There was a time when the board was alive with argument around Brexit.

Does anyone still believe that Brexit is a good move and we, as a country, will gain more than we will lose?

It doesn't matter whether anyone thinks Brexit is a good or bad idea. Brexit has happened. We left the EU in January. All we are doing now is trying to negotiate a trade deal before the transition period ends. If we do, all well and good. If we don't, then on January 1st we are on WTO rules. There is nothing to prevent the EU and UK entering into a trade agreement in the future if the will is there.

The world won't end either way.

Fifilafrog · 28/11/2020 14:17

Am yet to see a leave voter post a rational, well informed argument as to why any part of brexit would be a good idea. Interesting 🤔.

UseOfWeapons · 28/11/2020 14:26

So what are your criteria for YABU and YANBU?
Which is which in your post?🤔

I see this exact thread every two weeks. At least. Yawn.

I have read lots about how the CAP has impacted Africa
but cannot see how the UK using WTO rules will improve things
for the UK or for African farmers

InsanityRocks · 28/11/2020 14:44

@emilyfrost

I think it’s the best thing for our country, yes. People can’t see it now, but they will.
Are you Russian?

Why bother to come on and say this? Don't you have anything better to do?
OP posts:
DianaT1969 · 28/11/2020 15:22

No, nothing better to do. I like pointing out the obvious to goady posters. It gives me joy.

In the mind of many Brexiters, the financial service sector and London in general need to be torn down so the rest of the country can finally have a chance to thrive. 'Levelling up' (or down depending on your point of view).

If we get headlines of 100k city workers laid off by next summer I suspect many across the UK will quietly celebrate it.

The dismantling of the UKs primary business will be catastrophic though.

Most of us will know that the majority of city workers don’t earn the kind of money that gets in the headlines, and while salaries in the city overall are probably higher than the national average, city workers generally work long hours too. The rest of the country (thanks mainly to the media) seem to hate the city, but don’t realise what a huge contribution to the economy it makes. I’m sure I read some time ago that the city contributes almost 25% of the total tax income for the government. The financing it provides to businesses is vital in keeping people in work all over the country.

The levelling up will just see less investment across the country as the money just won't be there.

KenDodd · 28/11/2020 15:35

If it gives you joy why are you yawning?

DioneTheDiabolist · 28/11/2020 15:38

The CAP scheme has significant negative effects for Africa and effectively locks them out of trade. The true cost of farming etc in EU countries is offset with subsidies that aren't available in places like Africa and we are so used to paying subsidised prices that countries like Africa can't compete. It's well worth a Google of the negative effects of CAP on Africa.

Africa is not a country.Shock It is an entire continent. And a pretty vast and diverse one at that.Hmm

LakieLady · 28/11/2020 15:40

@SeaKingdom

I read a story in a Kent newspaper yesterday and loads of the below the line commenters were still apparently Brexit supporters. They just think any negative stories are Remainer lies.
I wonder if they'll still think it's a good idea when the whole county has become a lorry park and an open sewer for the drivers who are stuck there?
mummmy2017 · 28/11/2020 15:43

In a relationship break down, there are stages.
These seven stages include:
Shock and denial. This is a state of disbelief and numbed feelings.
Pain and guilt. ...
Anger and bargaining. ...
Depression. ...
The upward turn. ...
Reconstruction and working through. ...
Acceptance and hope.
Brexiteers are just father along in the stages.

Cornettoninja · 28/11/2020 15:44

It doesn't matter whether anyone thinks Brexit is a good or bad idea. Brexit has happened

Well yes of course, still feels like we’re in a rudderless boat though. It’d be nice if some of the people who pushed this all through stepped up and showed some actual leadership.

OlympicProcrastinator · 28/11/2020 15:50

It has benefited lorry drivers, builders, window cleaners and some other manual labour jobs where wages were driven down etc in the short term as there are less people available to do those jobs and wages have risen. Particularly in logistics. How that will pan out long term especially with Covid now is anyone’s guess and I don’t know what or if any other benefits will be seen. Maybe local fishing industry depending on what deal is thrashed out.,

OlympicProcrastinator · 28/11/2020 16:00

and an open sewer for the drivers who are stuck there?

Literally been an open sewer for the past year since most places including petrol stations closed their toilet facilities and HGV drivers are crapping in hedges up and down the open roads. Sorry for detailing just wanted to say that as I think it’s a disgrace.

OlympicProcrastinator · 28/11/2020 16:00

Derailing even!

ArabellaScott · 28/11/2020 16:57

I have read the thread and so far, benefits are:

It might help African countries who have previously struggled to trade with the UK

More non-EU immigration

Perhaps some manufacturing will move back although the loss of various factories so far seems to suggest the reverse

Some low wage workers have got more work

Others have suggested it will be good for the country but not explained how or why. And that it's a break up process remainers just don't understand.

Not really selling it, tbh. Can anyone name some definite, tangible benefits?

Crankley · 28/11/2020 17:02

Italy owes trillions of euros which its government doesn't want to repay and is on the verge of bankruptcy, Spain is in economic difficulty, Greece is in no better an economic state - they should have kept the drachma, German banks are hanging on by their fingernails.

I voted Leave and still think it's an excellent idea, looking forward to when we are finally free of the shitshow.

Don't bother asking questions, I won't be back to answer them, got bored of answer endless questions from Remainers years ago.

Crankley · 28/11/2020 17:04

answering

mummmy2017 · 28/11/2020 17:04

Arabella you need to that MN still are in the denial stage of grief.
We just need to accept it has and is happening

Helmetbymidnight · 28/11/2020 17:06

Brexiters find this sort of thread very annoying - no one likes to look stupid. From day one, they've tried to divert the conversation from why brexit is crap for the UK to ooh remainers aren't very nice.

The most fervent Brexiteer I know is very excited because he thinks we've left the European Court of Human Rights.

The person who thinks we're going to be manufacturing more - where do you think we will get our raw materials from? - i'll give you a clue - its from overseas.

I suppose now I'm rather looking forward to Brexiteers realising they've been screwed.

ArabellaScott · 28/11/2020 17:08

Denial? I know it's happening. I still just don't understand why and what the actual reasoning is. I am completely open to hearing what the benefits might be, I hope there are some. Just have yet to hear anything that convinces me there is any point whatsoever in the exercise.

Crankley, okay, but why does all that mean the UK should leave the EU?

ArabellaScott · 28/11/2020 17:09

Oh, sorry, you don't want to explain. Okay, then.
