AIBU to think you can't name 5 foreign films

I have moved to the UK from another country and I have noticed that on TV they only show American and English films/shows. In my country (ex ussr) foreign films/ TV series are quite popular and often shown at prime time but seems its not the case in the UK with few exceptions like bbc4. Am I wrong? Do people watch Indian, Brazilian,
Corean films? Please vote.
AIBU- I (and most of my friends/family) can name 5 foreign films produced in 5 different countries. If so, which films are these?
YANBU - I can't name 5 foreign films.

I'll start:
Fantomas -France
Seeta and Geeta - India
Wild rose - Mexico
The taming of the scoundrel- Italy
Mole cartoon - Czech

What exactly is the criteria for a foreign film to you? Must they be in a foreign language, set in a foreign English speaking country or produced by a company based in another country?

I’m not nitpicking I’m just thinking as I watch a lot of Welsh content but would that be classed as foreign as I’m practically on the border?

GlummyMcGlummerson · 02/12/2020 14:34

I'll bite - so what?

HijabiVenus · 02/12/2020 14:35

Is America not foreign?

PolarnOPirate · 02/12/2020 14:36

I can't but that's probably the 157th most interesting thing about me. I can barely concentrate on anything feature length anyway. Watch a fair bit of french netflix though thank you very much!

Icytundra · 02/12/2020 14:37

I can, but I speak 2 other languages and an married to a bilingual speaker of a third language. I'll watch any film as long as it's good, in any language.
So parasite, y tu Mama tambien, Bande de filles, die fetten Jahre sind vorbei, Chevalier (Greek)

TheEndisCummings · 02/12/2020 14:37

Easy...
Kuhle Wampe, Germany
metropolis, Germany
Nosferatu Germany
Ein Jahr mit 13 Monden, Germany
Die Bitteren Traenen con Petra Von Kant, Germany

Well, I am a German film buff!,,
But I could do most European countries, at least.

pinkbalconyrailing · 02/12/2020 14:37

the bridge
the killing
das boot
goodbye lenin
lola rennt

pinkbalconyrailing · 02/12/2020 14:37

bbc4 on saturday night has some gems.

TrialOfStyle · 02/12/2020 14:38

Isn’t there lots of foreign films and shows (usually badly dubbed) on Netflix?

Prime time TV shows are usually produced by the channel so of course it’s unlikely they’ll have many foreign movies and shows on there.

contrmary · 02/12/2020 14:39

YABU obviously.

The King of Devil's Island
Run Lola Run
Room in Rome
A Serbian Film
Battleship Potemkin
Seven Samurai
Throne of Blood
Sanjuro
Yojimbo
Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom
Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man

That's just ones I've watched in the past couple of months. All good, except A Serbian Film, which is horrific.

TheFuckingDogs · 02/12/2020 14:39

Is the mole cartoon Critter-Czech?!
La Haine (French)
The bicycle Thieves (Italian)
Engrenage (French and a tv series)
City of God (Brazilian)
And you’re right! I can’t name another 🤦‍♀️ Was going to cheat but won’t! Is Baise Moi a French film? If so then also that!

contrmary · 02/12/2020 14:39

Oh, how did I forget The Tit and the Moon

Fluffythefish · 02/12/2020 14:42

Claire's knee (French aka most boring film ever)
Parasite (Korean)
Betty Blue (French)
Subway (French)
The girl with the dragon tattoo (Swedish)

we watch quite a lot of films/tv in other languages - subtitles are fab :)

TheFuckingDogs · 02/12/2020 14:45

And Amelie!

TicTacTwo · 02/12/2020 14:45

Parasite won an Oscar so there will be a few who can tick that one off. (Korea)
There's also a long running thread by people who like K-drama.

It depends what you call foreign but there's quite a few popular subtitled programmed on Netflix- Narcos and Money Heist spring to mind.

There's a lot of Studio Ghibli fans here too.

Channel 4 is good for foreign content- Deutschland 83 was great

LaurieFairyCake · 02/12/2020 14:46

I can't - even though I've watched probably hundreds. I never remember names of films if they're in the language of the film.

I can barely remember titles of films in English

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 02/12/2020 14:46

The Lives of Others - Germany
Parasite - South Korea
Il Postino - Italy
In The Mood for Love - Hong Kong
Delicatessen - France

Do I get a prize? Or un prix? Or ein Preis? Grin.

steff13 · 02/12/2020 14:46

Why do I have to speak for my family and friends?

The Orphanage - Spain
Ju-On - Japan
Ringu - Japan
One Missed Call - Japan
Occult - Japan

I'm in the US, so any film originating in the UK is foreign for me.

subjecttoavailability · 02/12/2020 14:46

That's a fair question, I'd say foreign film is a film produced outside of US, UK, New Zealand, Canada and Australia, so Welsh probably won't qualify but Nigerian film in English would.

OP posts:
SlothWithACloth · 02/12/2020 14:46

I can name 6!

Monsoon Wedding
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
The Orphanage
Bombay
Pan’s Labyrinth
Mr Vampire

SlothWithACloth · 02/12/2020 14:47

Now there’s a few more others have mentioned that I know of.

randomname7208633 · 02/12/2020 14:47

I could probably name just about 5 off the top of my head.

City of God - Brazil
Victoria - Germany
Ringu (aka The Ring) - Japan
Battle Royale - Japan
The Cabinet of Dr Caligari - Germany

Does Mel Gibson's Apocalypto count? Probably not, but it's certainly culturally and linguistically far removed from Western cinema.

Netflix series Dark - Germany

That's all

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 02/12/2020 14:49

Of course I can. My DH and I watch international films far more than we watch English/US (in fact we hardly ever watch any unless they’re older classics or really good films; we can’t stand the utter tripe churned out these days).

These are the ones we’ve watched in the last couple of weeks:

Rare Exports (brilliant Christmas film, Finnish)
Kolya (Also a great film, Czech)
April 9th (Again, a really good film, Danish)
Ever been to the Moon (Pretty good, Italian)
Parasite (Very interesting, Korean)

TicTacTwo · 02/12/2020 14:51

Japanese/Korean horror was very popular a few years ago- The Grudge, The Ring, The Eye...

Hunger Games is very similar to Battle Royale

OneTC · 02/12/2020 14:52

Me and most of my friends could name 5+ foreign movies

1- accion mutante
2- Sonatine
3- Betty Blue
4- Man bites dog
5- Ma vie en rose
