AIBU to spend £40 on take away?

I fancy Chinese takeaway...

DH hates Chinese takeaway, prefers Indian, and so if we had takeaway we’d end up ordering from 2 places. But this means it would cost nearly £40 which seems excessive for takeaway? It would be closer to £30 if we both ordered from the same place with discounts/less delivery fee but then that means I’d have to have Indians not Chinese.

@Marmite27

Were poor so I had to make ours (not really, but that’s what I tell the kids Grin).

Honey garlic chicken, teriyaki veg and ‘unfried’ rice. Bloody lovely even if the kitchen looks like a bombs hit it Hmm

That looks delicious!

Do it!

SimonJT · 28/11/2020 17:44

@Proudboomer It will be yummy, our favourite place is shut, but this is a close second and has a very similar menu.

FestiveChristmasLights · 28/11/2020 17:46

@ExpensivelyDecorated

We do this but never have it delivered so save money that way, DH goes out and picks up.
This is what we do.
BestOption · 28/11/2020 17:47

@SimonJT

£40 is pretty reasonable, we often pay more than that despite ordering from the same place. I can’t be bothered to cook tonight so we have almost £60 of takeout on the way for two adults and a small child.
Good on you 👍🏻Hope you 3 all enjoy it!

But unfortunately, not everyone earns what you do. £40 is a lot for most people.

I eat low carb for diabetes so takeaway is very much a thing of the past & I live alone, but would have spent £30 on Chinese/Indian, but had it for 2 nights.

@Nobeautysleep. If you can afford it, order what you each want but as others have said. Send DH to collect both if they're local & save on the delivery. Or order through just eats/deliveroo depending on the cost.

Please enjoy it for me!!

listsandbudgets · 28/11/2020 17:49

YABU... utterly unreasonable. You know that mumsnet chicken you've been working your way through for the last month - well there should be plenty over to make him a chicken curry and yourself chicken chow mein and then put the bones in to start a rich stock for tomorrows sunday soup - then you can put the £40 in savings in case of emergencies / the cat eating next weeks chicken...

Alternatively you could just get two takeaways and enjoy every morsel. Who wants to compromise and end up with one of you not enjoying it anyway. :)

Proudboomer · 28/11/2020 17:51

My local curry house and Chinese will deliver for free as you place a minimum order of which both are under £20.
Rarely will my order be under and if it is I just order an extra dish I can eat the next day or freeze for during the week.

ShirleyPhallus · 28/11/2020 17:54

@BarbaraofSeville

Bloody hell, some of your takeaways are expensive.

Chinese here for two people with leftovers for lunch is about £18. Indian would be about £22.

£18 for two adults and leftovers for lunch??

That must be 1-2 meat dishes with one side and some prawn crackers.

This is extremely unreasonable.

YellowEllis · 28/11/2020 17:54

We spend over £40 on takeaway from the same space, for two of us Blush

GameSetMatch · 28/11/2020 17:55

We spent that on takeaway last night, we always over order so we can have some the next day for Dinner. Go for it! It’s been a crappy year and anything that will cheer you up is good money well spent!

Proudboomer · 28/11/2020 17:55

The only part of your delivery that I am not sure of is the açai bowls. That much fruit on top of all those veggies would mean I would be spending a lot of personal time in the loo the next day.

Feministicon · 28/11/2020 17:57

Chinese is my favourite, we got one last weekend that was nearly £40 for the two of us as the kids hate it. We must be pigs

Lovemusic33 · 28/11/2020 17:58

If you can afford it then it’s fine, if not then toss a coin for Indian or Chinese and dh will just have to lump it if you win 🤣

Movinghouseatlast · 28/11/2020 18:00

I spent £75 on a takeaway last weekend.

It was lobster, crab and langoustines with bouillabaisse, bread and a bottle of wine.

Fuck it, I thought.

It was fabulous! And did us 2 dinners and a lunch in the end, so a bargain!!!

jessstan1 · 28/11/2020 18:00

Do it. Why not if you can afford it? Husband and I did the same occasionally. You can always have the leftovers for breakfast tomorrow :-).

Pikachubaby · 28/11/2020 18:01

This thread makes me happy

I spent £38 on a Chinese takeaway yesterday for 4 (2 adults and 2 hungry hippo teens) and felt that was extravagant

Now I can feel frugal instead Grin

Sounds lush, where from?
SimonJT · 28/11/2020 18:04

@Proudboomer We’re almost vegans (we eat egg), so our diet is largely plant based, so not an excessive amount of fruit/veg for us. There will be some cracking farts later though.

Marmite27 · 28/11/2020 18:05

We order all the carbs if we’re having a Chinese.

Chicken fried rice, salt and pepper shredded chicken, chips, soft noodles, gravy sauce, prawn toast and prawn crackers. It’s known as an ‘our house number’ usual.

We had it for dinner the night I got pregnant with my eldest, and it was all I wanted to eat for the next 9 months. We don’t order twice a week anymore, but they always enquire after the ‘baby’ when I phone.

10 years ago when we moved in it was £12.40. It’s now £18.60.

Prices vary widely and depends if you've ordered sides etc or cheaper rice.
Labobo · 28/11/2020 18:05

Think of it this way: if you went out to a restaurant, £40 would be a very cheap bill. But you can't because of lockdown. Have what you like, there are few enough joys at the moment.

IEat · 28/11/2020 18:05

Do what makes you 2 happy

Labobo · 28/11/2020 18:06

Now I want salt and pepper ribs and crispy duck pancakes and broccoli in garlic sauce.

BarbaraofSeville · 28/11/2020 18:07

^£18 for two adults and leftovers for lunch??

Er no, king prawn curry, massive pot of special chow mein, chips, fried rice, two huge pancake rolls and prawn crackers.

A main is £5-6 including rice or chips, sides are a couple of quid each and the prawn crackers are free if you spend over £15.

Daisy829 · 28/11/2020 18:07

Absolutely do it. I’m just debating pizza/kebab with dh or Chinese. Kids are already on McDonald’s. Potentially 3 types of takeaway!
