To turn down a 3x salary job?

Fressia123 · 03/12/2020 11:33

I'm really really torn. Earlier in the year I got offered a job that pays £60k. I couldn't take it as it required relocation. They just got back to me to say they're happy to offer same role, different location but within commuting distance (1 hour drive). My current job pays £21k. I love what I'm building with it but I seriously doubt it will ever get beyond £30k. So it's between loving my company/job and the £££s. I'm absolutely torn.

Take it!!! Think of all the things you can buy (incl help) to make life easier - alternatively stuff into savings and retire ‘two years earlier for every year you work’

Earache2020 · 04/12/2020 20:43

I would take the higher paying job. If you saved and invested all that extra income you could retire early and take a lower paid job or just do hobbies that you are passionate about?

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 04/12/2020 20:46

Do it for a year make connections, get additional skills
Dont languish in current work, they’re stringing you along with promises of opportunities in a year

Fressia123 · 04/12/2020 20:48

I'll get an interim payrise in February, but ultimately if they don't deliver in a year's time they know, I'll definitely be out. I've made this VERY clear.

Please do it!!!! So many uncertainties this year, I took up a full time opportunity to do with covid and lockdowns etc and I feel so fortunate every day. To be employed and have a guaranteed income this year is a luxury.

Fressia123 · 04/12/2020 20:57

My company / industry has exploded this year

OP posts:
FancySomeChips · 04/12/2020 20:59

Def do it
Bank the money
Let something good come out of this year

TatianaBis · 04/12/2020 21:04

@Fressia123

I'll get an interim payrise in February, but ultimately if they don't deliver in a year's time they know, I'll definitely be out. I've made this VERY clear.
You may not get this opportunity again though. You may leave, go sideways to a job with similar pay that you like less.

You have to take opportunities when they arise.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 04/12/2020 21:12

In a year time you’ll have declined a 3x payrise on a promise that may never materialise
As opposed to taking a stepping stone job to open other opportunities

Fressia123 · 04/12/2020 21:26

But it's nights in an industry I have no interest in.

OP posts:
HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 04/12/2020 21:30

So stay put,get strung along on a promise with an employer who underpays you
Or do a side way move, get skills d then you’ll have more economic leverage

IsobelElsie123 · 04/12/2020 21:54

85% of contributors are saying ‘take it’ but you are putting extra obstacles in the way (ie night work and no interest in the industry....) so stay where you are and we can move onto comment on the next dilemma

RainbowRaine · 04/12/2020 22:01

@Fressia123 Well done and very pleased you have it in writing.

I'm assuming you have made the decision to stay?

Ironingontheceiling · 04/12/2020 22:10

@Fressia123

But it's nights in an industry I have no interest in.
Why did you apply then?
Mamanyt · 04/12/2020 23:32

It entirely depends on where your priorities are. If you are living comfortably on what you make, if "getting ahead)" is secondary to personal fulfillment, and you love what you do, stay there. There's a very true saying, "If you love what you are doing, you will never work a day in your life." The price you pay is at the end of your working life, when you have a smaller pension, but the reward is waking up every day and looking forward to going to work.

If, on the other hand, you measure success by the size of your bank account, are you crazy? TAKE THE NEW JOB AT THE HIGHER PAY!

Fressia123 · 05/12/2020 07:58

@Ironingontheceiling because they only disclosed it was nights at offer stage. I think I could like the job but struggle to see where I'd go next.

OP posts:
Fressia123 · 05/12/2020 08:09

I think I'd potentially take it for less money but more family friendly hours.

I also prefer office based corporate type jobs, being on conference calls, sending emails, looking for new partnerships, etc.

And as I've mentioned I was headhunted and I do think that makes a difference in how a possible job is perceived.

If the industry isn’t the right industry for you then I would probably leave it, once logistics is on your cv it’s hard to move away from it. That’s coming from experience. And the challenge is if logistics isn’t your background then it’s hard to progress in it. I ended up taking a drop in salary to get back into an industry / role that I enjoyed and with a company that was awful, thankfully
finally I’m back in a company that I respect and a salary that I’m worth.

The only thing I’d say is working for a low salary and feeling like a dog in a wheel can be soul destroying if you’re struggling money wise but if you love the job, have the flexibility you need, and a partner that reassures that happiness is most important then stay with where you are, especially with commitments in writing from your CEO. If you move and hate the new job you’re back to square one.

Fressia123 · 05/12/2020 09:32

Thanks @Nothing7 that confirms what I thought (that if get into logistics then that's what you are). And it's something that I really don't see enjoying long term

Don’t take it. Amazon is a crap employer. I used to live in seattle. Many stayed because the stock rose and staying could mean early retirement. But absolutely everyone hates them.

Usernamerequired · 05/12/2020 09:57

So long as its a secure job go for it! And congratulations!!

mrsswayze · 05/12/2020 10:03

Money isn't everything happiness is more important as both myself and dh discovered we're happy having a lot less money than was the pressure that was involved in commuting .
And no we don't have a lot of money but happiness is so more important so I. Would t take it

Ironingontheceiling · 05/12/2020 10:05

If you want a corporate office job, why did you apply ?

Waveysnail · 05/12/2020 10:06

I think I'd do some research about what salary everyone else is on at the company. Possible freedom of info act. Dont sell yourself short with them. Woman are often underpaid because we dont haggle. With your management experience surely such a senior role should be 50k plus

Ironingontheceiling · 05/12/2020 10:10

Freedom of information only applies to government bodies and public authorities. It doesn’t apply to a private company like Amazon.
