AIBU to think you can't name 5 foreign films

I have moved to the UK from another country and I have noticed that on TV they only show American and English films/shows. In my country (ex ussr) foreign films/ TV series are quite popular and often shown at prime time but seems its not the case in the UK with few exceptions like bbc4. Am I wrong? Do people watch Indian, Brazilian,
Corean films? Please vote.
AIBU- I (and most of my friends/family) can name 5 foreign films produced in 5 different countries. If so, which films are these?
YANBU - I can't name 5 foreign films.

I'll start:
Fantomas -France
Seeta and Geeta - India
Wild rose - Mexico
The taming of the scoundrel- Italy
Mole cartoon - Czech

That's quite a bleak list probably don't watch all at once Grin

DuzzyFuck · 02/12/2020 14:52

No you're right, I can't name your required five off the top of my head, just Parasite (because it's recent) and Run Lola Run because I first saw it as a teen studying media and it's stuck with me ever since.

TicTacTwo · 02/12/2020 14:53

Cinema Paradiso

DuzzyFuck · 02/12/2020 14:54

Oh hang on I can throw in Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away. My EXH was an anime fan.

MorvaanReed · 02/12/2020 14:56

Engel & Joe
Les Valouses?
Cyrano de Bergerac
Le retour de Martin Guerre
Princess Moneyoke

Apologies for spelling, but I thought looking it up would be cheating.

I'd struggle to think of many more than that.

pointythings · 02/12/2020 14:56

City of Lost Children
Every film by Studio Ghibli, but I particularly love Ponyo
Soldaat van Oranje
Le Vieux Fusil
40 qm Deutschland

There's quite a few more, but then I'm an immigrant who speaks 4 languages.

lazylinguist · 02/12/2020 14:57

I could easily, but I teach 3 foreign languages.

pointythings · 02/12/2020 14:57

Oh, I forgot 10 Jours en Or.

Purplecatshopaholic · 02/12/2020 14:58

I can, if only because my DP is a film buff (make that geek, lol), so I watch loads. In terms of recent watches, I enjoyed Parasite, also Hero and Ran. Recently also watched the Lost Bladesman which is good if you like Donny Yen (I love him!) Shoplifters is also worth a watch. I thought Ring was totally over-rated.

@steff13

Why do I have to speak for my family and friends?

The Orphanage - Spain
Ju-On - Japan
Ringu - Japan
One Missed Call - Japan
Occult - Japan

I'm in the US, so any film originating in the UK is foreign for me.

I guess I'm trying to understand if there are truly popular foreign films, as obviously some people like Fellini, Kurosava etc but would majority of people ever watch it? So the examples I've given are more pop-culture rather then cinema classics and i'd say 4 out of 5 people from my country have watch them.

teateateateateamoretea · 02/12/2020 15:02

That's a fair question, I'd say foreign film is a film produced outside of US, UK, New Zealand, Canada and Australia, so Welsh probably won't qualify but Nigerian film in English would

Intermission
The Snapper
The Van
The Commitments
Song of the Sea.

Could name many more Irish films, which are foreign according to the given definition.

Graffitiqueen · 02/12/2020 15:02

I can. Just recently in the past couple of months we've watched, parasite and sputnik. Delicatessen is one of my all time favoutire films. Others I have enjoyed are Pan's labyrinth and Spirited Away.

Dontpasstovardy · 02/12/2020 15:03

Oh and all of the Ghibli films!

Totoro
Spirited away
Howls moving castle
Princess mononoke
The cat returns
Porco rosso

ImaSababa · 02/12/2020 15:03

I have absolutely no interest in feature films.

Could do it with novels though.

DynamoKev · 02/12/2020 15:03

Dil Chanta Hai - India
The lunchbox - India
And yes I have seen all the ones I've listed (some more than once!)

Salcara · 02/12/2020 15:04

Hors de prix - French
Hunt for the Wilderpeople - New Zealand
Kobiety Mafii - Polish
The Castle - Australian classic
La Doublure - French

We would watch about 50% non US/U.K. entertainment, but I’m at least reliant on sub titles (I’m monolingual... not through lack of effort but still embarrassed) I wish subtitling was bigger (Netflix tries, but dear God some of it is bad - if you’re listening to the English dub with the English subtitles, you’d swear they’re using two different drafts of the scripts... which is why I prefer English subs over English dubs)

I prefer French, he prefers Korean or Chinese, but we will try to at least watch 20 minutes before we switch off

nemeton · 02/12/2020 15:04

Truly popular foreign films in UK:
My neighbor Totoro
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Y Tu Mama Tambien
Downfall
Jean de Florette/Manon des Sources
Ringu

Anoisagusaris · 02/12/2020 15:07

@teateateateateamoretea I was just about to post the same thing! Irish films, of which there are many, qualify based on your criteria. Or are you yet another British person who likes to claim Irish artistic or sporting achievements for Britain?

CoalTit · 02/12/2020 15:07

SuperLopez (2018)
Espérame en el cielo (1989)
Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios (1988)
La noche que mi madre mató a mi padre (2016)
Parasite (2019)
and I watch Candice Renoir five nights a week, which shows you how sad I am.

You're right about the cultural hedgemony, OP. In Spain there is so much US-made TV, It's insane. There are also Australian, French and Turkish shows, but in far smaller proportion.
Now there is a minimum of three episodes a day of "Death in Paradise", which I love to watch (despite it being so formulaic) for the non-standard (for TV) accents.
