Thermal Vests ,and horror of horrors a pair of Thermal Leggings as well(clearly NOT Long Johns you understand!)Also wear Slippers indoors and a Thermos Flask (runs for cover ,hiding head in shame, as to what younger self would say!)TL only for very severe weather though and gratefully put on!

Shelling is fine with a bottle of chocolate stout near by 🤫

Sweetpea1532 · 13/12/2020 17:22

@Ddot
Aha! I see ...Was that something you learned from your mum and said you'd never do?.. shell beans, etc ? and here you are enjoying it with a bottle of chocolate stout.
What on earth is chocolate stout, anyway, Ddot? I'm picturing a chocolate flavoured beerlike beverage? If my mum hadn't taught me to not say mean things about food or drink that people are enjoying, I might just have said YUCK, if it is Grin

Ddot · 13/12/2020 17:28

Your right that's exactly what it is. Stout with a hint of chocolate

Ddot · 13/12/2020 17:31

My dad had an allotment, so my ma did have to prepare everything. I've got half a plot and love it. Stout is just my thing I love a beer. My mam is more a sherry girl.

My friend loved her hot water bottles in her 20s and I never did get the appeal not even now I'm older!
However, I can't not wear slippers, I love a vest and waterproof boots and coats and a wooly scarf! Comfy shoes are fab and I have a selection of dressing gowns which are lovingly washed and last for years. I
also Love a ' nice cup of tea' and have to suss out where the loos are before going in anywhere!
Getting older is an eye opener and it's easy to ' turn into your parents'

My mother died aged 45 when I was 10 so I don't really have much memory of her. What I do remember is that she liked modern conveniences because she grew up from a poor immigrant family (she was born in 1935) and she was expected to become a housewife. She was the first of her family to go through all 12 years of education and actually went into further vocational education in accounting in the 1950's. My paternal grandmother was PAID by my mother to do light housecleaning duties and childcare for me and my sister during the week at our home. I don't recall my mother ever cooking!

I'm 50 and I'm slowly turning into my paternal grandmother. I listen to the radio and don't watch tv, grow tomatoes and marigolds in cans, I'm always cooking and have a cleaning schedule, I do puzzles on a side table, I bought slightly retro cat-eyeglasses like hers, and I've actually considered keeping them on a chain, I gave up coloring my hair several years ago so I'm 90% white-haired (my mother would have hated that!!)...

The worst is that I bought this apron for myself so my paternal grandmother transformation is complete 🤦🏻‍♀️ I'm hoping the photo attaches but it's an apron worn by grandmothers who were born in 1916 like mine.

Flasks were derided by me aged about 15 but what a great invention and environmentally friendly too. I love the tartan retro ones. A
Nice China mug is a must have for my tea indoors. Tastes better.
Seat covers for the car. A boot tidy thing.
Looking at free catalogues in newspapers and thinking ' that looks a good idea' ..
Upright armchairs.

Apron is lovely

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/12/2020 19:56

I make dh a 1.75ltr flask of tea every morning. It’s less work throughout the day than constantly boiling the kettle.

MrsToothyBitch · 14/12/2020 01:08

Bought my thermos as a MN suggestion when I went back to work after lockdown in case the microwave was no more for heating up homemade soup. Work itchen intact but have used thermos for other stuff & omg- revelation.

I'm way past that! I actually buy them now! Mainly disability aids! I resisted for a long time to my own detriment and now think I was silly and stubborn to do so! Make my life so much easier!

Sweetpea1532 · 14/12/2020 03:36

@elp30
That apron is adorable! Good find!
I'm sorry you lost your mum at such a young age....she sounds like she was an incredible woman...and way ahead of her time! Good for her!
Glad you had a loving nan to take care of you

Chottie · 14/12/2020 04:37

@ssd

Another one here who has been bereft since losing her mum...
Me too. My mum died 17 years ago, I think of her everyday. No one can replace your mum.
Ddot · 17/12/2020 07:29

Dullardmullard · 17/12/2020 09:57
