Can't stand people referring to others as a 'Karen'

I'm fed up with seeing it, I really have. it's gone way too far now. I have a friend who is ashamed of her name and won't post on any public forum because of the stick she gets. Constantly seeing stupid memes.

You may think I'm being too serious but I think it's so derogatory to people who have that name.

OP posts:
@emilyfrost Fuck off. It's my name, and the name of millions of women around the world who are facing escalating levels of harassment and bullying.

Type your own name into this website and read through all the results. karenismyname.org/renamer

Now imagine how it would feel with millions of people round the world doing that to your name, to the point where you're too scared to say anything at all.

And then STFU and fuck off.
Its my name too and i just looked at that website karenismyname.org/renamer, i am bloody fed up with it as well. Im don't look like that, I'm not like that and im pissed off with my name being used to describe a certain kind of behaviour.

Its not acceptable and its bullying

yetanothernamitynamechange · 02/12/2020 21:12

I mean, I would throw the whole lot of them out of parliament if I could.

SheepandCow · 02/12/2020 21:16

What in earth are you talking about @KnotsLanding??

I mean, I'm a bit tired, but what you're writing makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

I also think you're confusing Mumsnet with the Guardian and the Independent. That's where you'll find the most enthusiastic attacks on Priti Patel.

Lillyhoneyrose · 02/12/2020 21:17

I agree. It is bullying.

Why is it such a bad thing to call attention to someone else's being mistreated simply because others have it worse? both can be talked about.

Why should anyone be bullied?

Everyone should be treated as people. As individuals. With respect.

I don't treat my black friends any differently from my white or Asian friends. They get the same respect, the same deference.

Just treat everyone kindly.

SheepandCow · 02/12/2020 21:18

Good post @Lillyhoneyrose

Lillyhoneyrose · 02/12/2020 21:18

I am confused. I thought they wanted to throw Priti Patel out of parliament over allegations of bullying not because of her ethnicity?

Kaliorphic · 02/12/2020 21:20

I've had to use an actual woman's name because the majority on mumsnet wanted to throw Priti out of parliament and yet these same women are crying down the Karen...it makes no sense

Mumsnet isn't a hive mind you know. How do you know it's the majority. There's a vocal few. But it doesn't represent the views of everyone that's here. And Pritti doesn't get treated any differently to anyone else in politics.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 02/12/2020 21:20

Has PP. even judged more hardly because she is an Asian women

Absolutely

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 02/12/2020 21:22

The Guardian published a racist cartoon of her

One she called them out

But apparently that was ok because she is a bully

And ok because well The Guardian couldn’t possibly be racist

GoldenOmber · 02/12/2020 21:23

Priti Patel is an actual woman, who did actual things. People have criticised those things.

'the Karen' is not an actual woman, and therefore has not done actual things.

I have not criticised 'the Karen' for breaking the ministerial code. This is not because I think it's fine for Karen to break the ministerial code, but rather because Karen does not exist to break it.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 02/12/2020 21:25

I am not aware of gammon or chav being an actual person

But terms often flung around on MN to describe people

SheepandCow · 02/12/2020 21:25

@ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN

Yes I agree. She's had it from white - and black - people. Last week she condemned what she feels were personal attacks via letters from black Labour MPs.

I also suspect racism with the criticism of Rishi Sunak. His family wealth is hardly something unusual in parliament - amongst MPs from all parties, not just the Conservatives.

But all that has nothing to do with the name of an oppressed ethnic group (the Karen people). Nor has it anything to do with personal given first names.

Lillyhoneyrose · 02/12/2020 21:28

Didn't know about the cartoon. That's shocking!
GoldenOmber · 02/12/2020 21:29

Yeah that was Steve Bell, who is awful. (But I don't think is on Mumsnet.)

BeyondsConstantBangingHeadache · 02/12/2020 21:29

@Mittens030869

Is there some reason why Karen should be exempt?

The point is, WHY USE THE NAME KAREN? I wouldn't mind reading a thread about the racism experienced at the hands of white women in the US. Amy Cooper's behaviour was despicable.

But wouldn't it be better to name and shame her rather than pick a women's name at random (which is what you're basically doing)?

Personally, given the amount of times Cooper has been referenced in this thread, I'm curious not only why Karen was chosen, but specifically why Amy wasn't?

Anywho - there is already a word for the behaviour associated with the behaviour in the US, a cry-bully. If it's a specifically racist incident, then surely that would simply make them a racist cry-bully?

Kaliorphic · 02/12/2020 21:30

And ok because well The Guardian couldn’t possibly be racist

According to who? The guardian is shit.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 02/12/2020 21:34

The Guardian refused to apologise no doubt because of the support they received

Reason being PP is a bully (And a Tory bully)

Mittens030869 · 02/12/2020 21:37

@BeyondsConstantBangingHeadache Exactly, I think racists like Amy Cooper need to be named and shamed, why use another name? Her behaviour was disgraceful, why shouldn't she of any other racist exposed on social media be referred to by their own name?

SheepandCow · 02/12/2020 21:37

They didn't even apologise?
That's shocking.

KnotsLanding · 02/12/2020 21:40

My point is, why aren't people equally angry about the Priti Patel memes as they are about the Karen memes? Far worse for Priti Patel because she is real yet people are rushing to take down a fake Karen? Confused

Kaliorphic · 02/12/2020 21:41

The Guardian refused to apologise no doubt because of the support they received

What's your point here? Are you of the belief that the support of the guardian is yet another karen crime?

SheepandCow · 02/12/2020 21:42

As you can see here, people are calling out the racism directed towards Priti Patel.
KnotsLanding · 02/12/2020 21:44

@SheepandCow karen is not representative of an oppressed people group, far from it, or have you forgotten the "Karen people" are middle-class? The meme has little sympathy from me

KnotsLanding · 02/12/2020 21:45

@Kaliorphic

Yes it is a Karen crime.....why isn't this getting the attention it deserves?
ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 02/12/2020 21:45

I don’t use the Karen

I would expect The Guardian editors to know why the cartoon was offence and racist and if this was overlooked to apologise when it was pointed out by the person who it’s aimed at

Not decide for her what is and what is not offensive and/or racist
