Are Londoners more intelligent?

My Dad made a big thing when we moved out of London ( Zone 6 type expensive green Commuter belt area). We moved into North Hampshire. He basically was saying that outside the magical barrier of the M25 that the level of education is a lot lower. My Dc are just at the start of their school journeys and I have nothing to compare to. But his thoughts were that if my DC was top of their class in Hampshire that would be lower than in London. I'm guessing this depends on area of London? Also our estate agent said we shouldn't move out as we would struggle to get back in.

@dottiedodah maybe you went to a bad school or London is inferior to South Yorkshire after all; my DD started french at 5...

monkeysox · 04/12/2020 19:44

Fucking hell. How insulting.

LolaSmiles · 04/12/2020 19:45

Yes absolutely, us Northerners are basically walking lombotomies
Grin

Krampusnacht · 04/12/2020 19:50

Oop 'ere in Yorkshire we're barely more than Neanderthals 😂

This can't be a serious question??

willsantausesantatize · 04/12/2020 19:50

Haven't read the whole thread ..
To be honest my dh went to school in East London in the 70s and he is much more intelligent than me and even studied Latin in a normal mixed comp ! He had a great state education. Mine was woeful!
I don't think londerers are more intelligent but schools have more money pumped into them so teaching is better I think?
They are much more savvy.

SufferingFromLongLockdown · 04/12/2020 19:51

You're asking about intelligence but talking about education?
A less efficient education doesn't make someone less intelligent.
There are lots of different intelligences and they don't all correspond with jumping through academic hoops. Many people who have astute business sense didn't get on very well academically. People who have been very successful academically can lack common sense and emotional intelligence.

backinthebox · 04/12/2020 19:56

@mumduty “it's not about a complex superiority it's about aspirations”

I’d start by aspiring to get my words in the right order! 🤣🤣 Seriously though, you think people outside London don’t have aspirations? I Am from outside of London and have huge aspirations, some of which I’ve already achieved - degree from a Russell Group uni? Got it (and not a London one either.) Fabulous jet-setting career with high salary? Got it. Nice house In the country with land around it to keep the horses on? Got it. Second home (in a ski resort?) Got it. National champion in my sport? Got it. Fab husband and lovely children? Got it. None of it, not a single little bit of it, required me to set foot in London for even a minute. And I aspire to more yet.

As bad as the OP is for assuming that people outside of London cannot be as intelligent as people from within the M25, you are just as bad for assuming only people from London could possibly have any sort of aspiration at all. I know dozens of people with aspirations, and weirdly most of them don’t live in London. People don’t just become brain-dead no-hopers if they don’t get the magic London fairy dust falling on them all the time!

SpectralPlot · 04/12/2020 20:01

What I don't like is the Anti-London reaction on this thread.

Believe me, OP's thoughts do not represent us at all.

My DH went to school in Manchester and also studied Latin.....

🤷🏼‍♀️

Tinkerbell456 · 04/12/2020 20:09

So, being in London immediately means you are a genius huh? So how do you lot explain Boris Johnson? On the other hand, Shakespeare hailed from Stratford, Stephen Hawking from Oxford etc etc.

willsantausesantatize · 04/12/2020 20:10

I just think I was impressed that dh went to a school in East London and knew Latin!
Blown away in fact.

Poorlykitten · 04/12/2020 20:38

Went to a comp in Yorkshire, also studied Latin. Hmm

willsantausesantatize · 04/12/2020 20:39

My dh's education was so much better than mine !
It was a long time ago though.

funograph · 04/12/2020 20:53

While we all know it's a silly question, there is no need for all the anti-London rhetoric. OP does not represent London, thank goodness.

Also I think (or really hope) OP is asking about London vs regions school performance but came out very badly by calling some 55 million people in this country thick.

atotalshambles · 04/12/2020 20:56

Boris Johnson didn’t go to school in London !!!

blueshoes · 04/12/2020 21:41

my sister, a banker, once told me with all seriousness, that the most clever people in the country work in the City of London and for this reason she wouldn't work anywhere else. (I don't work in the City). She completely believes this to be true. It's bullshit of course, but just goes to show the arrogance of bankers.

This is not true. It is City of London AND New York City.

Hello I am here, reporting in from the northern edge of the shire. Don't worry it's taken me an age to wade through all your GCSEs, A-levels, multiple degrees and MA's. I just couldn't concentrate on reading all the replies due to those damn whippets barking everywhere. Then I tripped on a flat cap.

Firstly I am confused obviously because we are all judged on our exam results at some point so all this "there's a difference between intelligence and educational attainment." I can't just rock up and say look I'm iteligant despite the fact I got a third for my degree?! People judge you, it's life. My Dad said that a third from a good university is worth more than a 2:2 from a poor one. I also get that my Dad loves me and probably wants to make me feel better Grin I don't actually believe everything he says, just most of it.

If somewhere has a top university, surely it's only representative of the area if ONLY people from that area go there. So there are some bad theories on here too.

And yes I did misspell that on purpose... No I'm sadly not a troll and this is true. But I love biscuits. Is that outing?

If London dwellers are so smart then why spend £106 billion building a railway to Birmingham?

Oooohbehave · 04/12/2020 23:09

Well you're from London so .....

You didn’t misspell anything so don’t worry about that.

You simply used the completely wrong word, which made you look like a poorly educated bafoon

YouokHun · 04/12/2020 23:22

@Gretnacastle are bafoons particularly poorly educated? Are they a particularly high grade buffoon existing only outside the M25?

NuniaBeeswax · 04/12/2020 23:58

"made you look like a poorly educated bafoon"

Oh dear.

SheepandCow · 05/12/2020 00:04

@Manolinette

It's not Londoners spending squandering taxpayer money on that white elephant (as if we need to spend billions on what will be obselete technology to shave just 20 minutes off a journey). It's the government splashing the (taxpayer) cash.
SheepandCow · 05/12/2020 00:06

So did OP get what they wanted?
Has this turned into a Londoner bashing thread, as she hoped?
(It's been a busy day and I can't be bothered to catch up through all the posts).

Nah most people are laughing/taking the piss. As expected.
