Can't stand people referring to others as a 'Karen'

I'm fed up with seeing it, I really have. it's gone way too far now. I have a friend who is ashamed of her name and won't post on any public forum because of the stick she gets. Constantly seeing stupid memes.

You may think I'm being too serious but I think it's so derogatory to people who have that name.

Oh is it rattling posters on here because it’s a term to describe entitled white middle class women

Grin

And there hasn’t been a derogatory term used for white working class men who voted Brexit

SylvieSangFroid · 30/11/2020 22:26

Oh yes, gammons! Also baby boomers. "Ok boomer", and even the word millennial can be used as a slur.

It would be a lot better if we never used any derogatory terms to generalise about or 'other' a group of people.

Wolfiefan · 30/11/2020 22:26

I’ve not heard anyone describe a woman as a “Karen”. Unless her name was Karen and I was being introduced.
It’s not a way of describing behaviour. It’s a name.

AgrumpyKaren · 30/11/2020 22:27

I am trying to complain to a huge company over terrible customer service just now. I have every right to complain as I have been badly let down. I hate that I may be judged as unreasonable due to my name. Colleagues are amused but I find it really embarrassing.

Welcometonowhere · 30/11/2020 22:29

YANBU, it’s extremely obnoxious.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

This.

And this.

It’s everywhere at the moment.
Meepmeeep · 30/11/2020 22:31

Nigel and Norman are just 2 examples of what I perceive to be and have seen used as a male equivalent to Karen.

Welcometonowhere · 30/11/2020 22:33

You might perceive them to be, but they aren’t used in quite the same way. ‘Karen’ has really taken hold. Most unpleasant (and no, it isn’t my name.)

SylvieSangFroid · 30/11/2020 22:34

Oh yes, "he's a bit of a Nigel" has been around for decades too. There are a few.

Burnthurst187 · 30/11/2020 22:34

I only ever see it mentioned on Reddit which appears to be mainly America users. They actually have a sub forum just for videos of women shouting or losing their temper who are then called a Karen

Not sure how this Karen thing started but I don't think that many ppl in the UK are aware of it

ArranBound · 30/11/2020 22:34

YANBU at all. It is sexist, ageist and misogynistic. It is meant to put us wise, assured middle aged women back in that invisible box someone thinks we belong in. It is hatred, put simply. It's a slur.

The reason I'm so wound up about it is because it is my name. I actually quite liked my name until all this shit started happening.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 30/11/2020 22:46

SheepandCow I never said it was

But shouldn’t that apply to all other name calling on here ?

That it doesn’t but Karen does yes this is amusing

Meepmeeep · 30/11/2020 22:48

@Welcometonowhere

I perceive it to be because I’ve seen it be used in derogatory terms towards Nigel and Norman.
SheepandCow · 30/11/2020 22:49

I agree with you ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN

It's as SylvieSangFroid says. We shouldn't use any derogatory terms to generalise or other a group.

It's especially bad when the word used to insult is a name given to individuals and an ethnic group.

Imissmoominmama · 30/11/2020 22:51

It’s used by lazy people who think they’re being funny and edgy.

They’re neither.

Thickhead · 30/11/2020 22:54

Yes, I hate it. And it's one of those things that originated in the US and doesn't translate over here. It was a term used to highlight racial privilege but has become divorced from that and has just become a run-of-the-mill misogynist slur. Helen Lewis wrote a great article on it: www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2020/08/karen-meme-coronavirus/615355/

Thickhead
I suspect there's always been ageism and misogyny behind it.

It's not only a white name. Karen Alexander is a black American model. She's also a middle aged woman.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_Alexander_(fashion_model)

GlummyMcGlummerson · 30/11/2020 23:00

It's ages it's sexist bullshit. It finally gives people an excuse to attack women but under the guise of being "woke"

PenguinIce · 30/11/2020 23:05

Not sure if it is just me but I find it a bit cringy and desperate when people use the term Karen to describe someone. It screams ‘look at me using the in word’, when really the term has been used to death and most people have moved on.

kness · 30/11/2020 23:08

@emilyfrost Fuck off. It's my name, and the name of millions of women around the world who are facing escalating levels of harassment and bullying.

Type your own name into this website and read through all the results. karenismyname.org/renamer

Now imagine how it would feel with millions of people round the world doing that to your name, to the point where you're too scared to say anything at all.

And then STFU and fuck off.

Ardenon · 01/12/2020 00:10

It's a way to demean women
People throw it in to the argument to be derogative and to point out said argument is worthless because they're engaging with a woman.

Ardenon · 01/12/2020 00:12

I got infuriated the other day because my naive colleague, she's 26 repeated a conversation she'd had with her boyfriend who referred to her as a Karen because she was getting wound up. Totally shocked. Wish I'd said something now
