To be amazed they've released Mairead Philpott?

After serving half her sentence for the arson attack? Apparently even a source from the prison was a shocked at the leniency and the fact she's going to get a new identity and protection. Six children in that fire - is there such a thing as justice in this country anymore?

@flaviaritt

* Why do people keep saying this. So what. She will have known right from wrong and more importantly that her dc were at great risk. Why do some women put a man before their kids.*

I agree with this. “She’s a bit thick” isn’t a defence. And her appeal saying she was under his control failed.

The fact that 'she was a bit thick' is a major factor. It means her ability to make decisions/judgements are not always the right ones.
DK123 · 29/11/2020 17:38

I saw the article and was also shocked she's already being released

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 29/11/2020 17:38

She hasn't 'lost all her children'.

She was complicit in the premeditated murder of her children and the attempted cover up afterwards.

Please do not put her in the same category as other bereaved parents.

Supersimkin2 · 29/11/2020 17:38

I'm not sure playing the victim card works when you've murdered six children. She's bloody dangerous, SN or not.

ViciousJackdaw · 29/11/2020 17:38

Bring back hanging for child murderers

This is why we don't bring emotion into law. What makes one life worth more than another?

lovelovelove2020 · 29/11/2020 17:39

@flaviaritt

She did not plan to kill her kids. It was an awful plan thought out by Mick. She did not have much of a choice but to go through with it.

The police, CPS and jury thought otherwise, didn’t they? ‘Not much of a choice’ means someone is forcing you, not pressuring you.

What do you think would have happened to her if she hadn't agreed with it? Or dared to stand up to Mick? Have you seen what he had done to his ex partners?
Rockmehardplace · 29/11/2020 17:39

The case was awful and utterly tragic but I’ve voted YABU. She blatantly has a very low IQ and was utterly incapable of thinking for herself, given what she had put up with for years with that thing she was married to.

She has to live without the only 6 people who would ever have loved her. I hope she knows what she has done and suffers mentally every day for it, but I don’t think she needs to be in jail for that.

As for him tho-just throw away the key,

flaviaritt · 29/11/2020 17:39

So only clever people can be expected not to kill children?

LadyJaye · 29/11/2020 17:40

@YuletidePizza

Yanbu. She should never be allowed out and nor should he. Bring back hanging for child murderers, no amount of abuse or coercion justifies covering up the murder of your children. RIP kids.
We don't murder people. That's what makes us, as a society, better than murderers.

I am thankful that I live in a country that has outlawed the death penalty.

myhobbyisouting · 29/11/2020 17:40

"She did not have much of a choice but to go through with it."

Of course she did.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 29/11/2020 17:40

Will her life be much better if any better on the outside. A new identity which no doubt she's been given is one thing. However she'll still be recognisable or is The Payer having to fork out for plastic surgery, too.

papaelf · 29/11/2020 17:41

She hasn't 'lost all her children'.

How has she not?

flaviaritt · 29/11/2020 17:41

Because she let them die horrifying, violent, terrifying deaths. She let that happen. Unless she was physically coerced or completely out of her tree, she is to blame for her own actions.

I don’t know exactly what those actions were so will not comment on the exact length of her sentence. But whatever she did, a low IQ isn’t an excuse.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/11/2020 17:42

I seem to remember Paul Mosley also got 17 years so will no doubt be out soon too
Mairead will probably get together with him - or even back with Mick once he's also released - and have yet more children. After all she's only 39 so it's not impossible

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 29/11/2020 17:42

How has she not?

As explained in the rest of my post Confused

flaviaritt · 29/11/2020 17:42

I don’t know. But her appeal on that basis was dismissed. The defence of coercion requires a high bar and rightly so.

papaelf · 29/11/2020 17:42

What do you think would have happened to her if she hadn't agreed with it? Or dared to stand up to Mick? Have you seen what he had done to his ex partners?

I don't know but I tell you this I would fucking die whilst trying to protect my children.

ViciousJackdaw · 29/11/2020 17:43

So only clever people can be expected not to kill children?

No. But those with lower or impaired cognitive ability may be more susceptible to coercion. They may not be able to make informed decisions either.

ilovesooty · 29/11/2020 17:43

@MarthaWashingtonsFeralTomcat

Yes it is. I dont care how 'worn down' she was.

I don't think she was 'worn down'. I think she was abused and groomed.

I think so too. I also agree that she would be foolish to return to Derby and she will find it very difficult to live on the outside. I imagine she will need a lot of multiagency support during her licence period.
Awwlookatmybabyspider · 29/11/2020 17:43

@lovelovelove2020. I wouldn't give a golden turd what happened to me. Its a mother duty to protect her children. Its quite concerning the amount of people who seem to have sympathy for her.

papaelf · 29/11/2020 17:43

@DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult

Sorry I misread.

flaviaritt · 29/11/2020 17:44

No. But those with lower or impaired cognitive ability may be more susceptible to coercion.

But again, that appeal failed because it wasn’t considered that she was coerced.

maureenfrombarnsley · 29/11/2020 17:46

YANBU, OP. It's a disgusting decision.

TrialOfStyle · 29/11/2020 17:47

Taking all emotion out of it, what is the benefit of her being in prison? Presumably the fact that she is being released means she’s no longer deemed a danger to society.

And I would imagine that the reality is that her life isn’t going to be any better on the outside - if she’s recognised (and it will only likely be a matter of time) it’s going to be much worse.

BoreOfWhabylon · 29/11/2020 17:48

She's variously described in the press as 38 or 39.

She'll be pregnant within the year. It's all she knows.
