AIBU to think you can't name 5 foreign films

I have moved to the UK from another country and I have noticed that on TV they only show American and English films/shows. In my country (ex ussr) foreign films/ TV series are quite popular and often shown at prime time but seems its not the case in the UK with few exceptions like bbc4. Am I wrong? Do people watch Indian, Brazilian,
Corean films? Please vote.
AIBU- I (and most of my friends/family) can name 5 foreign films produced in 5 different countries. If so, which films are these?
YANBU - I can't name 5 foreign films.

I'll start:
Fantomas -France
Seeta and Geeta - India
Wild rose - Mexico
The taming of the scoundrel- Italy
Mole cartoon - Czech
@subjecttoavailability l know what you mean. It's more "specialty" foreign movies here. Most people I talked about movies with in the UK never heard of Policemen (or Troops as some translations say) of St Tropez with Louis de Funès. I always thought it's famous everywhere because it was just such a great comedy 😂 Lots of people told me there really weren't French movies on a TV here (note, I am talking pre all these super subscriptions). I don't know if that's right, but it was interesting to compare with what was on our TV.
Yes, its quite interesting to see completely different types of e.g. French films being popular in the UK . The most popular French film in soviet cinemas (50 mln tickets sold) was the 4 charlot musketeers , quite light-hearted if not to say silly comedy. Speaking about more modern films, Intouchables and Leon attracted a lot of views.

So to summarise, the film like

 1. Parasites, Korea
 2. Crouching tiger, hidden dragon, China
 3. Betty Blue, France
 4. Das boot, Germany
 5. Babette's Feast, Denmark
would be good examples of foreign films popular in the UK. Do you agree? Would it be correct to say that most of brits would heard of these films?

Dinner for One - German, 1963 New Year fixture that has definitely passed most UK people by

There's a good reason it passed us by, because it's rubbish. I watched it once in Germany to show willing. My German colleagues were amazed I had never heard of it, as they assumed we'd all watch it every new year, too, as it's an English film.

EBearhug · 03/12/2020 15:12

I think most British people will have heard of those films, yes.

French used to make lovely light hearted comedies. Come to think of it, we had lots of French stuff on a TV. I still fondly remember Il était une fois... Series. Once upon a time... Life/Human/and few more.
I ahve recently re watched La création du monde as well. That was probably my only Bible like education😂

Ginfordinner · 03/12/2020 15:33

M Hulot's holiday

ferretface · 03/12/2020 15:34

8 femmes - France
Parasite - South Korea
La lengua de las mariposas - Spain
Ciudad de Dios - Brazil
Das Leben der Anderen or Renn Lola Renn - Germany

I would consider most of these to have had international success though.

That's what I am after smile I have heard Nigeria (Nollywood) is the 2nd largest film producer in the world after Bollywood but I haven't seen any Nigerian movies

Type 'Nollywood' on Netflix and you'll get loads. Can't recommend one over the other for you though, you'll just have to find what you like amongst the wide selection of movies available there Smile

On Youtube, you can also type 'Nollywood' and you'll get some of the more "villagey" ones and other kinds too.

Also on Youtube, you can search for a channel called NdaniTV and watch a series called 'Skinny girl in transit'.

Is the mole cartoon Critter-Czech?! Yes, proudly made by Televisio Paha, Czechoslovakia :) I grew up on those :) and Rumcejsz, Lolka & Bolka, ...

Anything Kusturica, but Black cat, White cat is fav
M (192x, german)
Kieslowski trilogy (Blue, White, Red)
Enyedi Ildiko - Magic Hunter

movingonup20 · 03/12/2020 16:56

There's a fair amount of non English language content on bbc4 and late night movies they are shown from time to time. Personally I've watch a fair amount of French films because I speak French but one of my favourite films is Goodbye Lenin which is in German.

movingonup20 · 03/12/2020 16:57

And dd mostly watches Korean stuff with a bit of Japanese chucked in. Some Indian films are good but I'm not keen on the musical ones

CharityEscapeGoat · 03/12/2020 17:00

The Handmaiden / High Society - South Korea
Amelie / Les Diaboliques - France
My Neighbour Totoro / Kiki's Delivery Service / Spirited Away - Japan
Pan's Labyrinth - Spain
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai - India

DarkMintChocolate · 03/12/2020 17:03

DD is into anime - Japanese cartoons. I was standing in HMV once, trying to decide what to buy her for Xmas. As I had no idea, I asked the other people looking at them. There are certainly some people very keen and knowledgeable about anime!

Unfortunately, the only one I could remember the name of was Death Note, which is a tv series - because we watched the whole series!

GlitchStitch · 03/12/2020 17:05

I'm not really into films but I almost exclusively watch Turkish drama series. They are a different league IMO!

LynetteScavo · 03/12/2020 17:11

At a push I could probably name 10, but then I happily watch subtitles films.

Yes, and yes. But I have seen it (there, never in the UK).
realsunkissedtan · 03/12/2020 17:19

OP, there's also 'IrokoTV' on irokotv.com. It's like Netflix but for Nigerian (and other African) films/series.

Mcnotty · 03/12/2020 17:37

Amar, Akbar, Anthony - Indian
Enter the dragon - Chinese
Les Miserables - (I cheated there but might get a point 😁) French
Jenifa - Nigerian
Theres one I watched last yr but can’t remember the name. It was Korean and quite a hit. About this poor family, who all end up working for a rich family but neither of them disclose their identity. Then it all goes tits up. All subtitled.

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 03/12/2020 17:41

I've intentionally not read the thread in order not to bias things, but these are mine off the top of my head:

Parasite (Korea)
Okja (Korea)
Various K dramas

Betty Blue (France)
Le Grand Bleu (France)
Amelie (France)
Delicatessen (France)
Jean de Florette (France)

Spirited Away/Totoro/Princess Mononokye/Ponyo/Howls Moving castle etc (Japan)

Pan's Labaryth/The Devil's Backbone (Spain)
The Skin I live in (Spain)

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (China)

Any amount of skandi-noir TV dramas
Let the right one in (Sweden)

I am not a big film buff, and this feels like a relatively standard middle class watch list to me.

So a strong European/Asian theme! Reflecting, most of the films I've watched about Africa are actually American/British in terms of production I think? - eg Beasts of No Nation/Last King of Scotland

SayakaMurata · 03/12/2020 17:45

Parasite - South Korean
Jean de Florette and Manon des Source - French
Amelie - French
The Wave - Norwegian
The Handmaid - Japanese

Ylvamoon · 03/12/2020 18:02

Crouching Tiger Flying Dagger
Deutschland 86 (I hope mini series count)
The Wall (an other mini series)
Goodby Lenin
Das Experiment

Anyone9767 · 03/12/2020 18:12

Train to busan
Oldboy
Sympathy for lady vengance
Run lola run
District 13
District 9
Battle royal
Hero
Crouching tiger hidden dragon
Battle for red cliffe
House of flying daggers

That's just off the top of my head. I am sure there are many more.

Pikachubaby · 03/12/2020 18:38

@AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore did you see Grave of the fireflies?

Amazing (but sad)

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 05/12/2020 18:53

@Pikachubaby: just looked that up; no, but it looks fab, so on the list, thanks :-)
