**@CathyorClaire* Eternal life with all its worshipping forever sounds exhausting* I'm forever surprised at these thought patterns. To think that people would actively chose not to worship God who by the way gave you the gift of life is beyond beggar's belief
The "gift of life", as you call it, was given to me by my mum and dad having a shag. And I hope they had a jolly fun time conceiving me.

squeekums · 07/12/2020 23:04

@squeekums every word you just said. This is what I find the most irritating thing about certain groups of believers - that they constantly trot out this bullshit that we unbelievers must be miserable, empty and lonely, we just don't know it. Unbelievably patronising and arrogant.
Thats what irritates me most, the arrogance and patronizing, like they know our lives, ourselves and our wants and needs better than we do for ourselves.

Just to add further the coronavirus began because a certain group of people disobeyed those said spiritual laws and now we are all suffering

Oh so we can just pray away the rona now?
the stupidity is scary, the fact people believe this is insane

This is because deep down, in those quiet moments, when there is nothing left to hold on to, you recognise the truth

Ive almost died in a car crash
Put myself on that edge of death with drugs
slept on the streets
Not once did god ever seem like truth in them moments, didnt come to me, didnt reveal some truth, provide safety or comfort
Nothing

Which people disobeyed what spiritual laws? I suppose wet markets in Wuhan were a Bad Idea, but I don't know of any spiritual law against wet markets!

Cygne · 08/12/2020 17:30

Eternal life with all its worshipping forever requirements sounds exhausting.

And incredibly dull. I thought heaven was supposed to be blissful?

Which group of people, precisely which spiritual laws, how were they broken, why should we all suffer just so that they can be punished?
Parker231 · 08/12/2020 17:43

This god does seem rubbish - does lots of cruel things but nothing nice. Think I’ll stick with reality rather than imaginary characters.

God is in the same category as the tooth fairy and Father Christmas but at least they are kind and children look up to them.

Xnon · 08/12/2020 18:43

The stats are interesting.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_religious_populations

Apparently 84% of the world’s population have faith in something more. www.theguardian.com/news/2018/aug/27/religion-why-is-faith-growing-and-what-happens-next

“ Professor Eric Priest, a mathematician and a former president of the Royal Astronomical Society, said the supposed conflict between science and spirituality was outdated, and many scientists had “a more subtle, nuanced view of the relationship, and recognise that questioning, imagination, creativity, reason, faith and community are common features of both science and religion”.”

Not necessarily.

We can't be "for sure" about that ever.

If there isn't a God. Which lets be honest. There probably isn't.

Then the proof of non-existence can't ever happen.

So we're up for more thousands of years of speculation/worship/comments such as yours.

No ones ever seen God. Or has any proof of speaking to God.

Why would the one Christian/Catholic God god be the actual one.

When there are so many other religions worshiping other gods.

Pretty sure Zeus and Vishnu etc aren't real. And I'm sure Christians would think that too. But can't apply the same logic to their own beliefs.

LastChristmas20 · 08/12/2020 21:11

@juliastone

My philosophy teacher (probably atheistic or perhaps agnostic himself) used to say: "Even people who don't believe in God start praying in a few split seconds before the car hits them". He maintained that everyone believes when in one of the "limit situations".
He definitely wasn't an atheist.

So you can stop all that nonsense.

I don't agree.

I thought the idea of god was insane.

Then I nearly died of cancer.

Nothing changed, this god character can still kiss my fat hairy arse and do one.

I hate god, religion, astrology, superstition and any of that basic childish bollocks.

Read a couple of books by Richard Dawkins and understand what a fact is.

BigFatLiar · 08/12/2020 22:40

We can't be "for sure" about that ever.

We all die so we all find out, you won't be able to tell anyone though.

If you believe and there is no god, you just die and nothing. Same for non-believers.

If there is a god and you die who knows what comes next. For the believers hopefully their expectations are met. Unbelievers? Perhaps they'll get their expectations ie non existence.

We won't 'find out' though, our consciousness will be gone.

I think that's probably the idea many people don't want to engage with - that the universe will go on without our consciousness, just as it managed for billions of years before humans in general evolved or our own consciousness emerged.

insiwinsi · 08/12/2020 23:37

I don't love religion but I love parts of many religions, I hate dogma, and religion making people feel guilty. It's hard to escape those feelings if they've been imposed upon you as a child, so I definitely won't bring kids up with any religion. I am however interested in personal spirituality, not really sure what that means but staying humble, grateful to "the universe" and being aware that our actions should try to be morally good. I believe when I follow these principles life is easier. If I stray then things get more difficult.

“ Pretty sure Zeus and Vishnu etc aren't real. And I'm sure Christians would think that too. But can't apply the same logic to their own beliefs.”

Confused

Pretty sure Hindus still believe in Vishnu. “Vishnu is the second god in the Hindu triumvirate (orTrimurti). The triumvirate consists of three gods who are responsible for the creation, upkeep and destruction of the world.” Who is Vishnu?

Hinduism is still a major religion and it’s followers includes the Chancellor (Rishi Sunak). “Sunak told the BBC: “Faith is important to me. I’m a practising Hindu.” amp.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2020/nov/13/rishi-sunak-hindus-lockdown-rules-diwali

This is because deep down, in those quiet moments, when there is nothing left to hold on to, you recognise the truth.

This is the tired old 'there are no atheists in foxholes' trope. It pretends that people are only atheists while life is good. Given the past 4 years of mine, I cry bollocks to that. I've had 4 major bereavements, a marriage breakdown, trauma to myself and the kids, major illness in the family - and I'm still as atheist as ever.

I've also had a few hairy moments in terms of imminent death - white water kayaking can go wrong - and I'm still atheist as ever.

LastChristmas20 · 09/12/2020 08:09

@Xnon precisely

But you don't see the members here who are adamant God is real also saying Vishnu is.

The "God is real and anyone who doesn't think so is going to burn" lot can't apply their logic to the millions of others with different faiths.

This argument only ever centres around "god" from the bible.

I'm much happier accepting there is no god but if it helps others then as long as it's making them better people go for it. But it's when the rest of us get threatened for not believing that it gets my goat.

There’s a difference between faith and religion imo.

Organised religion is also like a business, so it’s in their vested interests to make their religion like an exclusive club. True faith, on the other hand, can sometimes be found out in nature by anyone and everyone.

I also don’t think you can force anyone to believe either. You either do or you don’t. And you’re allowed to change how you feel and believe grime one minute to the next. Faith is not static imo.

Xnon · 09/12/2020 08:25

*from one minute to the next.

LastChristmas20 · 09/12/2020 08:29

Yes I think that's it precisely.

I totally understand people wanting and needing faith in something. And would never try to change somebody else's.

My best friend is deeply religious and it has helped her through some very hard times. I also have been through terrible times but didn't feel then need or desire to look for comfort/answer from anything other than family/friends and science.

We all do what's gets us through. Smile

The business side of religion is the damaging side. You're right there. X
