I am struggling what to get my DM for Christmas. So far she has some perfume and a box of sweets from the grand kids. I was thinking a nice cashmere scarf and gloves? Is it a bit shit? Shes 65(ish [hmmm] ) if that makes a difference?

I got my mum a box of Thornton’s and a voucher for M&S. Thank goodness I didn’t get Debenhams like she wanted

Hmm1234 · 05/12/2020 19:05

Some Ugg boots to match!

MummyMayo1988 · 05/12/2020 19:13

Who doesn't love the feel of cashmere?! 😍
I had a cashmere jumper as a teen - it was a present from my mum that she saved for months to buy me. I bloody loved that jumper 😍

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 05/12/2020 19:13

I'm the same {ish} age as your DM and I would love a cashmere scarf and gloves. I would also love a magazine or flower subscription. Last year my DD bought DH and I a National Trust subscription and even with the pandemic we have had our money's worth.

shariG · 05/12/2020 19:35

I brought my Mum a flower subscription last year and she has loved having a bunch every month.
I haven’t read other replies but I think a more tailored personal present is nicer than a scarf even if it is cashmere.

How about a month subscription to the Feel Good Book Club? Uplifting books, with tissue wrapped small items- eg hand made soap, a make your own hanging star kit, flower seeds....plus inspirational quotes. All proceeds go to the Samaritans. It's lovely when the box arrives... www.thefeelgoodbookclub.com/

I mean a 3 month subscription

jam30 · 05/12/2020 19:41

The past few years I have got my mum and her partner Virgin days out, afternoon teas to Royal Pavillion, Kew Gardens etc or just a voucher to use one their choice. They were thrilled with the first one and asked for those again. I get her perfume, other nice type gifts for her birthday, mother’s day etc. I don’t find my Mum hard to buy for at all. There must be certain things your Mum likes to base ideas on? My Mum loves a pashmina. Anything black, gold and cream themed. Collects a certain pottery and enjoys a good find. A favourite present was picture made by my sister and I that was based on the colour schemes in her home...

SadSecretSanta · 05/12/2020 19:44

That sounds lovely. My mum would be over the moon.

mussymummy · 05/12/2020 19:45

My mum she 75 is quite hard to buy for so I got her an annual subscription for her favourite gardening magazine? Would your DM like / appreciate something like that?

Seriously1996 · 05/12/2020 19:56

I would be thrilled if one of my children bought me a matching scarf and glove set. Regardless if it were cashmere or not

Seriously1996 · 05/12/2020 20:01

Your mum sounds like a dream jam30 . My mum can be difficult to buy for . Nothing she receives is ever quite right

Bobbi73 · 05/12/2020 20:25

Is she a national trust sort of person? Someone bought us a family subscription and it's been brilliant up to this year. So many gardens and houses to visit. Would that work?

alongtimeagoandfaraway · 05/12/2020 20:28

Rather than the cosy magazine subscriptions - gardens, good housekeeping etc- why not something like Radical Notions magazine theradicalnotion.org/about/ ? Good writing, interesting content and not treating your 65 yr old mother like someone ancient with no interest outside their own 4 walls.

I’m late 50s and work with women in their late 20s and 30s. The way they talk about their mums (affectionate but...) could be quite amusing (if it wasn’t depressing) especially when I point out they are the same age as me.

Ddot · 05/12/2020 20:51

Get ethically sourced then lovely

FelicisNox · 05/12/2020 21:27

Get her an experience voucher i.e afternoon tea.

GYNisaliarWTF · 05/12/2020 21:28

@HappygoLucie I want to be your mum and I’m 27 😂

MrsBa · 05/12/2020 21:55

How about a magazine subscription, Gardening, Cooking, Countryfile?
I personally wouldn't want a scarf and gloves (especially cashmere) bought for me. I prefer to chose my own as I'm a bit fussy about colours and patterns. Love my (birthday present) subscription to Gardeners World magazine it's something I never got to but myself, but always enjoyed looking at it in Dentist waiting room!

Creativenina · 05/12/2020 22:48

I find it really hard to buy for my parents as they are at the age where they have everything plus they also live abroad. I usually book them a 3 night break in a 4 or 5 star hotel for just after Christmas. They love it as they have that to look forward to after a busy Christmas.

Mitzimccormack · 05/12/2020 23:12

I’m a couple of years younger than your mum. Hasn’t she got any interests / hobbies. I like my garden and would really appreciate the sort of lovely thing that’s just a bit too frivolous to buy myself. Floral leather gauntlets, a really smart gardening apron, a beautiful bare root rose, or a miniature fruit tree in a tub. Or books. A fabulous coffee table book, jo malone perfume? A subscription to something - I have bought somebody a Readly subscription. Every magazine you can think of every month online for 7.99 a month. Snoop around her bathroom to see what toiletries she likes. Fabulous skincare is always good. Hope this is a bit helpful.

Irenew · 05/12/2020 23:24

How about Turtle Doves Recycled cashmere wrist warmers or neck warmers?

caringcarer · 06/12/2020 00:56

I always think a scarf is for a person you don't know particularly well eg child's boyfriend. Flower subscription is nice, earrings, a nice photo frame, bone china cup and saucer.

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 06/12/2020 01:25

A gardening hamper sounds like a good idea Smile

If she's into roses David Austin are great for top notch roses and gift vouchers.
roses here

Charleyhorses · 06/12/2020 07:42

I bought my mum Tile. It's a way of finding keys and mobile phones and stuff.
Best present ever

Idontwannadance1 · 06/12/2020 08:10

I have made my mum a hamper with wine, chocs, snacks and nibbles she likes etc etc. She is on her own for Christmas so I thought it would take a while for her to open it all (yes I’ve actually wrapped everything in the hamper!)
