AIBU to think you can't name 5 foreign films

I have moved to the UK from another country and I have noticed that on TV they only show American and English films/shows. In my country (ex ussr) foreign films/ TV series are quite popular and often shown at prime time but seems its not the case in the UK with few exceptions like bbc4. Am I wrong? Do people watch Indian, Brazilian,
Corean films? Please vote.
AIBU- I (and most of my friends/family) can name 5 foreign films produced in 5 different countries. If so, which films are these?
YANBU - I can't name 5 foreign films.

I'll start:
Fantomas -France
Seeta and Geeta - India
Wild rose - Mexico
The taming of the scoundrel- Italy
Mole cartoon - Czech

OP posts:
Pikachubaby · 02/12/2020 16:17

I can, but it feels like cheating

On the top of my head

Das Leben der Anderen (Germany)
Y tu mama tambien (Mexico)
Nueve Reinas (Argentina)
Intouchables (French)
All Stars (Holland)
Not one less (China)
In the mood for love (China)

These are all HIGHLY recommended, fab movies

I lived in these countries though, I speak most of the languages too (mega smug boast GrinBiscuit to myself)

So it feels like cheating

But then again, I am British... so does it count?

Do you know the above movies OP, you’ll enjoy them as they are great Smile

SebastianTheCrab · 02/12/2020 16:17

Lol @ all of the posters trying to out-pretentious each other.

I only watch American films set in high schools.

And it's "Korean" not "Corean".

DipSwimSwoosh · 02/12/2020 16:18

I can name loads. I teach languages.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 02/12/2020 16:19
@Divebar

I've seen a few of those yes Smile Imagine having your washing machine in your bog though Confused

Just felt the OP was very 'you people are so uncultured' - love that so many people have replied with so many films though. The uncultured swines of the world Wink
Except that op didn't suggest brits are uncultured swines, but that basic tv seems to lack variety... People shouldn't be taking stuff too personally when it's not meant personally.

And yeah. Imagine having a washing machine in a bathroom rather than room where you cook. The horror

Worriedandabitscared · 02/12/2020 16:19

I can name three 😂
The devils backbone
The skin I live in
Parasite

Those are the three I've personally watched but then there's Japanese horrors like the grudge and the ring but they have an American version.

Pikachubaby · 02/12/2020 16:19

Walter presents (all foreign series) Is on Channel 4

CHANNEL 4 people!!! Check it out, just watched a great Swedish series there called “The truth will out”

Pikachubaby · 02/12/2020 16:21

@SebastianTheCrab what is pretentious about foreign movies? Or do you find the particular movies listed pretentious?

I watch movies/tv for fun really

QueenBlueberries · 02/12/2020 16:21

I don't think it's pointing out anything 'uncultured', but if that's the hat fits.

It's about the fact that in many non-English countries, it's probably cheaper to show a variety of movies not from Hollywood. So it's much more frequent to show non-Hollywoody movies.

theconstantinoplegardener · 02/12/2020 16:21

Parasite - South Korea
Jamon Jamon - Spain
Run Lola Run - Germany
Amelie - France
Songs from the Second Floor - Sweden

I think maybe you need to look at your misconceptions, OP Wink

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 02/12/2020 16:23

It’s not pretentious, just like reading Russian literature (for example) isn’t pretentious. It’s just something some people do. Quite a lot of people, actually.

QueenBlueberries · 02/12/2020 16:23

It's not a misconception though . OP states that other countries show a lot more non-American and non-British movies. And it's true.

SebastianTheCrab · 02/12/2020 16:26
@SebastianTheCrab what is pretentious about foreign movies? Or do you find the particular movies listed pretentious?

Listing out the number of "foreign films" you can name is utterly pretentious. If you genuinely enjoying watching foreign films you don't usually feel the need to get on Mumsnet and prove to the world how many you can name.

The real question, OP, is how many black and white films directed by a colourblind 13-year-old savant in Swedish with Japanese subtitles can you name? I can name at least 7 inspects fingernails nonchalantly

nosswith · 02/12/2020 16:26

I have seen at least 30 foreign language films this year. So here is a selection:

Hable con ella (Spain)
Les Miserables (French)
Papicha (Algerian)
The Goalkeepers fear of the Penalty Kick (Austrian)
Parasite (Korean)

StrawberrySquash · 02/12/2020 16:30

Battle Royale
Jean de Florette
Y Tu Mama Tambien
Ciudade de Deus
Il Postino

But no, there is a massive dominance of US Hollywood films. It partly because English is such a dominent. YANBU. Its the same with books, I read the odd translation, but most of it is British or US.
I'm not much of a film watcher though.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 02/12/2020 16:30

I forgot 'Run Lola, Run!' That film is really good fun.

No one is trying to 'out-pretentious' each other; this film is about non-US/UK films and the fact that there's a thriving industry of them out there. Hollywood is not all there is. That's not to say there is anything at all wrong with Hollywood. I watch that too. In fact, I'm a massive fan of Freddy Krueger Grin

Australia also has a great film industry. I've always loved Muriel's Wedding and The Adventures of Priscilla, plus the first of the two Wolf Creek movies (I love a bit of horror but the second was too scary even for me). Those don't count as US or UK either.

OP, thanks for posting this thread. I'll be saving it and watching some of the ones I haven't seen!

Mavedrai · 02/12/2020 16:31

Operatsiya Y
Kavkazskaya plennitsa
Brilliantovaya Rukha
Sluzhebny Roman
Garazh

I'm a fan of older Russian films, so there are my five favourite foreign films. Can't say I've seen much from other countries though, so maybe I should take a look at some of the titles mentioned on this thread.

Brainwave89 · 02/12/2020 16:34

Das boot
Parasite
Belle De Jour
Au Revoir Les Enfants
Balloon
and many more. Not a film, but I would highly recommend Rita on Netflix as well. Danish series about a teacher which is excellent.

HuckfromScandal · 02/12/2020 16:36

A very long engagement
Le petite voleuse
Delicatessen
Cinema paradiso
City of god
The colours trilogy
Parasite
Amelie
La vie en rose

Off the top of my head

SchrodingersImmigrant · 02/12/2020 16:37

I forgot to put my favourites in

Morozko - USSR (Christmas wouldn't be without it)
The policemen of St Tropez - French/Italian
The creation of the world - French/Czechoslovakian (Again nice at Christmas time)
Home - French
Downfall - German/Austrian and I think Italian

HuckfromScandal · 02/12/2020 16:37

Battle royale
Old boy
The ring

nosswith · 02/12/2020 16:38

@Pikachubaby Das Leben den Anderen should have won best picture Oscar.

steppemum · 02/12/2020 16:38

@subjecttoavailability

That's a fair question, I'd say foreign film is a film produced outside of US, UK, New Zealand, Canada and Australia, so Welsh probably won't qualify but Nigerian film in English would.
Well, you have named there quite a few of the biggest film producing countries.

Given the size of Hollywood and it's influence on world film, and the fact that we share a common language, it is hardly surprising that they feature highly in what is shown is it?

generally I do not like watching anything with subtitles, as I tend to watch on TV and do somethign else eg sewing while watching. I also don't usually like dubbed films, as I get irritated by bad dubbing.

So with the odd expection, I don't watch many films not in English.

I speak 2 other languages, but all at good conversation level, which isn't quite enough to follow a film.

OP you should have put that it had to be from 5 different countries in the title as a lot of people have missed that

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 02/12/2020 16:41

Just felt the OP was very 'you people are so uncultured'
Agreed.

I couldn’t say I’ve seen any tbh. But then I have after reading PPs and I’ve watched a lot of anime (subbed because I’m the epitome of uncultured filth). I don’t really watch a lot of non-foreign movies either tbh. Last cinema release I went to was Passengers (and it wasn’t great).

I don’t think one aspect of culture like tv and movies say much about a person. I don’t watch foreign movies / tv but I do listen to a lot of foreign music (gypsy folk, polyphonic Turkish etc) which probably isn’t everyone’s thing.
