I've just walked out off work because they keep leaving me on the front door for hours and no one wants to swap. I was absolutely freezing manager said i can't just leave as they can't afford for me to leave.

I've just cried all the way home it sounds stupid but I've just had enough

I don’t see the point to this post.
You know that the reason you walked out today, was because you felt you could, with no repercussions.
Whether it was reasonable to do so... only you know the history of your employment there.
It’s pointless posting because you only want people to agree with you. But you’ll find that actually people tend to probe and think before replying.

I think you were treated fine - when you work in a supermarket sometimes you have to do roles you don’t particularly like 🤷‍♀️

From reading your updates, it sounds like you’re trying to find something to complain about and some reason that they were unreasonable (bringing race into it for instance) when really it sounds fine and like you were given the opportunity to move to another role when you were cold.

CheltenhamLady · 28/11/2020 13:05

If you were offered another role I am not sure why you walked out. You should have found another manager and explained that you didn't have a log on. I think you were just looking for an excuse to leave early.

WorraLiberty · 28/11/2020 13:06

@MrsAIBU

No I sat down on the checkout but I obviously didn't have a login. So when I went to find her she was already gone.

I haven't behaved unreasonably at all I was upset and I was getting emotional because no one wanted to take me off baring in my I have considered these people friends no one wanted to stand in the cold. I didn't have a login for the checkout.

I'm also a little bit confused about her having been 'already gone' when you went to find her because you also said...

I was absolutely freezing manager said i can't just leave as they can't afford for me to leave.

Have I read it wrong or are you saying that you manged to find her in the end and instead of telling her you don't have a till login, you told her you were leaving?

Duemarch2021 · 28/11/2020 13:19

Sorry im a bit confused, the post is a bit drip feedy... u say it was your last day anyway but they cant afford for you to just leave? Why was it your last day.. was it planned? as in.. last day of notice or you walked out and quit spontaneously?

If you were that miserable then good for you for walking out.. fuck them! But on other hand i hope you are able to find something else soon x

This post is bizarre. Other than having to stand on the door, what was your role prior to that in the supermarket? Surely they didn't hire you on the premise if you basically being security. There must have been something you were initially trained to do - shelf stacking, merchandising, stock control, till work - that you could have done instead of freezing on the door? You mentioned going on a checkout but not having a log in, could you not have motioned for a check out/customer service leader to sort that for you? All it takes is a quick wave or a shout to get them over and they will normally sort you out. Most stores have temp log ins for situations like this. To have stormed out of work (last day or not!) instead of doing the grown up thing and fixing the situation yourself is pretty poor on your behalf. I understand how shit it is working in a supermarket, especially doing jobs you don't want to do, but we just have to suck it up and get on with it. Good luck with whatever you choose to do next, but don't bother complaining about a situation you didn't do anything to help rectify.

I wasn't making an excuse to leave early at all, it was my last day I was looking forward to saying bye to the friends that I had made.

At the end of the day I know how I have felt over these past weeks and have constantly been questioning myself if it's just me that keeps getting singled out. Maybe it's in my head maybe it isn't. I've had colleagues and customers ask why I'm constantly on the front door so it's not just me that has noticed it.

I start my new job back in HR again Monday so I'm not going to dwell on this to much anyway as it taking up my day.

Seriously though (as another PP asked) how/why would anyone experienced in HR, start a thread asking Mumsnet 'What happens if I don't work my notice'?

Is that not simple basic knowledge in that line of work?

MrsAIBU · 28/11/2020 13:32

@WorraLiberty yes however I haven't worked through covid times I was unsure if anything has changed since I've been out of work. I know I can check the CIPD website but sometimes it's easier to just ask Mumsnet.

Oh ok. I know which website I'd trust more though.

Anyway good luck in your new job OP. Hope you're much happier in it.

As someone who works in HR, I am suprised you are in HR from your comments . Hmm

Just remember when you start your new HR job, it's always best to check the CIPD website rather than ask Mumsnet.

You're leaving so no one who you work with needs to keep a good working relationship going. It's why more workplaces prefer a short term of notice and holiday entitlement being taken at the end. Unfortunately you've found out that they are just work colleagues and not friends.

Personally I'd prefer to not leave under a cloud.
