Are Londoners more intelligent?

My Dad made a big thing when we moved out of London ( Zone 6 type expensive green Commuter belt area). We moved into North Hampshire. He basically was saying that outside the magical barrier of the M25 that the level of education is a lot lower. My Dc are just at the start of their school journeys and I have nothing to compare to. But his thoughts were that if my DC was top of their class in Hampshire that would be lower than in London. I'm guessing this depends on area of London? Also our estate agent said we shouldn't move out as we would struggle to get back in.

@LynetteScavo academics, tech startups, biolabs, and general local population of Cambridge, who choose to live there all their lives, would disagree with you. Students, while high iq, come and go. Also, that 'fact' about students mostly being from London, isn't true. I'm in the know.

Haha! It was a joke - of course it's not a fact Grin It's as silly as saying Londoners are more intelligent.

Wow.

LynetteScavo · 13/02/2021 15:47

@ThePankhurstConnection - yes I was being sarcastic. I went to school with several northerners who went on to Oxford and Cambridge. Grin

Don't believe everything you read on the internet. Wink

Betaalpha · 13/02/2021 15:50

@LynetteScavo oh dear, sorry for getting all wound up!

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 13/02/2021 15:51

@SallySaidHi

I know a lot of londoners think civilization stops at the M25, but that's taking Londoncentric to a whole new level.
Do you really know this? Sounds a bit ignorant to me. I've lived in London all my life and I know no-one, NO-ONE, that thinks this.
Embroideredstars · 13/02/2021 15:54

Hilarious!

LaurieFairyCake · 13/02/2021 15:56

I've heard of someone taking this further

Wouldn't let their child apply to Oxford/Cambridge as 'provincial' and only LSE would do Hmm

I thought I'd heard every London bias until then

HelloDulling · 13/02/2021 16:01

Here in Wales I it has taken me since 3rd Dec to read all 17 pages of this thread. We Welshies are all in the slow readers group. Not that we have schools, just muddy holes in the ground.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 13/02/2021 16:06

In London you have the option of visiting all the museums and cultural events, so kids can just learn a bit more without realising that they're learning. Doesn't mean you can't do that without being in London, but it can be a bit harder

You're right it's a cultural desert here in Bath, absolutely no history whatsoever.

crystaltips98 · 13/02/2021 16:06

I'm glad I don't know you.

Pinkblueberry · 13/02/2021 16:21

He basically was saying that outside the magical barrier of the M25 that the level of education is a lot lower.

Thick comments like that doesn’t say much for his education and intelligence tbh. You posting on here to check doesn’t also doesn’t say much about yours.

Squirrelblanket · 13/02/2021 16:29

This thread really made me laugh back in December, so thank you to whoever resurrected it so I could laugh at it all over again.

We don't get much entertainment here up north you see, with the lack of books and museums and that sort of thing.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 13/02/2021 16:29

Grin I'm sorry OP but you have made me laugh. You do realise that even asking this question does not present your own level of intelligence highly?

Oh do you know I needed a laugh today, if it helps I have lived and worked in London , outside of London in the south east and in wales. I even attended school in America (Texas if that matters). I am highly intelligent in several aspects,I have a law degree , several industry specific diplomas , including the qualifications and ability to teach in my industry and have been published within the industry regularly , I also just hit my head on the doorway that I have lived with for 2 years and forgot was there as I leant to kiss DP. Then I fell over the dog because I thought she was a cushion.

Grin Make of all of that what you will.

Changechangychange · 13/02/2021 16:30

@Crikeyblimey

Yep. Every single person outside of London is really think. HTH 🤔
Amazing choice of post for a typo Grin
Ninkanink · 13/02/2021 16:32

Yes. And your daddy is more smart than all the smart people, too.

Torvean · 13/02/2021 16:34

I live in the real NE in Scotland. We have a higher level of Dr, engineers and lawyers, but plenty of minimum wage.
I treat ppl just the same. Character counts for more.

Campions · 13/02/2021 16:49

@Conkergame

OP I do have similar worries about leaving London! Blush not so much about intelligence but about being liberal, open-minded and cultured. We want to move this year to get more space but I’m worried about the “small town” mentality and not being able to make friends so easily Blush
I think your own lack of open-mindedness will be the biggest hurdle to making friends.

Worried about people being open-minded, a small town mentality, cultured and liberal? Do you have any insight into how that comes across to people reading it?

Gilead · 13/02/2021 16:57

Born and educated in South West London. I live in the North East now and an the Queen of Newcastle.

YouAreYourBestThing · 13/02/2021 16:59

The north/south divide is clearly alive and kicking 🤦‍♀️

Unbelievable!

Christmasfairy2020 · 13/02/2021 17:09

Hmmm. I would say your cleverer if you leave London lol. Who wants to live in a flat with no garden with lots of knife crime, gangs etc. Where most of the average earners struggle daily.

HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur · 13/02/2021 17:27

Agree with you @Christmasfairy2020 the countryside has as much, if not more, than urban areas.

I think really it all depends on your understanding of intelligence, if you believe that that is shown purely through academic performance then perhaps your critical thinking skills are somewhat limited.

I read it again as I had posted and thought oh DOH! She's taking the p. So forgive me and my snappy little fingers Grin

ThePankhurstConnection · 13/02/2021 19:04

@netflixandthrill

Of course Londoners are more intelligent. I grew up in Greater London and I always hid the fact that I was technically born in Surrey at our cheese and wine parties, lest someone banish me to the scullery or send me to work on a distant farm. I've had to have several people who knew of my true background executed.

I'm not a snob about it though- I try to make friends in whichever part of the U.K I travel to. Last time was a disaster. I tried to take my new non-London friends to an art gallery (after explaining what an art gallery was to them). Sadly, they didn't understand that the paintings weren't real and they started furrowing their brows and bashing the pictures with their fists in a vain attempt to 'free' the people trapped in the painting. We all got asked to leave the gallery and I can never return.

I see this thread was a zombie so I am sorry to bump it twice but I have to applaud this post. Very funny - cheers netflix Grin
