AIBU to spend £40 on take away?

I fancy Chinese takeaway...

DH hates Chinese takeaway, prefers Indian, and so if we had takeaway we’d end up ordering from 2 places. But this means it would cost nearly £40 which seems excessive for takeaway? It would be closer to £30 if we both ordered from the same place with discounts/less delivery fee but then that means I’d have to have Indians not Chinese.

Can you afford it?

lockeddownandcrazy · 28/11/2020 17:05

Do it, just have a takeaway slightly less often.

Newuser991 · 28/11/2020 17:05

Why do adults need justification to spend £10?

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 28/11/2020 17:05

If you can afford it why the heck not?! It’s all shit and miserable right now so why not treat yourself a little?

Plus you’d be supporting two local businesses.

Sirzy · 28/11/2020 17:07

If you can afford it do it.

Is picking them up a possibility to save on delivery fees?

Dahlietta · 28/11/2020 17:08

YANBU for spending £40 on takeaway, but YABU for preferring Chinese to Indian Wink

EhWhatPardon · 28/11/2020 17:10

Dh has just mentioned Chinese food and I've already spent the day memorising my order for the Indian takeaway...the DS has mentioned kebab...now I'm stuck 😂

SimonJT · 28/11/2020 17:11

£40 is pretty reasonable, we often pay more than that despite ordering from the same place. I can’t be bothered to cook tonight so we have almost £60 of takeout on the way for two adults and a small child.

Smallsteps88 · 28/11/2020 17:13

@SimonJT what’s in your order?

Nobeautysleep · 28/11/2020 17:13

Crispy shredded beef in chilli sauce 😋 is en route

And a vindaloo for DH.

Saturday night of dreams ☺️

Yesterday we ordered DS an individual pizza from Pizza Hut and then we ordered Indian to arrive later for us. Cost about a fiver more than if we’d ordered food we all like from the Chinese, and felt very decadent Grin

sofiaaaaaa · 28/11/2020 17:14

As a one off, just do it. It will probably be enough of a faff that neither of you will want to do it again😂

I am known for wasting money on deliveroo and this is something that I would probably do, but I agree that £40 seems high! Is there a minimum order value? That’s around £15 each assuming the rest is spent on delivery/service fees.

katy1213 · 28/11/2020 17:15

Eat In to Help Out.

Dahlietta · 28/11/2020 17:15

I'll let you off, OP, crispy shredded beef in chilli sauce is awesome.

alliejay81 · 28/11/2020 17:15

DH and I almost always order from the same place so we can eat together. I often order DS food from somewhere else as he always fancies a burger!

BarbaraofSeville · 28/11/2020 17:16

Bloody hell, some of your takeaways are expensive.

Chinese here for two people with leftovers for lunch is about £18. Indian would be about £22.

RayOfSunshine2013 · 28/11/2020 17:16

Do it!

SilenceOfThePrams · 28/11/2020 17:16

Hope you aren’t unreasonable because I’ve just done the same!

No point wasting money on food you don’t really want to eat. Better to spend a little more on the meal you actually do want.

Be different if you could take it turn and turn about but doesn’t sound like that’s an option.

Rephrase it - it isn’t you spending an extra tenner by not eating Indian, it’s your husband spending it by not eating Chinese! Or it’s £5 each which is 2 coffees later on in the month.

BecomeStronger · 28/11/2020 17:16

It depends on a few things:

 • how much £10 is to you
 • what you'd do with the £10 if it wasn't takeaway
 • whether there'll be increased food waste
 • whether it will make you cross/spoil your evening if they arrive an hour apart!

However, for most spending atm I am "justifying" it with a mixture of "it's creating jobs/supporting a local business" and "usually we'd be going out this weekend" Grin

paganbilly · 28/11/2020 17:17

you should have bought an Aldi chicken and then used the leftovers to make a curry and a chinese meal.

Mustbe3ormorecharacters · 28/11/2020 17:17

We normally spend more than that for 2, if you can afford it why not?

Proudboomer · 28/11/2020 17:18

I order a home delivery most weekends. Last week it was Chinese so this week it is Indian. Chinese week comes to around £30 and Indian less at £20. Indian is always less as I only eat vegetarian when having Indian but Chinese I have ribs and other meat dishes.

fullofhope100 · 28/11/2020 17:18

@ShirleyPhallus

Well you’ll get 2 sets of replies: “That’s my entire food budget for the year, YABU” “I wipe my arse on £20 notes, that’s pennies, what are you even posting for?”

So it really depends on if you can afford it and no one here can tell you Smile

We do this but never have it delivered so save money that way, DH goes out and picks up.

SimonJT · 28/11/2020 17:19
@SimonJT what’s in your order?
One yukatan street bowl
One patacones bowl
Avocado taco
Jackfruit taco
Aubergine fritters
Kimchi fries
Three acai bowls

It would have been more but I have a £15 giftcard
