SchrodingersImmigrant · 04/12/2020 22:04

he sounds an evil disgusting individual

That's humans. Free will and all that

yearinyearout · 04/12/2020 22:04

Doesn't exist. I can't fathom how anyone with intelligence can believe in God in all honesty.

Iwonder777 · 04/12/2020 22:05

I've always had an awareness of god; even growing up in a godless home. I felt he was really.

I find unbelievers fascinating. It's never been my experience.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 04/12/2020 22:06

Even as a non believer I find insinuating that believers are stupid super cunty thing to do.

chomalungma · 04/12/2020 22:06

Old Testament God

I'll smite anyone who doesn't believe in me.
I'll destroy cities.
Old Testament God killed lots of people.

New Testament God

Here's my son.
Look. I've changed. Believe in me.

Hmm
EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 04/12/2020 22:06

I believe in God definitely but maybe not God as we think we know him.

Iwonder777 · 04/12/2020 22:06

I've got shit loads of qualifications.

And I believe.

It's not a mind thing.

It's a spirit and heart thing.

Can't explain it possibly.

speakout · 04/12/2020 22:07

That's humans. Free will and all that

THat's the god of the bible.

LST · 04/12/2020 22:07

I'm 'Catholic' went to a Catholic primary and high school but do not believe in God anymore. I am a full blown atheist I'd say. The idea is nice.

Tootsietoot · 04/12/2020 22:07

God has been made up to fulfill a need in people who can't think for themselves. It is an easy way to make sense of our lack of obvious purpose. Religion is a brilliant way to control lots of people to do what you want.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 04/12/2020 22:08

THat's the god of the bible.

My bad. I thought that poster meant he sounds like that because he doesn't intervene in bad events

chomalungma · 04/12/2020 22:09

Which God do people believe in?

Because Gods come and go over the years.

missyB1 · 04/12/2020 22:09

@yearinyearout

Doesn't exist. I can't fathom how anyone with intelligence can believe in God in all honesty.
I can’t fathom how anyone with any intelligence would make this sort of statement in all honesty.

I might agree with you if it wasn't for all the super cunty things so many believers have done in the name of their god over the centuries.
amicissimma · 04/12/2020 22:11

@brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

There is no god. If you think there is, prove it.
If you could prove it, it wouldn't be faith.

Knowledge and faith are different things and offer different benefits to different people.

Iwonder777 · 04/12/2020 22:13

With re to gods, I believe in Jesus.

I truly have had many experiences of him.

I'm a regular Joe,honest 😁

flowerycurtain · 04/12/2020 22:13

If you're wanting to think about it I highly recommend actually reading the Bible.

I was brought up going to a monthly cold and draughty family service in a country parish not dissimilar to the Vicar of Dibley.

Completely lost faith in my early twenties but after doing the Alpha course I would say I got to know Jesus and it transformed my life.

Found myself struggling a bit so faith again last year so made a decision to do the Bible in a year app. It's been fascinating- the history, the stories that permeate our culture and the beauty of some of the psalms is breathtaking.

if you're not sure but interested why not commit to researching it. Read the Bible, Read up on some of the evidence for Jesus, try an Alpha course. See what you think of it.

peanutbutter00 · 04/12/2020 22:14

I don't believe in god, there are too many bad things in this world, why would an all powerful being create such things? The good things that happen come from good people, chance and luck

I think religion was used to get the general public to comply with laws and morals in a time when science and knowledge was much less developed. Something to fear (hell) and something to look forward to (heaven) to keep people in line.

Religion is a comfort to some people and that can be a lovely thing. Though I think people use the idea of an afterlife to help comfort them because the idea that this is the only life we get might be overwhelming for some people.

stayathomer · 04/12/2020 22:15

God and religion aren't necessarily something everyone puts together though, I definitely cherry pick- I hate what the catholic church have done in Ireland, I see us rivalled only by germany and the holocaust in our history, but I know good priests (2 distant relatives and I went to college where they trained priests too) and the sense of community in church is lovely.

Alpha impacted me too

I have read the Bible. It’s provides fascinating pieces of ancient writings incorporating history and politics as well as myths that are even older, some perhaps leading back to originals from the Bronze Age. Reading it does not automatically cause “faith”. Quite the opposite when you read some of the stories in there.

user1274245 · 04/12/2020 22:18

Why would an immortal being have even a mild interest in the minutiae of the individual lives of billions of humans? (And why only humans? Why not also elephants? Or dogs? Or trees? Or caterpillars?)

Does anybody have more than a vague passing interest in the individual lives and experiences of every single bee that has ever lived in a given hive or every single ant that has ever lived in a given colony? Throughout the entire course of each of their lives?

Sideorderofchips · 04/12/2020 22:19

He's a dick.

alpaca44 · 04/12/2020 22:19

I believe.

I recommend reading The Language of God by Francis Collins (one of the world’s leading scientists). Science and faith are not incompatible. You can believe in both evolution and God.

BigFatLiar · 04/12/2020 22:20

I find the concept that the universe simply came into existence from nowhere just as odd as the idea of God. If there is no God then there is no good or evil simply what is socially acceptable and what is not.
