claim came after you accused vegetarians of thinking they were superior. So are you going to berate the rude goady meat eater who has been making digs at veggies about respecting other peoples choices?

All the talk of its morally better what does that imply about meat eaters then?

Does it matter? If you're happy with what you eat and how you live why do you care about what it implies?

I have never mentioned rotting flesh or put other people down for their choices.

You on the other hand decided I must feel superior and decided to have a dig based on nothing more other than I don't agree with you.

Not only that but you took a dig at someone who has poor mental health. You might think it makes you look clever. Really it just makes you look like a twat.

gingerbreadfox · 05/12/2020 21:40

@derxa

Meat isn't as healthy as it used to be, pumped full of hormones and chemicals etc. Rubbish
How do you think cows keep producing milk even after their newborn calves are taken away from their mothers? Because they are pumped full of hormones. If you think it's rubbish you clearly don't know the half of it and need to do your research into the meat industry.

Literally just google 'hormones and meat' and there are documents on the approved hormones (including synthetic hormones) approved for use in animals. It's not hard information to find out.

You do realise it's possible to write a post that is not directly addressed to YOU, don't you?

timeforanewstart · 05/12/2020 21:42

@everyplanethasayorkshire i said some not all vegetarians as i said most have offered some very simple solutions to the op of how to make it easier to cater and ideas to try.
But yes it does annoy me when people judge others who eat meat because they don't and same as some are offended by meat eater poster which is also understandable
I agree in choice and if thats your choice to be a vegetarian thats fine and if you came to visit i would cater to your choices ( although my cooking meat or veggie is prob not the best ) i prob eat couple of vegetarian meals a week without thinking because i enjoy

goldenharvest · 05/12/2020 21:43

You and dh go 50/50 vegetarian, cook some of their meals, but teach them how to cook a proportion of their own meals. Their choice so they should take some responsibility for it

Meat is decomposing flesh. Calling something what it is isn’t goady. It’s a fact. Nobody has said you are a bad person because you eat meat. Bringing up how delicious you find meat in conversation with a vegetarian, especially a form of meat that is known to be extremely cruel, is very goady and mean. It’s your opinion that veal is delicious, not a fact like meat being rotting flesh. I know meat eaters that won’t even touch veal due to the cruelty issue. No one is trying to get a reaction from you, we are just defending our ethical decisions.
derxa · 05/12/2020 21:44

@Campalumpa

Embrace it. We all need to stop eating meat otherwise our kids won’t have a long term future
There are too many people on this planet. The End
timeforanewstart · 05/12/2020 21:49

@blackkitty1234 tbf there is no need for saying rotting flesh though as someone has said ( not you ) t use decomposing meat that is also used to gain a reaction as a frozen burger isn't decomposing , its meat , humans have eaten it for years many choose not to and thats fine.
I agree with veal although I eat meat i wouldn't touch this , or the pate where they force feed or whatever

gingerbreadfox · 05/12/2020 21:49

@NoPainNoTartine

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire Unlike you, I am not feeling superior, just very amused by the whole nonsense. You wouldn't eat veal if I served it to you, we get that. Your loss, it's delicious.
Wow. You must feel so proud Hmm

Are you a bit lost? Let me help you out here; you quite clearly addressed your post at 21:18:39 to me and accused me of feeling morally superior. I know you were talking to me because you used my NN.

blackkitty1234 then quoted your post and told you it was mean and goady to which you replied (quoting blackkitty1234's name) this:

I am allowed to reply to people who go on about rotting flesh and eating cadavers of dead animals...

So if you weren't referring to me then who were you referring to? And why did you accuse me of thinking I am morally superior when nothing I have said indicates that? More importantly, why did you think it was appropriate to say such a thing when at the time you had no idea of my mental state?

Yet you're still ignoring the goady rude meat eater. Strange.

timeforanewstart · 05/12/2020 21:55

@EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire i haven't ignored them I said it was wrong but they never questioned my comment you did
If you referring to the veal comment then I don't think that was fair especially as even as a meat eater I won't eat veal so to say to a vegetarian who doesn't eat meat isn't fair

Sunnydayhere · 05/12/2020 21:56

We were vegetarian before we had children so they were all fed that way.

Then in later teens two rebelled - and went vegan.

So when they visited we ate vegan. No problems.

A bit later we went that way too. Haven't looked back.

Perhaps try some of the compromises listed in other posts, after a while you may decide that eating less meat, if not going full on vegetarian is for you. (And that you are healthier, feel better)

Not going along with your children’s wishes may make life in the kitchen easier but create other problems along the way.

Did you? You made a general remark how people should respect other peoples choices after you were called up on it. However you didn't address the goady meat eater specifically...yet you continue to berate 'vegetarians' for being rude.

timeforanewstart · 05/12/2020 22:04

@EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire i haven't berated vegetarians at all I said some , i have actually said how the vast majority were helpful at least a couple of times

winterchills · 05/12/2020 22:05

Yabu. Let them cook their own meals on the days where your having meat

timeforanewstart · 05/12/2020 22:06

@EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire i made the comment about people respecting others choices before anyone called me up on it that I read
Lets just agree to disagree as pointless going back and forth

NoPainNoTartine · 05/12/2020 22:09

Knowing that haribos, many vitamins, vegetable soups, parmesan cheese, processed sugar to name a few are made with animal-products

you still insist that using the term "decomposing flesh" is anything but goady? It never works, but it always come back in these threads, as if non-vegetarians are blissfully ignorant of what they eat.

lunalulu · 05/12/2020 22:11

I'd support them, and get excited myself about vegetarian food.

That's great but can I ask what was it I said that made you think I thought I was morally superior? So I can try and avoid it in future Smile.

Might I recommend this book? Full of recipes which can be done with or without meat, some of which involve adding meat at the last moment, so you can all eat the same thing

You may also be pleasantly surprised by the fake meat that's now on the market - five years ago it was awful, but now it's really quite good. Vivera is a reliable brand to start you off.

caringcarer · 05/12/2020 22:13

My dh is veggie but rest of family are not. Give them their own shelf in fridge. I cook a cheesy pasta bake, aubergine lasagne, Shepard's pie or spag bol with Quorn mince s couple of times each week. DH has an omelette once each week and a veggie or quattro fromagio pizza another day. Sometimes I cook boiled baby potatoes and veg and pop a few chicken breast in oven for us and DH has peppered pretend steak, we call a fake. If I do s toad in the hole I just make DH a small one with veggie sausages. It really is not much extra work. Just keep in plenty of eggs and pizzas they can eat. We all eat lentil and tomato soup with a French stick.

You'd be correct - if we were in the US. However, the use of hormones in farm animals is banned in the UK, as are imports of meat from animals treated with hormones.

It's potentially an issue in a post Brexit US-UK trade deal (alongside chlorinated chicken) but thus far it's simply not an issue in the UK.
