@80sForever

Just completely missed the anology there didn't you. Just because you state thinks are facts doesn't make them to be facts.

flaviaritt · 05/12/2020 09:05

The people judging God on this thread do so from a position of disbelief, clearly. And that’s fine. But for those who believe or don’t know, it makes sense (from my perspective) to admit that we don’t know and cannot understand why God might have turned Lot’s wife to salt, or why He designed a system of evolution, or meat-eating. We just have no idea. How could we understand it? How can any of us be so presumptuous as to assume understanding of an eternal, omnipotent being? We don’t understand ourselves, let alone God.

80sForever · 05/12/2020 09:05

That's not a red flag. Lot's wife had no business looking back. It showed the desire of her heart to be with the ungodly rather than to be with God. Her physical death was a manifestation of her spiritual death....quite understandable

flaviaritt · 05/12/2020 09:06

ThornAmongstRoses

Forgive me, but I find that very strange. Her reaction is entirely understandable and natural. I’m sure the brilliant people who operated on her tiny baby understand it.

So it's ok that he turned her to salt because she disobeyed him?

If he posted that on AIBU, what would the comments be?

chomalungma · 05/12/2020 09:10

If God is real, who made God?

Does God believe a God created God?

AlternativePerspective · 05/12/2020 09:10

If “god the father” were a human parent most people on here would agree that their childhoods had been abusive and that as adults they should go NC. And yet because this God is “heavenly” they should instead accept and embrace his word and worship him? Why?

Added to which, if God was all powerful there would be no Satan. Satan and a 3rd of the angels turned their backs on God and fell into evil. Why would. God allow that to happen?

That’s the bigger, deeper stuff, but even if you don’t think like that how can anyone possibly believe in half of what was written in the bible? Noah’s ark? Come on. The Virgin Mary? Yeah, likely she and Joseph were messing around and just didn’t get to the penetrative bit. It happens.

And beyond that there is the personal stuff. Someone prays to God and they are cured. Someone else does the same and they aren’t. If you believe in God then you believe that there is a time to be born and a time to die. And no amount of prayer changes that. So God didn’t spare you, it just wasn’t time yet...

flaviaritt · 05/12/2020 09:10

So it's ok that he turned her to salt because she disobeyed him?

If God is God, it’s irrelevant what we think is ‘okay’. We’re not His therapist or the police. He’s God. He decides the moments and manners of all our deaths and can do exactly as He likes with us.

If not - and it’s a reasonable position - it’s just a story.

FenellaMaxwell · 05/12/2020 09:11

In a lot of ways I wish I did - it would be nice to have that level of comfort and reassurance, and I I often hope I’m wrong in not believing, but fundamentally I go back to Tim Minchin on this - every miracle or mystery in the entire of human history that has ever been solved has turned out to be not god or magic.

flaviaritt · 05/12/2020 09:11

And yet because this God is “heavenly” they should instead accept and embrace his word and worship him? Why?

Because if this theology is accurate, the alternative is eternity in the fiery pit of Hell being repeatedly masticated and digested in the belly of the Beast.

chomalungma · 05/12/2020 09:12

Clearly you weren't paying attention in class.

It's just been explained that she had no business looking back at the city full of gay people who he had just murdered so she had to die.

blanketbook · 05/12/2020 09:13

@ThornAmongstRoses In thanking God she is thanking the medical staff. I think this is a misunderstanding. Like, thank God for bringing these incredible minds together to save our baby - she doesn't need to say that. By thanking God does not mean that she is dismissing the great work done by these people. If anything it's a compliment. But I can understand why you may have thought otherwise.

CapGunAmmo · 05/12/2020 09:14

Are you coming back to the thread OP or have you had a Damascene Moment and are mid prayer?

80sForever · 05/12/2020 09:14

God has always existed, before time began he was here, this is why he is God, he controls the entire universe. You can only be here writing on mumsnet because he allows you to.....i get scared at the lack of fear of God on this thread

A massive red flag and a control freak.

Definitely needs a therapist.

Also - very different to the New Testament God.

I’m a believer, though I respect others’ points of view and don’t try to shove it down their throats.

I also accept that my arguments might not be perfect, but then nor are those of non-believers.

My views are these:

  1. The world and everything in it seem too amazing to have just happened by accident.
  1. Most of the worlds problems are actually caused by human greed and selfishness (eg the planet grows more than enough to feed everyone but greedy humans have messed up the sharing).
  1. Jesus teachings if followed without all the stuff that’s been added would have made for a fair and peaceful world.

Again the statement about the gay people are taken out of context, it is about people who chose to satisfy the lust of the flesh whether gay or not..sexual sin is sexual sin

But we don’t understand why this morality and obedience that God insists upon is important. We can’t. If it’s true.

So they deserved to die?

toodleloooo · 05/12/2020 09:19

Like you, OP, I would like to believe but I just don't think I can. If no-one had mentioned the idea of a God I don't think it would have occurred to me. There are just no obvious signs in daily life. Yes, there's the "the world is amazing - where did it come from?" but in the absence of any other signs of a God it just wouldn't make sense for me to assume one entity was behind that.

chomalungma · 05/12/2020 09:19

But we don’t understand why this morality and obedience that God insists upon is important. We can’t. If it’s true

So which God do you believe in?

And are people who believe in different Gods wrong?
