To be amazed they've released Mairead Philpott?

After serving half her sentence for the arson attack? Apparently even a source from the prison was a shocked at the leniency and the fact she's going to get a new identity and protection. Six children in that fire - is there such a thing as justice in this country anymore?

@Puzzledandpissedoff that was the judgement then. But I wonder how much education and training the Jude and jury members had on domestic abuse and coercion. Remember it’s only been a recognised offense for about 13 months.
Yep she probably she agree to it. Because you know, she had been groomed and conditioned so perfectly. That’s the problem with control and coercion. It’s so nuanced

GabsAlot · 29/11/2020 18:10

the ap0ologists here are astounding

like i said i dont give a shit you would take the children and go not hope that someone could rescue them

flaviaritt · 29/11/2020 18:12

Having just checked the CPS guidance, the actual ‘defence’ would be ‘duress’, and low IQ isn’t considered relevant. Everyone, no matter how stupid, is considered to be in his or her right mind unless proven otherwise. Lack of capacity is different. So being stupid in and of itself isn’t relevant.

Mick Philpott can rot. But Mairead is his victim.

This is what male violence and abuse is. This is what is does to women and children. The bloodlust on this thread is sickening.

Thelnebriati · 29/11/2020 18:14

Once someone has demonstrated they are a risk to the safety of other people, its ok to take active steps to keep other people safe.
Even if they have a low IQ.
Even if they are a victim of grooming or coercion.
Even if they are mentally unwell.

Foxinthechickencoop · 29/11/2020 18:14

And in court and in her interview she still would have been terrified of mick. He killed her kids!
Imagine if she got him in trouble and he found out. Absolutely terrifying.

Does anyone remember that rich business man and his mansion and he shot the daughters ponies and wife’s horse and the dogs and then His kids and wife and eventually himself. And the media reported it as ‘oh poor man, he must have been desperate or going bankrupt’. Nope just an abuser who’s wife was about to leave him 😕 but that story doesn’t get told does it.
He killed the horses and dogs in front of the kids, as then then kids in front of his wife. And then her. The times of death and post mortems etc confirmed this.
But yeah poor bloke he must have been desperately sad she wanted to leave, and obviously she should have protected her kids better. Yeah. So she did try and did die. Trying to leave .

It’s chilling how little understanding there is about coercive control and domestic abuse. And I suppose how do people understand when it’s everywhere and half normalised . I really understand why people think the way the do about maraid.

flaviaritt · 29/11/2020 18:15

This is what male violence and abuse is. This is what is does to women and children

Oh that is rubbish. This is an incredibly shocking case precisely because most parents would die for their kids, violence or otherwise.

itsgettingweird · 29/11/2020 18:15

@7Days

Imagine having to live in her head though.
What before she burnt her kids alive and felt it was a great idea for a bigger council house or afterwards when she realised she'd murdered them and had actually meant to?

That's the problem here really. She should be in prison for a longer sentence because she's evil or in hospital because she's mentally unwell.

What she did means she's literally one of those things. She shouldn't be a free woman.

This is Mick Philpot and his track record with women (from Wikipedia):

Relationships and habitual violence[edit]
Mick Philpott's attitude to women has been described as "controlling", "domineering", "violent" and "manipulative".[5][6][7] In July 1978, aged 21, Philpott attempted to murder Kim Hill, his girlfriend of two years; their relationship began when she was aged 15. He had previously shot Hill in the groin with a crossbow because he felt her dress had been too short, and had cracked her kneecap with a hammer when she paid too much attention to a baby she had been minding. Philpott attempted to kill Hill by stabbing her over a dozen times as she was lying in bed, because she sent him a letter saying she was leaving him.[8] He also stabbed Hill's mother when she came to her daughter's aid. Hill suffered collapsed lungs and a punctured bladder, kidney and liver. Philpott was convicted of attempted murder of Hill, and grievous bodily harm with intent against her mother,[9] and was sentenced to seven years in prison in December 1978.[10] Philpott was released after three years and two months.[11]

Philpott married Pamela Lomax in 1986.[12] He had three children with Lomax, two sons and a daughter. Lomax said that Philpott was controlling, and she prayed he would move on to someone else. Her wish was fulfilled when Philpott met Heather Kehoe, then aged 14, in Rainworth, Nottinghamshire; Philpott was 37. On her 16th birthday, Kehoe ran away from her parents to live with Philpott. She gave birth to two children, both boys, in quick succession, but Philpott beat Kehoe because he wanted a daughter. Kehoe described Philpott teaching his older sons to be violent towards her. Philpott wanted Kehoe to produce more children, but she did not conceive again. In 1991, he was given a two-year conditional discharge for assault occasioning actual bodily harm after headbutting a colleague.[9]

In 2000, Philpott met Mairead Duffy, a 19-year-old single mother born in England to an Irish family, who had left a previous volatile relationship.[13] Duffy moved into Philpott's house shortly after, and the couple married in May 2003.[14] In 2001, Philpott met Lisa Willis, a 16-year-old orphan and single mother, who became his mistress.[15][16][17] Philpott invited Willis to move into his council house, which was larger than hers, in 2002. Willis served as bridesmaid at Philpott and Duffy's wedding. On 23 December 2002, having left Philpott, Kehoe gained legal custody of her two children. In 2010, Philpott was given a police caution for slapping Mairead and dragging her outside by her hair.[18][19]

Fromthetopmakeitdrop · 29/11/2020 18:17

@GabsAlot .. yes with your normal IQ - why would she think they wouldn't be rescued if that's what he told her? That's the difference. You know the whole idea is outrageous. My 7yo knows you shouldn't set a house on fire- if I told her it was going to be okay and I could save all of her toys then we would get lots of money she would agree. Because she trusts me to make the decisions - I assume the set up was the same in this relationship. I see no difference in her being imprisoned or living under a new identity. She is alone in the world now and I would be surprised if she ever manages to make any sort of a life for herself. What she did is disgusting and horrific beyond belief but do I think she is a cold blooded killer who decided to get rid of all her children? No, absolutely not. We can't keep people who are of low risk to others in prison for their whole lives. It's not feasible and it benefits no-one.

This.

This is what make violence does to society and why violent men, and the acceptance of toxic masculinity, turns society against people (male and female) who are subjected to such.

The 'hang 'em and flog 'em' crowd on this thread, baying for this woman's blood, make me feel physically ill.

suzy2b · 29/11/2020 18:17

When Mick Phillpots was pretending to cry so was she i saw no tears rolling down her face she should have had a sentence for every child

4cats2kids · 29/11/2020 18:18

She didn’t instigate this crime, and she was likely abused and manipulated by the one who did. She was vulnerable and probably poses no danger to the public.

I doubt she intended the outcome, and has suffered the loss of her own children.

There’s justice in this country.

sofiaaaaaa · 29/11/2020 18:18

Covering up for him is equally as unforgivable though, no?

Morally perhaps but not in the eyes of the law

LadyJaye · 29/11/2020 18:18

Male violence, not 'make'.

Oh, for an edit button.

TheTrashBagIsOursCmonTrashBag · 29/11/2020 18:19

She had choices and she chose badly and because of that (and her awful, abusive husband and his mate) all her children died horribly. Mick Philpott has a long history of domestic violence. He was convicted of attempted murder, sentenced to something like 8 years (I think?) and served only 3 after he stabbed his teenage girlfriend and her mother multiple times. When his mistress left him, she had to sneak out the house by telling him she was taking her children swimming and then simply not going home ever again. She made her very brave choice to get her and her children away from him. Maireid didn’t. She agreed he should set fire to the fucking house with all the kids inside in a reckless plan to apparently get a bigger house and frame the ex mistress to get custody of her children. Absolutely insane. I’ve been an abused woman when in a past relationship. I still can’t get my head round her agreeing for her husband to do what he did.

itsgettingweird · 29/11/2020 18:20

@Besswess88

She was in an abusive relationship and she has low IQ.

Not defending her actions but...

If you have intelligence enough to mother 6 children .....

The low it is a red herring. She had enough cognitive ability to plan in advance - both the fire and what she'd say to the police etc. She had enough cognitive ability to do this daily in raising children etc.

Anyone with such a low IQ or cognitive ability within executive function to not understand cause and effect is too disabled to manage biologically mothering children and raising them.

GroundAlmonds · 29/11/2020 18:22

@MarthaWashingtonsFeralTomcat

Mick Philpott orchestrated the whole thing. Mairead was in my opinion abused and worn down over years and years to accept what he said and did and told her to say and do. Many many women sadly do the same, and while she should take some personal responsibility too, mental and emotional abuse is a funny thing. If anyone saw them on the Jeremy Kyle show a few years before the fire, that much was obvious. She lauded him like a king, and had probably never had many positive male role models to compare him too sadly.

I don't think she'd be wise to ever, ever think about going within 20 miles of Derby though. From what I hear, emotions are still really strong locally.

This. So much dysfunction. So much polyamory. He very much seemed to rule the roost. Mairead didn’t seem to have much volition in any of it. I can well. Relieve she didn’t have the intellect to predict the inevitable consequences of his crackpot plan.

Btw I’m not arguing about her release from prison, I don’t really object to that really. I’m more focussed on Mick Philpott never getting released. I hope the support MP is given includes intense therapy of some kind to prevent her ever ending up in a relationship with an abusive man ever again. Even if she does get pregnant at some point in the future she won’t be allowed to keep the child with her, they’d definitely be taken and adopted as they should do.

MarylinMonrue · 29/11/2020 18:23

To be clear, I think Mick Philpott needs to die behind bars and should have been put behind them for the rest of his natural life the first time he horrifically assaulted a girlfriend. I guess I just can't picture on any level agreeing to set fire to the house with your kids in it. For anything.

Apparently she was delighted to get out early. Getting a new identity is totally wrong. Too many criminals are getting this privilege.

6 kids burning to death because their mother didn’t say no, we’re not setting fire to the house with them in it, and people defending that ‘mother’, makes me physically ill.

Thanks for posting this evidence of Philpott's horrific record of DV.

For all posters saying that the courts should have locked Mairead up for life - do you not think that is was evident, from very early on, that Philpott was a clear danger to women and should have been removed from society at a much earlier stage?
