Am I being over the top?

I've just walked out off work because they keep leaving me on the front door for hours and no one wants to swap. I was absolutely freezing manager said i can't just leave as they can't afford for me to leave.

I've just cried all the way home it sounds stupid but I've just had enough

If you do a four hour shift on the door then presumably other people must be doing it when you're not on it.

If you know you will be on the door then you can dress accordingly, and a coat is provided too.

When you complained about it, they said you were free to swap but nobody wanted to do it.

When you complained again, they said you could go on a till but you didn't want to do that either because you feel you lack the skills.

Are you on the door because other staff are competent on the tills whereas you are not?

Yes, I think you overreacted.

rawlikesushi · 28/11/2020 12:27

To me, it sounds like you behaved unreasonably and are now thinking of ways this can be their fault.

Redlocks28 · 28/11/2020 12:27

You told the manager that you didn’t want to do it, she gave you an alternative but you didn’t want to do and walked out?!

I agree. The more OP posts the more the story seems to change.
Nicknacky · 28/11/2020 12:35

I think you were looking for an excuse to walk out as you posted the other day about not wanting to work your notice.

And I can’t see what they did wrong anyway. You knew you would be on the door at some point, dress appropriately.

MrsAIBU · 28/11/2020 12:38

No I sat down on the checkout but I obviously didn't have a login. So when I went to find her she was already gone.

I haven't behaved unreasonably at all I was upset and I was getting emotional because no one wanted to take me off baring in my I have considered these people friends no one wanted to stand in the cold. I didn't have a login for the checkout.

OP posts:
Nicknacky · 28/11/2020 12:39

Why didn’t you say to her “I don’t have a login” rather than go sit down at the checkout.

You are an adult at work. Act like it.

WorraLiberty · 28/11/2020 12:40

I think you were looking for an excuse to walk out as you posted the other day about not wanting to work your notice.

Oh that's interesting.

MrsAIBU · 28/11/2020 12:41

Why would I need to look for an excuse to leave on my last day. I haven't done a four hour shift on the door for a while we normally do 2 hours then swap.Especially with the cold weather you would think they would keep alternating between people.

@Nicknacky because I assumed it was the same login for the self scan checkouts. You have no clue at all I've worked in other supermarkets before I had DD & DS and have never been treated like this ever.

OP posts:
Dawnlassie · 28/11/2020 12:44

Sounds like a shit manager, its not your responsibilty to ask people to swap. Its the managers responsibility to tell them.

Well which is it? Confused

Cocomarine · 28/11/2020 12:45

Why did you go and sit at a checkout that you already knew that you couldn’t use?

If you had been systematically singled out for the worst job in the store when you could have done others, you might have had a cause to raise a complaint.

However, this specific incident just sounds like you losing your rag and knowing you could get away with it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ughmaybenot · 28/11/2020 12:48

You found your excuse to walk out and not work your notice as required then 🥱

MrsAIBU · 28/11/2020 12:50

@WorraLiberty both we normally swap after two hours no one wanted to swap today because it was freezing.

You really think 6 colleagues to a small self checkout area is needed? Whilst I'm stood at the front of the door on my freezing.

OP posts:
Nicknacky · 28/11/2020 12:53

Was the person who replaced you after four hours also going to be there for the same time?

ineedsun · 28/11/2020 12:53

If you've got a level 5 qualification is HR, how do you not know what will happen if you don't work your notice?

AaronPurr · 28/11/2020 12:55

Not sure how you would know this if you were outside. Once again you're looking for a fight where there isn't one.

You were told it would be 4 hours on the door, when you told them you were cold they allowed you to go onto tills. I really don't understand why you still want to go ahead and make a complaint. Confused

WorraLiberty · 28/11/2020 12:55

Why do you not dress appropriately when you know there'll be a good chance you'll be on the door?

So you've walked out and risked your reference because you were expected to stay on the door for 2 more hours?

To answer your question, yes I think you were being over the top.

MrsAIBU · 28/11/2020 12:55

@Cocomarine I thought it was the same login as self scan but it's not.

@Nicknacky no because when I checked the schedule I was the only person who was on there for a long period of time. Everyone else's was broken up to shorter period 1-2hrs mine was a straight 4 hour period.

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 28/11/2020 12:56

That's a fair point actually.
AintPageantMaterial · 28/11/2020 12:56

You posted asking Am I being over the top? but you won’t engage with any suggestion that you might be and in a later post state I haven’t behaved unreasonably at all

You are clearly not interested in any opinions that differ with yours so it was pointless asking the question

MrsAIBU · 28/11/2020 12:57

@AaronPurr I went in to find my manager after being at the front door for 2 hours that's when I seen 6 colleagues to a self scan checkout hanging around laughing with each other. I'm not looking for a fight at all I'm just saying it doesn't seem right to me at all. The managers seem to have their favourites.

OP posts:
Nicknacky · 28/11/2020 13:00

MrsAIBU To be fair it doesn’t sound like there are many jobs you would be able to do so it’s understandable you may be on the door longer.

Nicknacky · 28/11/2020 13:01

MrsAIBU By “favourites” you mean the staff members who are can do the roles that you can’t?

AaronPurr · 28/11/2020 13:02

went in to find my manager after being at the front door for 2 hours

So you did 2 hours on the door then spoke to a manager and was able to swap to a different job. You say you haven't done a 4 hour shift on the door for a while, and that most others do 1-2 hours. I can't see why you think you're being singled out, it sounds like you're being treated the same as most of the other workers.
