To be Freaked Out by Sainsbury's Doing This?

Has anyone else had a mailshot from Sainsbury's with a mini advent calendar of vouchers in it?

Apparently (according to this) I was the No. 1 top buyer of passata this year

Really? In the whole of the UK? We're a family of 4, so we're not feeding the 5000 or anything...

I'm a bit freaked out that Sainsbury's think I want to know this.

And actually, I'd rather have a spreadsheet showing my ranking on all the other 750 different products I apparently bought this year! [boggles] (I did lockdown shopping for MIL and two other elderly neighbours )

YANBU- we know companies do this, but don't flaunt it in our faces!
YABU- that's what you get for succumbing to 'loyalty' cards!

Wonderful. I can't remember the last time I used a nectar card so have never had this, but would love to know I was no. 1 buyer of something. Every time I had whatever it was in my trolley I'd feel like I had a hidden super power - like everyone could see I was buying lentil soup, but only I knew I wasn't just some ordinary consumer of lentil soup but Britain's TOP consumer of lentil soup.

So does everyone get a message saying that they are the number one buyer of something? Because surely that can’t be true for everyone. Especially people who do a smaller shop.

It's an achievement to be top at anything, maybe have a certificate made up and frame it? That's what I'd be tempted to do, all the better if it was something tacky like pickled onion Monster Munch to which I am partial!!

I am the number one buyer on Chilli and coriander prawns in the country apparently. I was absolutely made up as it felt like the only achievement I have managed this year! Although I was also a bit embarrassed because they are one of my more extravagant purchases that I have told myself is a lockdown treat obviously far too many times!

We haven’t had this this year but last year my husband was number 1 buyer of cod goujons. I don’t think we’ve eaten any this year!

I haven't had one this year but last year I was the number one buyer of a product that was free on Slimming World (I think it was some sort of bread) and I posted it with a lol to our FB page and a few others on the page piped up they'd been told they were number one for that product too! (We only have one big Sainsbury so it's not even by branch!)

When you scan nectar cards they’re collecting your data. Surely this is common sense?!?

I buy A LOT for work. I've just bought 400 tubs of chocolate from Tesco and 400 packs of mince pies from Sainsbury's. I never got this mailing though!

My boyfriend once got a £100 voucher for his local Chinese as he was their top customer. They even told him he’d spent over £2k with them in a year and thanked him for his custom

I got one last year but not (so far) this year... I was top buyer of Alpro oat milk

Last year, I was the number one buyer of Walkers Max Jalapeno flavour. It said at my local Sainsbury's store though, but I was still proud of myself 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Not heard anything this year yet!

Don’t really buy any of the popular foods on this thread.

We are probably top for own brand six pack prawn cocktail crisps, Prosecco, ritz crackers and double Gloucester cheese.

I think the data is just for your local store, isn't it? Last year I was their top buyer of instant mashed potato.

My dc's loved it. I know the data is from my nectar card. To be fair I've seen the lovely staff at Sainsbury's more than my family this year.
My niece sees more of Sainburys staff than her family. She works there!!

I was amazed this got through the marketing department. Imagine getting a letter telling you you were the number one buyer of pickled onions in the Brechin area or Tena Ladies or some such. I also thought the line about making them feel warm and fuzzy was a bit off. It basically a massive corporation which has a tonne of personal data about its customers and is letting them know it. Not subtle and a bit sinister.

More important things to worry about going on in the world!
