Do you beleive there is a God? I would like to, but how can he exist alongside modern science?

Aibu to believe in something more?

OP posts:
Throckmorton · 05/12/2020 00:09

Poor people exist to teach other people to be generous?! Wow, the poor people really got the shit end of that stick.

PickAChew · 05/12/2020 00:11

Nice story. Very unlikely.

Bikingbear · 05/12/2020 00:26

I believe in Creator God.

Scientists can't go back any further than the big bang theory.

I've yet to see how science can explain male, female and reproduction other than happening by mere chance.

Science has actually explained the Star of Bethlehem although it was a couple of years out.

However religion made by man, seems to cause more fights, battles and arguments than anything else. But those who cause such things aren't really following their religion either 'love thy neighbour'.
That doesn't mean gasing or bombing them because they have different thoughts to yourself.

Big bang theory was more than 4.5 thousand years ago, though.
sunshineinmyheart · 05/12/2020 00:28

No God but it'd been great to believe in one but sorry there is no God I have not found a reason to believe.

If there is, he/she wouldn't let lot of bad things happen?

Religion has a purpose as in "hope" that something/someone out there is looking out for you. Its a nice feeling and many needs it.. Being an Atheist can be bleak Grin but thats what it is.

You can still NOT believe in god BUT enjoy celebrating god coz thats what you base your childhood memories on. Like part of your culture if you like.

"The God Delusion" is a good book. BBC science &nature have couple of amazing documentaries that explores evolution if you are interested. Ricky has a blunt way of putting it.

Well done OP for questioning things.

What do you mean @PickAChew?

miserableannie · 05/12/2020 00:30

No and I have strong opinions on people who do if I'm honest

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 05/12/2020 00:32

Opinion in god? A social construct to moderate behaviour and impose morality
No such thing as god.ever.now.then.

Justajot · 05/12/2020 00:34

I don't believe in any god.

I find it a bit odd that people are able to pick a religion out of the many available and go with that one, without recognising that their choice is effectively arbitrary. There are so many to choose from, both current and historical.

I also find it a bit odd when people pick a religion, but then pick and choose which of its rules to follow - fundamentalists actually make more sense to me than vaguely religious people. Obviously that's even harder where a religion has contradictions within it.

I recognise that religion brings comfort. For example it's nice to imagine loved ones in an afterlife, even though I don't believe in one. Similarly, when life is throwing shit at me, I get a strong desire to bargain with an external controlling force to get the shit to stop.

FluffyPurple · 05/12/2020 00:58

Yes, I believe in God. The interlocking laws of physics and the conditions of an earth we can all survive on to me show there's a creator behind it all. So Science and God work together, not in conflict.

I'm a Christian and believe all the disease, death etc in the world are here because of the curse of sin. God created a perfect world but sin entered into it because we have the ability to obey or not, everyone has sinned; we've all lied etc. But because God loves us he sent Jesus to pay the penalty of sin, which is death and separation from God. If we accept this free gift (Grace) through faith/trust we can have a relationship with him now and forever.

The Alpha course is a great suggestion for answering further questions people may have in regards to the Christian faith, lots of stuff available online too.

Sheogorath · 05/12/2020 01:07

@ruby4ever

Of course there's a god. There has to be. Bollocks that the universe came about from Big Bang and humans from evolution. What a load of crap. So why haven't we humans evolved any further??? There has to be a creator to the creation. Do you think humans just come out with amazing interventions, god gives them the knowledge. Everything happens for a reason. Why is there poor people? If there wasn't how would we learn to be good in giving charity, to be grateful. How does our good deeds increase? Life is a test. I believe all those poor people, innocent people being killed, etc they aren't suffering for nothing, they will get paradise of eternal bliss. Those of us in better positions are given the choice of doing good for others, for ourselves.
So poor people are poor to teach rich people charity? That's quite disgusting.

And humans are evolving. Some of us anyway.

StillMedusa · 05/12/2020 01:25

No.
I was born and raised in a genuinely Christian household. Believed, was baptised as a young adult.
Started questioning (the problem of evil) amongst other stuff. Had a disabled child who was prayed over.
The one day, aged 30, I woke up one day and realised I didn't believe any of it.
Then went on to work with children who have disabilities. I worked with a lad who has Lesch Nyhans syndrome... a genetic whoopsie that compels the person to mutilate themselves and attack others even though they don't want to.. he spent his short life literally splinted and chained in his wheelchair to prevent him biting off his own fingers.. he had bitten his own lips off...and saying sorry sorry as he did so. Died as a teen with the kidney failure that accompanies the syndrome.

I've seen so many innocent children in pain, dying, suffering. If there is a god he is not benevolent if he grants some people their prayers and lets others suffer horribly. He's either absent, unwilling or a total wanker.

And religion is simply a way to keep everyone (and especially women) in their place. It's perfectly possible to have a good moral code without god. (The Humanists are a good alternative...)

MH1111 · 05/12/2020 01:26

There is no god, it’s a belief system from the infancy of mankind.
There is religion though, which is the worst type of controlling mind fuck possible

FuckYouCorona · 05/12/2020 01:32

Of course not. If there is he's a fucking nasty bastard!

Ylvamoon · 05/12/2020 01:33

There is no God - it's an abstract human concept of power and control over the masses. Sheep need to follow and all that! We only feel safe in a group and like to follow...

I can't imagine how any divine being stands for the amount of oppression and bloodshed that religion has caused in the past, present and future. The only "intervention" being a better life after death - but only if you have been good!!

Science and Philosophy are your friend if you are looking for answers.

What does any of that mean? I've had Christians tell me the "God sent Jesus" stuff. To do what? How? How does being crucified "save" anyone from anything?

SwedishEdith · 05/12/2020 01:36

Everything happens for a reason.

Why?

FluffyPurple · 05/12/2020 01:46

We are sinners, sin literally means to 'miss the mark' of God's holy standard. God's moral law has been broken by us all (except babies etc), we've all lied etc. Jesus lived a sinless life so when he died on the cross he absorbed all the sin like a sponge and settled the debt. If we were guilty of speeding it would be like Jesus paid the fine for us so we can walk free from court on judgement day, although we are guilty, there's no punishment.

But you would have to believe in God for that to begin to make any sense.
justilou1 · 05/12/2020 01:53

If god exists as a conscious being as described a-la Bible, pretty much all religious texts et.al. Then by modern standards, he would be medically diagnosed as a psychopath.
This is with or without the actual magical powers.
I do like this one though...

If there are 'gods' they are scientists

What do you mean @shamalidacdak?Xmas Confused

Damnloginpopup · 05/12/2020 02:11

Nah. Absolute nonsense.

And typically arrogant to think we are so special...humankind is as irrelevant as a fart in a thunderstorm to anything but humankind.

imissthebubonicplague · 05/12/2020 02:17

For those keen to advertise the `alpha' course - is this not just some modern form of brainwashing ? Bringing vulnerable adults together to use group mentality to coherse them, it all sounds a bit too cult like ?

It fascinates me the lengths some church's go to to keep youth and teens interested, surely if they are so strong in faith and have a powerful god they wouldn't need to try so hard ?

Willow79 · 05/12/2020 02:20

Agree with @Suckmyfatone. Also dont really believe a real God would be male or gendered really. Just another form of patriarchal BS.

I don't believe in God.
