AIBU to think you can't name 5 foreign films

I have moved to the UK from another country and I have noticed that on TV they only show American and English films/shows. In my country (ex ussr) foreign films/ TV series are quite popular and often shown at prime time but seems its not the case in the UK with few exceptions like bbc4. Am I wrong? Do people watch Indian, Brazilian,
Corean films? Please vote.
AIBU- I (and most of my friends/family) can name 5 foreign films produced in 5 different countries. If so, which films are these?
YANBU - I can't name 5 foreign films.

I'll start:
Fantomas -France
Seeta and Geeta - India
Wild rose - Mexico
The taming of the scoundrel- Italy
Mole cartoon - Czech

Thanks OP, I’ve been meaning to get a new name for a while and you’ve inspired me.

I’d go spontaneously for
7 Samurai (Japan)
7th Seal (Sweden)
Plein Soleil (France)
Run Lola Run (Germany)
Cinema Paradiso (Italy) but I could go on and on and on, especially for French films.

However I think that there’s no doubt that a large portion of the UK and US English monolingual population never watch films in another language.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 02/12/2020 15:50

Oh another couple of films I really liked:

Rams (Icelandic)
Under the Tree (Icelandic)

mangoandraspberries · 02/12/2020 15:51

Jules et Jim
Vovler
Le Diner des Connes
Women on a verge of a nervous breakdown
Amelie
Y tu mama tambien

Off the top of my head...

SchrodingersImmigrant · 02/12/2020 15:52

I quite get what OP is talking about. If you think about a freeview TV it doesn't show as big variety from different countries as freeview in some other countries might. Obviously that all has changed now with Netflix and prime, but in general freeview is like that.

CoconutGrove · 02/12/2020 15:52

Love the film Diabolomenthe. Seen it lots of times. Les Choristes is a favourite too

pompey38 · 02/12/2020 15:55

Eastern Europe all watch low budget cack that is why, plenty of soap operas and the Latin America telenovela’s , and not because your government gives you plenty of choice? they just don’t have the money to buy the newest trendiest films until after 5 years after release

Pukkatea · 02/12/2020 15:56

I think people who like horror films probably know a fair few as foreign horror is probably more mainstream than other genres? I see a fair bit of snobbery that foreign horror is always scarier than American. I recently watched The Wailing which was brilliant.

Walter Presents is free, isn’t it?
bridgetreilly · 02/12/2020 15:58

I'd say foreign film is a film produced outside of US, UK, New Zealand, Canada and Australia, so Welsh probably won't qualify but Nigerian film in English would.

That's a very weird definition of "foreign".

Myohmy111 · 02/12/2020 15:59

Lots of the above.

As well as Capernaum. A most wonderfully moving film from Lebanon.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 02/12/2020 16:03

Walter Presents is free, isn’t it?
Isn't that an online streaming? I am talking about basic tv

lunalulu · 02/12/2020 16:03

Gran Hotel
The Bridge
Bonus Family
Wings of Desire (Wim Wenders)
A short film about Love

And more

Those above are all fab, btw ☺️

CorianderQueen · 02/12/2020 16:04

Literally any American film.

Orangeboots · 02/12/2020 16:05

Les visiteurs
Amelie
La Haine
Cinema Paradiso
Jamon Jamon

Mydogisagentleman · 02/12/2020 16:06

I can, but i can’t see the point

loobyloo1234 · 02/12/2020 16:07

My DP is Italian so we watch a lot of films or series with subtitles. Unsure why your OP sounds like you are belittling British people though?

Spudina · 02/12/2020 16:07

I’ve thought of two French films I love. Populair about a typewriter competition set in the 60s. It looks amazing. And Le diner de cons about a dinner party where everyone brings an idiot. It was remade in English but the original is amazing.

Divebar · 02/12/2020 16:08

Dancer in the Dark
Lives of Others
4 months 3 weeks 2 days
The Intouchables
Whale Rider

Sadly I don’t get to watch many films of my choice nowadays so these are all a few years old.

NobodyKnowsTiddlyPom · 02/12/2020 16:08

Le Retour de Martin Guerre (France)
Y Tu Mama Tambien (Mexico I think? Randomly stayed up to watch it late one night on BBC2)
Delicatessen (France)
Ponyo (Japan)
Aniara (Sweden)

We do have quite a few French films at home because I used to watch them to practise my French as a teenager and we also have a vast array of Japanese anime that the children love.
I do actually agree with you that there aren't many non-English speaking films on UK television. I'm sure there used to be more when I was younger though.

JimmyTheBrave · 02/12/2020 16:09

Parasite (Korean)
Amelie (French)
Train to Busan (Korean)
City of God (Portuguese language, set in Brazil)
Battle Royale (Japanese)

lunalulu · 02/12/2020 16:11

Oh and can't miss:
Sex and Lucia
E tu mama tambien
Belle de jour
(Hmm bit of a theme going on above! 😅)

Divebar · 02/12/2020 16:12

Belittling British people - particularly English people is fair game apparently. I just saw someone on Instagram who has moved here recently laughing at all the funny backward things we do - like have washing machines in the kitchen & something about individual portions of wine apparently sold in plastic cups which I’ve never seen in my life.

noblegiraffe · 02/12/2020 16:12

@contrmary

Oh, how did I forget The Tit and the Moon
Oh. My. God.

I didn’t think anyone else in the entire world had seen this film. The baguette. It was just so bizarre.

species5618 · 02/12/2020 16:12

Populair about a typewriter competition set in the 60s
Sounds ........... awful to be honest Smile

loobyloo1234 · 02/12/2020 16:15

@Divebar

I've seen a few of those yes Smile Imagine having your washing machine in your bog though Confused

Just felt the OP was very 'you people are so uncultured' - love that so many people have replied with so many films though. The uncultured swines of the world Wink
