Are Londoners more intelligent?

tothinkofsomething · 03/12/2020 23:18

My Dad made a big thing when we moved out of London ( Zone 6 type expensive green Commuter belt area). We moved into North Hampshire. He basically was saying that outside the magical barrier of the M25 that the level of education is a lot lower. My Dc are just at the start of their school journeys and I have nothing to compare to. But his thoughts were that if my DC was top of their class in Hampshire that would be lower than in London. I'm guessing this depends on area of London? Also our estate agent said we shouldn't move out as we would struggle to get back in.

Anyone remember the Capital Radio ad? I’ve done a version for OP

🎤Doop de doop de doo
I’m a Londoner
I’ve a high IQ
Maybe it’s because I’m a Londoner
I know more than you

I feel it when I’m riding the northern line
I don’t waste the time
I read all the greats

I get a funny feeling inside of me
My brains are just too big
But while I am lifelong Londoner
I know others aren’t thick!🎤

I've got that in my head now.

They're all straw-chewing yokels past the Watford Gap. Your every utterance will be met with jaw-dropping wonder at your Einstein-like supereme intelligence. You won't be able to get back into London by the way. There are plans to encircle London with an electrified Ring Of Steel so t'Northerners (aka anyone past the Watford Gap service station) can't get in. Same goes for anyone who had the nerve to leave London and go into the wilds. So you've had it. Bet you wish you'd known that earlier on.

This thread has given me a good laugh Grin

I’m afraid your DF is talking insulting nonsense.

The “brain drain” of London attracting talented people to work there, thus sucking some talent away from other regions isn’t entirely untrue- but people who live in London are not themselves inherently more intelligent. Whether there’s a higher than average number of degree educated people there I’m not sure - but the general intelligence level is standard across the U.K.

North Hants is hardly devoid of cultured, naice, educated people - it’s expensive commuter territory!

State secondaries are marginally better in London in general terms- but Hants has some of the best schools in the U.K. If my DH will agree to look as far out as there when we look to move it’d definitely be high up on my list.

Your DF’s comment actually makes him sound quite uneducated...

Given the level of the writing and grammar in your OP I can only assume that your move to Hampshire has played havoc with your ability to structure a decent piece of writing or your dad's theory about the greater intelligence of Londoners is a load of bollocks.

What a ridiculous suggestion! The answer is quite clearly no.

CherryValanc · 04/12/2020 00:50

@HeyDuggeesCakeBadge

Yes absolutely, us Northerners are basically walking lombotomies.
Evidently you have had a sneaky visit to London. Lombotomies is a big word!

Well done!! Gold star for you.

GarlicSoup · 04/12/2020 00:52

Please could you rephrase this in simpler terms OP?

bitheby · 04/12/2020 00:55

I was born in London, lived in other parts of England, went to Cambridge University, moved back to London and now live in Wales.

My IQ must be all over the shop.

@HeyDuggeesCakeBadge definitely

I must have dreamt my 9 GCSE’s, 4 A levels and 2 degrees Hmm

Blufandango · 04/12/2020 01:06

Well we took the bairns down London and when we got there the man on the train said "King's Cross" so we didn't get off because the youngest has an egg allergy and I was worried that all the King's men and horses would be chucking eggs around because of like that film when the King was angry and there was an egg what fell off a wall and smashed. But when we got back, our lad's mam said there is no King anymore, its all Made in Chelsea now, so I think yes.

Gretnacastle · 04/12/2020 01:10

@tothinkofsomething

I'm talking generally, general level of intelligence, obviously there are intelligent people living all over. Is there statistics on this ?
I haven't read the whike thread and assume someone else has already picked up on this.

"Is there statistics on this" is either someone trying to be funny, or someone proving that the intelligence London matrix is broken.

sneakysnoopysniper · 04/12/2020 01:11

I can recall staying at a hotel in Bruges and being on a table with two younger men. We had a conversation in which they told me how much more intelligent and sophisticated people from the South were compared with the North.

That night they came back legless at 2 am and woke up everyone in the hotel with their noise.

Next morning at breakfast I greeted them with "Morning gentleman, was last nights behaviour an example of southern sophistication and intelligence?!" I then explained to the bemused international onlookers in the dining room that people who live in the South of England consider they are superior to those in the North. There was a lot of booing and the pair quickly exited the dining room to hisses, cat calls and a slow hand clap.

That morning they checked out.

SheepandCow · 04/12/2020 01:14

Hampshire (where OP has headed) is in the south.

Diva66 · 04/12/2020 01:15

No. If they were they’d move out of London.

Nikhedonia · 04/12/2020 01:18

Yes, it's true. Essentially, the further you move away from London the less evolved our fellow man is.

They are pretty obsessed with fire and meat in the north. Not big on cutlery or critical thinking, though.
