What's wrong with coasters? I've never heard of any coaster snobbery before. Do people just get tea stains all over their furniture instead?

Whererainfalls · 04/12/2020 21:23

A sense of shame when someone in the household puts the milk carton on the table for visitors instead of using a jug.

Dammit.

My DC once asked me why the grandparents buy such stainy tables that they have to use coasters, when we buy tables that you can actually put things on. I explained that we buy Ikea, they buy antique Grin
SarahAndQuack · 04/12/2020 21:23

Nothing.

I could bite my parents' hands off fast enough to get all the retro/antique furniture from their parents. I owned a decent supply of coasters long before them.

I think my parents slipped through the unholy gap between the 1970s and 80s, and so the things they aspire to are things like a dining table in orange wood veneer ('but it seats 20 people!') or hideous g-plan sofas re-upholstered in shades of brown.

I wondered that. They stop table tops getting marked. We’ve got some chic ones made of etched mirror.

We buy antiques because we can't afford IKEA! There's 'antiques' and 'antiques,' I think. Ours were the kind people have been putting cups on without coasters since about 1897.

Garden furniture. A blender. White bedding. Cushions on the bed. A good wool coat. A handbag. A love of John Lewis. A million candles. A blanket tasteful enough for the lounge. An iPad. No Alexa yet but probably only a matter of time. Turns out I am my mother after all.

Ellieboolou33 · 04/12/2020 21:27

a Skoda, I remember the extreme embarrassment of dad picking me up from secondary school in his white Skoda and now I'm driving one!

JellyStrudel · 04/12/2020 21:29

A Volvo

ToastandJamandTea · 04/12/2020 21:31

A carpet sweeper. Quick run around after the kids snacks so I don't have to pull the Hoover out.

elp30 · 04/12/2020 21:32

@CommanderBurnham

Corning ware plates and sets. If you come from a south East Asian background, you'll know what I mean.
I come from a Mexican American household and I totally get what you mean about Corningware! All my relatives have it and I'm thinking of buying some 🤦🏻‍♀️
Time40 · 04/12/2020 21:35

Gardening tools, and I've gradually realised that gardening (which I always thought was a tedious and utterly pointless activity) is actually ... sort of quite nice. I'm a bit worried about myself, to be honest. So far all I've done is weeding, clipping, hacking and clearing, but I'll know I'm lost forever if and when I actually try to grow something.

I am never, ever going to buy Hotter shoes

Me neither. Hotter shoes are a line in the sand that must not be crossed.

I do have two radios permanently tuned to Radio Four, but I don't think that counts, as I've been a Radio Four fan since I was a child.

Therunecaster · 04/12/2020 21:36

@Thecobwebsarewinning

I now own my mums discarded hostess trolley. I regularly cook for 10+ people and can’t remember how I managed before I had this.
Love mine. Couldn't manage without it.
ThatWasThat · 04/12/2020 21:39

This is like a shopping list. I'm getting ideas for Christmas

RosesAndHellebores · 04/12/2020 21:43

Venetian glass roosters! I thought it was a really naff ornament. I now have the one my grandparents had, my step grandmother's, auntie Joan's and my mother has given me hers! Never did I ever think I'd own such things.

A leaf blower and vacuumer.
A kneeler for weeding

CharlieBoo · 04/12/2020 21:45

Big pants

AliceMck · 04/12/2020 21:46

Well given my mother refuses to age and thinks she’s still a teenager it’s more my grandparents things I have. Magnifying glass to read the small print on things, back scratcher, shoe horn, coasters and last but most importantly massive granny knickers😂

BonnieDundee · 04/12/2020 21:48

Flat shoes. When did that happen? I was always adamant they were so "old lady' and could not understand why anyone would wear them in a million years Xmas Blush

AliceMck · 04/12/2020 21:49

@Ettie

A dark coat specifically for going to funerals!
O yes, I have this too, pretty much an entire funeral outfit, I wear the same thing to every funeral now.

That's 'Pyrex' here. I love Pyrex casserole dishes and have some really pretty Arcopal plates I use for every day.

Yes, and an Ercol display unit thingy with a drop down drinks cabinet!
My Nan had this. Had the whole dining suite
joan12 · 04/12/2020 21:55

A house in my home town.

Aged 18 I left, thought I would never be back!

Imaginetoday · 04/12/2020 21:58

@bugaboo218

A proper waterproof sensible coat

Flat hideous, but comfortable shoes

A cake stand and cake server

A cheese board and set of cheese knives

Butter dish and gravy boat

Proper pyjamas instead of short nightshirts and shortie pj sets.

Bone China mugs

😂😂🤣 I read that list and then “and a cuddly toy” popped into my head with that theme tune..now you given me an ear worm just as I am going to bed🤣🤣
CigarsofthePharoahs · 04/12/2020 21:58

A large collection of garments with elastic waistbands.
Children. They're part of the reason for the above.

wanderings · 04/12/2020 21:58

Here's the worst combination of coasters: glass coasters, on a glass table. What would frequently happen is that I'd be offered a drink, and when I picked up the glass to drink from it, the coaster would come too... only to fall back on the table with a loud CRASH.

@Sidge I too have inherited a Moulinex electric carver!
