Can't stand people referring to others as a 'Karen'

I'm fed up with seeing it, I really have. it's gone way too far now. I have a friend who is ashamed of her name and won't post on any public forum because of the stick she gets. Constantly seeing stupid memes.

You may think I'm being too serious but I think it's so derogatory to people who have that name.

Meant to write I don’t use the term Karen ...
@SheepandCow karen is not representative of an oppressed people group, far from it, or have you forgotten the "Karen people" are middle-class? The meme has little sympathy from me
Yes it is a Karen crime.....why isn't this getting the attention it deserves?

😂 Your user name suits you. You're certainly tying yourself up in knots here aren't you trying to blame all those white women for everything that's bad. You're starting to sound a little unhinged.

GoldenOmber · 02/12/2020 22:11

@KnotsLanding

My point is, why aren't people equally angry about the Priti Patel memes as they are about the Karen memes? Far worse for Priti Patel because she is real yet people are rushing to take down a fake Karen? Confused
Spitting Image isn't a 'meme', and Steve Bell cartoons aren't either. For the record I think Steve Bell is seriously unpleasant and Spitting Image was never funny in the first place, but I still think Priti Patel should lose her job - not because of 'memes' but because she broke the ministerial code. (Again.)

Yes, I'm looking forward to people explaining how this kind of thing is in fact calling out entitled, unreasonable, sometimes-often-maybe-always racist 'Karen behaviour'? And not at all people using 'Karen' to tell women to shut up.

@BeyondsConstantBangingHeadache
"Personally, given the amount of times Cooper has been referenced in this thread, I'm curious not only why Karen was chosen, but specifically why Amy wasn't?"

Not only the real name of Amy Cooper but also the real and attributed nicknames of people like "Barbecue Becky" and "Permit patty". All alliterative nicknames given very quickly to describe behaviours immediately after the event by, largely, African American people first calling out the behaviour. They caught on a bit but are nowhere near as popular as Karen. Karen isnt attached to an incident so is more malleable. But also, it predates Amy Cooper. It comes from an angry male reddit user bitching about his ex wife "Karen". It became a semi-popular misogynistic meme on there before it got adapted as an anti-racism term. However, it quickly moved back to its original mysogynistic meaning. I think this explains its popularity - it is easy to co-opt by internet users who have no interest in racial justice and every interest in shutting women up because they invented it in the first place.

Complaining about a van illegally driving onto a pavement to park there isn't unreasonable behaviour in any way.

I bet a man did the scrawling and once again, it's to shut a female poster down. How dare she have an opinion?

cologne4711 · 03/12/2020 08:36
@cologne4711 because men are allowed to be entitled. Durrr. White women should avoid having strong opinions and ideally be young and pretty. Once they are older and become unfuckable they should do the world a favour and disappear. Black women ARE sometimes allowed to be strong and express strong opinions but ONLY if they are supporting the white female protaganist in a romantic comedy. Those are the rules. Its too hard to change them so lets just have fun name calling instead.
Doh. I am so stupid. Of course, thank you for putting me straight.
