I am struggling what to get my DM for Christmas. So far she has some perfume and a box of sweets from the grand kids. I was thinking a nice cashmere scarf and gloves? Is it a bit shit? Shes 65(ish [hmmm] ) if that makes a difference?

Theatre tickets, a weekend away, vouchers for her favourite restaurant - all a bit up in the air as to when we can do these things again but an IOU for any of these things is good

if she likes gardening ( as I do and also in my 60's!) there are hosts of delightful gifts: top quality gardening gloves and kneeler;
a set of "heritage" standard garden tools or hand tools, new secateurs,
a potted bay/box or olive tree;
an outdoor clock or mirror for the garden wall/fence;
a pair of large garden pots/containers
if still not certain you'll pick the right thing there are always National Garden gift vouchers - these always feel much more welcome than usual gift tokens as the browsing , planning and selecting of new garden plants is as much of a pleasure as actually owning the plants themselves...

I would be easy to buy for (I am that age category ) so anything arty, watercolours, paper, sketch pad etc; Flowers sound good too (who buys them for themselves? ); seeds for planting in or out; magazine subcription; cook boxes; puzzle books....... I could go on and on but no one I know will read this anyway so I will smile at the new slippers etc.

I'm around the same age and wouldn't appreciate scarf or gloves as I have plenty. I hate cashmere as it gets eaten by moths,. I'd like books, smellies something like l'cochrane and nice chocolates. No gin either.

OP, depends on your mum. I bought mine (70) a shawl in her favourite colour which she wears all the time indoors and out as she feels the cold. That's kind of like a scarf but a bit more versatile? You get lovely ones in TK Max.

ps. I am totally uninspired this year, I'm sure most people are - there's been too much other stuff to think about in 2020!

I've just been chatting to my (almost) grown up boys about presents. They wanted a list so I sent them a few inexpensive items for all the crafty things I like to do, such as paint, or icing nozzles etc. There's nothing on the list over £12. I've told them not to buy anything that's not on the list (unless it's chocolate) as they are students with little money and I don't actually need anything.

I've spent the best part of 2yrs sorting and decluttering the house of things that we neither use or need.

I tend to give my friends useful presents these days that I know they want/need, or something that they wouldn't just go and buy for themselves.
