MIL & the nursery rug

Sunshine1996 · 28/11/2020 15:15

I know I’m going to sound like a completely ungrateful bitch but MIL has bought a rug for the nursery and it is not to my taste at all. I adore my MIL, it is her first grandchild and she is so excited which is lovely. It’s not even something I could stash away as she comes round often. I realise this isn’t really a huge problem but I’m 36 weeks pregnant and very hormonal 😂 it clashes completely with her room, just a rant really.

Could you say that you already had a rug which you loved and you're very sorry but could she take hers back and maybe make a suggestion of something she could buy? Mobile for the cot or something similar?

NiceandCalm · 28/11/2020 19:05

Not sure if anyone has mentioned the price - £16.99 - so don't feel bad about a little spillage or simply say that you tripped over it a couple of times so have put it away for now.

lemonsquashie · 28/11/2020 19:12

It's hard but you have to be honest if you don't like stuff they give you. They'll keep doing it otherwise

yikesanotherbooboo · 28/11/2020 19:15

I don't understand why anyone would be annoyed that their mil has bought a present for the new GC unless it is part of a long history of controlling behaviour. Personally, even though , like others, I wouldn't have chosen it I would want to please her , to show gratitude and to acknowledge her excitement about the baby so I would put up with it. I am a bit of a pushover though.

Lillygolightly · 28/11/2020 19:17

Maybe your waters could break on the rug??

mopphead · 28/11/2020 19:17

Get DH to thank her but tell her that it doesn't go with nursery. Suggest it stay at hers for when baby is over (my PILs and parents both bought a rug for our baby to play on that stays at theirs and gets rolled out when we visit). If you don't, she'll keep buying you things you hate. At least she ll check next time if you say.

Crazycrazylady · 28/11/2020 19:25

I'd just explain that the baby projectile vomited all over it and you just failed to get the smell of sour milk out😩

Nat3kids · 28/11/2020 19:40

I’m not sure how realistic some of the suggested excuses are - do people really replace rugs every time there is puke, poo, wee, etc on them when they have little ones? We just dab ours clean and carry on Grin

GalaxyCookieCrumble · 28/11/2020 19:50

The rug is perfect for little ones when they are playing/crawlingz

CommanderBurnham · 28/11/2020 21:06

The kindest thing to do is roll it up and put it away.

When baby is older, you can either use it as an outdoor rug or something, or even take it over to your MIL's house.

Use it a few times and then pass it on.

Newfornow · 28/11/2020 21:10

Jeez what miserable gits on here. She did something nice. How very dare she.

MushMonster · 28/11/2020 21:32

And they have looked for the price too!

ThatDamnScientist · 28/11/2020 21:57

@NiceandCalm

Yeah, £16.99, for some people that is quite a chunk. There are some god-awful, ungrateful people about.
SentientAndCognisant · 28/11/2020 22:01

Yes it’s been priced and linked to the retail store. All quite vulgar and ungrateful

Igotmyholiday · 28/11/2020 22:11

OK the rug is a bit twee but really it's not that bad and she did a nice thing. People on here seem to forget that Mils are their dp's dm's. What does the dp think? its his home and dc too

Boostinthefanjo · 28/11/2020 22:15

There really are some nasty people on here. Some of the responses are awful.

We received loads of stuff from family and friends that wasn't to our taste when our little boy was born, but we appreciated it because it was thoughtful and kindly meant. And we didn't go digging for price tags either... or posting pics of the gifts on public fora for people to snark at. I don't like slogans on decor either, but the thought of deliberately wiping a shitty nappy on a gift a grandparent has given to her first grandchild, a gift which features words about how loved that child is... christ!!

If it bothers you that much just roll it up when not in use. Or if you really hate it and don't mind coming off as precious and snotty then ask her to exchange it. It's not rocket science. Just basic manners.

StripeyDeckchair · 28/11/2020 22:15

Babies puke and shit a lot
Considering their size they produce a disproportionate amount of puke & shit
It goes everywhere

Just sayin'

Cherrysoup · 28/11/2020 22:32

Think yourself lucky. While DH and I were on honeymoon, my MIL kindly decided to redorate MY kitchen in MY new house, as a wedding present. I hated it but had to live with it for a few years until we coul legitimately redecorate

Why did you wait? I would have gone ballistic! You could easily have said ‘We already have the paint/tiles for the kitchen and can’t return them’. I could not have put up with someone doing that, it’s batshit!

Re the rug, get your DH to tell her (in the kindest possible way) that you have fixed ideas/colour schemes/whatever. Don’t say you’re feeling ocd because of pregnancy hormones Confused that’s so bullshit. Just make it clear that you’ll be buying the stuff for your nursery/house/baby.

Maybe tell her something you want if she is being kind enough to buy you things. I couldn’t tolerate someone else’s taste in my house. I don’t think that’s terrible of me. I have, like most people, very particular tastes. That does not make me a bad person, but I would not keep the overly sentimental gifts I’ve had over the years. I even get fussy about what my sharer wants to buy for my horse! I don’t think she should spend money on him, that’s for me to do, she should just enjoy him and her taste is different to mine.

Bellendejour · 28/11/2020 23:10

Who designs this shit?

I would normally just stash in the attic/cupboard but think in this case it’s a thanks, but not to our taste situation.

Or just say you’ve already ordered one.

hf2345 · 28/11/2020 23:13

Just put it down every time she comes round ? Then roll up an put away when she’s gone ?

hf2345 · 28/11/2020 23:15

I feel sorry for her ... not my taste either but it looks really sweet

Clawdy · 28/11/2020 23:16

@Newfornow

Exactly.
victoriaspongecake · 28/11/2020 23:18

Goodness me you are ungrateful. Be glad you have a mil that is interested

SimplyRadishing · 28/11/2020 23:21

You have my sympathies it is god awful

If you must keep it then its got a max lofe of 3 years before you can get rid so that's something

Perhaps you could "layer" the rugs and put a giant sheepskin over it thus covering the majority of the Live! Love! Laugh! Horrorshow

grassisjeweled · 28/11/2020 23:23

God it's not that bad. Very unappreciative
