Are Londoners more intelligent?

426 replies

tothinkofsomething · 03/12/2020 23:18

My Dad made a big thing when we moved out of London ( Zone 6 type expensive green Commuter belt area). We moved into North Hampshire. He basically was saying that outside the magical barrier of the M25 that the level of education is a lot lower. My Dc are just at the start of their school journeys and I have nothing to compare to. But his thoughts were that if my DC was top of their class in Hampshire that would be lower than in London. I'm guessing this depends on area of London? Also our estate agent said we shouldn't move out as we would struggle to get back in.

There may be a higher concentration of intelligent people due to the larger population that live there and the bias of jobs in London that attract ‘intelligent’ people.

However that does not mean that your IQ level drops as soon as you leave Kings Cross

SlightDrizzle · 03/12/2020 23:38

@Hardbackwriter Grin

Or Skippy.

PickAChew · 03/12/2020 23:38

Is there statistics on this ?

Surely a genius from London can find this out (and speak proper English, like)

Definitely not, some intelligent pet might move to London to start their careers, but with Covid that trend might stop
What, like Lassie?

Skippy tried to boost his career by moving to Shepherds Bush.

SallySaidHi · 03/12/2020 23:39

I know a lot of londoners think civilization stops at the M25, but that's taking Londoncentric to a whole new level.

Having lived in the north, south and Scotland I can confirm people are equally intelligent and stupid everywhere. Assuming you are being serious, as other posters have said some jobs in London attract intelligent people however they may not be from London and these jobs also exist outside of London, the average intelligence of Londoners is not any higher than anywhere else in the UK and your dad sounds like a snob with a big ego.

Mydogmylife · 03/12/2020 23:42

Well, the op has really answered her own question hadn't she? No Londoners are not automatically more intelligent, her dad being a prime example . Sorry but this type of ignorance really winds me up.

HeronLanyon · 03/12/2020 23:42

I live in zone one. We have barriers at our border with zone 2 where iq testing is done. Entrants to zone 1 not passing the test can come in for short time to work etc but must wear head mask and keep distant.

Many of them can be spotted on Oxford street regent street and Covent Garden areas gathering for support and safety, poor dears.

Obviously.
Surprised you don’t know all of this op.

SarahAndQuack · 03/12/2020 23:43

@BLToutanowhere

I've got me whippet, me cloth cap and a nice book with really soft pages for me outside privy. We may not be clever like you southern types but we're happy.

This whole thread delighted me, but especially the idea that a really intelligent person would trust their estate agent. Cos, you know, they never have vested interests in making you stick around in their area ...

BefuddledPerson · 03/12/2020 23:46

There is a vague bell ringing in my head about an educational impact in some urban schools apparently from having disproportionately high numbers of EAL children from highly educated families. I wasn't aware of this and was surprised to read it, but apparently it is measurable and does skew numbers in London up. I could have misremembered the research mind Grin

hobbyiscodefordogging · 03/12/2020 23:47

I don't know about London, but I think I heard that Hampshire is well below national average intelligence. Or something about leaving an important part of one's brain somewhere in a field in Hampshire.

Plonque · 03/12/2020 23:47

I don't think I live in London, but I couldn't be sure. There are trees outside, which makes me think it's definitely not London.

ArthursRoundTable · 03/12/2020 23:48

That's a huge generalisation. Can sort of see what he means. There's just more things going on in London (When its not locked down) and that can mean children are exposed to more things to learn about. In London you have the option of visiting all the museums and cultural events, so kids can just learn a bit more without realising that they're learning. Doesn't mean you can't do that without being in London, but it can be a bit harder.

Saying that, a lot of Londoners take being in London for granted and don't make the best use of the culture on their doorstep. That's not very wise now, is it?!

Ah, but Damon Albarn sang about "Parklife" and he's from that London.
boys3 · 03/12/2020 23:48

They elected Boris as mayor.

Twice.

I think you have your answer

HeronLanyon · 03/12/2020 23:49

So
Maybe that’s what D.C. was seeking with his ‘glasses test’ in Barnard Castle

MiddleClassProblem · 03/12/2020 23:52

Mi5 and MI6 are based in London so maybe those two exact addresses are more likely to have intelligent people in them than the average office... Is he very postcode specific?

curtainsfort · 03/12/2020 23:54

@tothinkofsomething

I'm talking generally, general level of intelligence, obviously there are intelligent people living all over. Is there statistics on this ?

Fuck yeah. They are everywhere - just like the idiots.

Homebody12 · 03/12/2020 23:54

No, but there must be a “brain drain” towards London as so many large organisations and companies are based so graduates move there.

Chloemol · 03/12/2020 23:56

Your father is talking a load of twaddle

GrumpyHoonMain · 03/12/2020 23:58

Most people who work in London commute from outside the M25 so from that perspective they’re the ones who are smarter.

I saw Flipper swimming up the Thames once. He was trying to swim under Traitor's Gate so he could join a tour of the Tower. He said he had never had an interest in history until he crossed the Thames Barrier.

@Chienloup 😂
