Sorry that was rather longer than I intended!

froubylou · 05/12/2020 08:12

God is just stories made up by rich white men to control the masses, like a lot of history really. It's a tool to maintain the oppression of the little people.

For the last 2000 and odd years it's been one God to explain our origin stories, before that the Greek god, before that or even alongside those Gods other origin stories.

Whichever you pick they all tend to blame women for the shit show that is disease, poverty, suffering. Pandora, Helen of Troy, Eve. All stories that have wonen fucking everything up.

God is a misogynistic old cunt.

lemonsquashie · 05/12/2020 08:15

No it's utter nonsense and just somebody's belief: no proof. No plausible evidence

80sForever · 05/12/2020 08:16

I have seen my guardian angel who was sent to me during a time of great suffering and that is proof enough for me.

SurreyHillsGirl · 05/12/2020 08:21

@SendMeAnAngel

Why are you asking OP? Why the sudden interest in if there is a God? If you don't believe why not just drop it rather than make a thread about it?
Because its an interesting thread? Hmm
blanketbook · 05/12/2020 08:21

Op asked about belief in God. Not about religion. Not everyone that believes in God is religious. And not all the problems in the world are because of religion.

Of course science and belief can exist together. Millions of scientists and doctors and people with a good understanding of modern science have belief in a God. It's not an indication of a person's intelligence and definitely can't be compared to belief in Santa Claus.

Exactly.

God isn’t meant to fight evil, we are meant to fight it. If there is starvation and poverty it is because too many of us are greedy, selfish and corrupt

I still don't understand that element of the theory. It just doesn't account for awful things that happen that are not the fault of human beings. And I can't really accept the argument that it's all down to Satan, because God is meant to be omnipotent, therefore surely he could sort Satan out any time he chose.

Grobagsforever · 05/12/2020 08:26

If he exists he the cruellest, most selfish, psychopathic, narcissistic being imaginable.

80sForever · 05/12/2020 08:26

@SurreyHillsGirl no the OP is making a thread about God because there is something niggling on the inside telling her there is a God.

Cygne · 05/12/2020 08:27

But you can prove a negative. An ultrasound of my empty uterus will prove there's no fetus in there.

Sadly you can't ultrasound the entire universe, especially if you don't know what you are looking for.

flaviaritt · 05/12/2020 08:28

I’m not sure whether natural disasters are meant to be related to evil or not, theologically speaking. What I do know is that we are all meant to die. We have to go in one way or another.

And I can't really accept the argument that it's all down to Satan, because God is meant to be omnipotent, therefore surely he could sort Satan out any time he chose.

Theologically, that’s a grey area, isn’t it? Does God choose to permit the workings of evil? Is it a consequence of having given us free will? If God removed free will and evil from the world in a huge display of His power, would any of us even need redemption and would we die at all? And if not, would we ever get to Heaven?

These are matters religious people have debated for centuries. I can’t solve them.

For anyone interested in atheism and morality (and religion) this is a great book books.google.co.uk/books/about/The_Bonobo_and_the_Atheist_In_Search_of.html?id=e_DDGa-dk60C&source=kp_book_description&redir_esc=y

ineedsun · 05/12/2020 08:31

Figment of the imagination used for years by men to control people and excuse abuse.

It's not god I have a problem with it's the institution of the church.

Cygne · 05/12/2020 08:31

I’m not sure whether natural disasters are meant to be related to evil or not, theologically speaking. What I do know is that we are all meant to die. We have to go in one way or another.

But we are not all meant to live in agony from the moment of birth, which is what happens for some people, and again is not normally down to corruption or evil on the part of human beings.

CrazyToast · 05/12/2020 08:32

I don't link God and religion, it's more a spiritual sense of something bigger, the energy of the world or universe.

80sForever · 05/12/2020 08:34

People who say God is a narcicisst, selfish, psycopath have issues....i feel sorry for you...

flaviaritt · 05/12/2020 08:36

But we are not all meant to live in agony from the moment of birth, which is what happens for some people, and again is not normally down to corruption or evil on the part of human beings.

In theological terms, before evil came into the world, nobody died. The world was a paradise and the first people were meant to live forever. So suffering is all down to the presence of evil. If there had never been evil or sin, nobody would ever have died in agony.

I am not saying I believe that, but that is the position.

OohKittens · 05/12/2020 08:36

No not at all but I believe that when we die we meet our loved ones again.

Caesargeezer · 05/12/2020 08:37

I’ve always found atheists to be far more critical of believers than the other way around. I believe but I don’t judge those who don’t.

Lampzade · 05/12/2020 08:38

I have had pain and suffering in my life. However, I believe wholeheartedly in a higher being,
Yes I believe in God

Nuie · 05/12/2020 08:40

I believe in God. I have a God shaped hole in me that only my faith in Christ fills and no arguments on mumsnet or otherwise have ever diminished.
Sometimes I wonder what would happen if it did just disappear, through rational argument or otherwise, and I have gone through many cycles where I have actively battled with my God-shaped hole but it stubbornly persists.
I’m half way through an MSc right now so having a questioning scientific mind hasn’t changed anything, for me at least.
It’s not going anywhere and as such my faith remains and I’m thankful for that, more than ever right now.

EasternDailyStress · 05/12/2020 08:40

No such thing. Made-up nonsense to keep people in their place.

Againstmachine · 05/12/2020 08:42

God is just stories made up by rich white men to control the masses, like a lot of history really. It's a tool to maintain the oppression of the little people.

The men part is correct however, the white part is laughable, it's created by people of all creeds and colours.
