Am I being over the top?

I've just walked out off work because they keep leaving me on the front door for hours and no one wants to swap. I was absolutely freezing manager said i can't just leave as they can't afford for me to leave.

I've just cried all the way home it sounds stupid but I've just had enough

They’ll probably fire you.

MrsAIBU · 28/11/2020 10:13

Today was my last day anyway

I'm assuming you work in a supermarket / shop. Who tells you to stay outside on the door, and what's your usual role? If your manager then have you had a chat with them about rotating who is on the door?

Walking out wasn't a very sensible decision, but we all do rash and impulsive things from time to time, especially when angry or upset. Could you go back and apologise for leaving, but reiterate why you reacted that way.

AaronPurr · 28/11/2020 10:21

Cross posted with your update. If today was your last day then surely wondering if your actions were over the top is a moot point?

40weekswithno2 · 28/11/2020 10:27

I wouldn't have walked out. Is there a uniform they insist you wear or can you wear lots of warm clothes?
If they insist you're wearing a uniform and it's not warm enough then you have cause for complaint.

MrsAIBU · 28/11/2020 10:30

We're supposed to swap and take it in turns with other things around the store but no one wanted to swap.

Their is a coat to wear but doesn't really keep you warm at all.

OP posts:
Mycircusmymonkey · 28/11/2020 10:31

Don’t blame you. Should matter if no one wants to swap the manager should be making sure there’s a rota.

Mycircusmymonkey · 28/11/2020 10:31

Shouldn’t

nicky7654 · 28/11/2020 10:35

Congratulations on walking away. Good luck with your future 😊

brawse · 28/11/2020 10:36

I probably would have gone to a manager, HR or someone senior before walking off without saying anything. Is this your only job?

40weekswithno2 · 28/11/2020 10:39

Did you speak to your manager about swapping with someone? They should really have organised a rota to make it fair

Newfornow · 28/11/2020 10:46

No one swapped because it is your last day and they have no fucks to give about you and how cold it is.
I’m meh 😑 about whether it was wise or not. It makes little difference really.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 28/11/2020 11:03

Surely the worst they can do is withhold a few hours’ pay?

MrsAIBU · 28/11/2020 11:10

I spoke to the shift manager she said your on the door for four hours ask someone if they want to swap. Everyone said no so I spoke to my manager she said go on a checkout. Baring in mind I haven't been on a checkout since I had till training.

I've been home now an hour and I'm still freezing I've spoke to HR about making a complaint.

OP posts:
40weekswithno2 · 28/11/2020 11:12

So your manager gave you another duty to do?
It sounds badly organised but I don't think there's any point in complaining on your last day especially after you were given a different duty to do.
I'd just chalk it up to experience and move on.

AaronPurr · 28/11/2020 11:41

Why are you making a complaint? Your manager gave you a different role and today was your last day. Confused

WorraLiberty · 28/11/2020 11:44

Given it was your last day, I would've stuck it out for the sake of a reference.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 28/11/2020 11:44

So your manager did give you a different role? I don't understand what you're complaining about then.

brawse · 28/11/2020 11:46

Was it your last day at work or just the last day on being at the door, OP?

Smallsteps88 · 28/11/2020 11:49

If it was your last day why do you care? Don’t give it a second thought. Just focus now on getting ready for your new job.

MrsAIBU · 28/11/2020 12:11

She gave me a different role but I've never been on the tills before I didn't even have my login for the tills. Because when I started and done till training I was using someone else login.

I'm making a complaint because since I've started their I've told her I really struggle with cold. And every single shift they have singled me out and put me on the front doors every single time it's not fair. They make sure they give all their favourites the decent jobs.

OP posts:
ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule · 28/11/2020 12:14

I don't think it matters now. You don't work there anymore, you're making a complaint - get yourself under a blanket, get warm and don't give it another thought now it's over and done with.

MrsAIBU · 28/11/2020 12:16

They claim to be such a diverse company but I'm the only person of colour within the whole store.

@ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule thanks I know I don't know why it's bothering me so much.

I have a level 5 qualification in HR it is worthy of a complaint.

You were told to go on check out? I’m not sure you have a leg to stand on.

Yea op you were OTT.

And what did she say when you explained that?
