There was a time when the board was alive with argument around Brexit.

Does anyone still believe that Brexit is a good move and we, as a country, will gain more than we will lose?

Good job the people doing trade deals with us see us as a valid trade partner.
Even the EU know they need to be able to trade with us.
The world is a big place not just the EU.

BlackForestCake · 28/11/2020 19:14

a lot of manufacturing could be bought back to the UK

There is nothing stopping you bringing manufacturing back to the UK except the reality that it is more economic to manufacture things elsewhere.

You can already buy a very nice pair of jeans made in Yorkshire. If you have a spare £150, that is.

ArabellaScott · 28/11/2020 19:23

@WaltzForDebbie

I voted for Brexit because the European Union it is just that, a political union between nations. Britain has a long history of democracy and a different system of law to the rest of Europe. I don't believe that voluntarily going into a big political experiment is a good idea. Our democracy was diluted as we only had one vote among 27. Not only that but the Commission is appointed rather than elected. Its a bit like having an unelected cabinet but an elected Parliament (where we only get to decide 1 in 27 MPs). At the moment there is a reasonable amount of consensus across Europe but that might not always be case, and a lack of democracy is fundamentally dangerous.

Secondarily I don't think the Economic union across Europe is a good idea. This was seen in the debt crisis in Greece. They were unable to devalue their currency due to the Euro and so had to take on massive debt. The EU won't last for long as an economic union because there are different economic conditions across Europe.

Thank you! This is what I was looking for. A reasonable explanation for voting for Brexit.

I may largely disagree, but I can see some of the logic and impetus, here.

I do agree that Greece were treated abysmally by both the EU and the IMF. And yes, that was cause for concern. I'm not sure that that will lead necessarily to the break up of the EU, however - the organisation/union has already gone through many years and many changes.

So, you see Brexit as a means to avoid potential problems, rather than something that will have any benefits?

I still don't understand why there is so much resentment and

ArabellaScott · 28/11/2020 19:24
  • sorry, hit return - resentment and refusal to discuss it. FWIW, I haven't commented on a Brexit thread here before, so even if some of you have discussed it at length, I haven't.
BBCONEANDTWO · 28/11/2020 19:27

I really really want to know what the pros are for us in Brexit - I can't see it myself. Regarding bringing back manufacturing - that would be marvellous really really marvellous - but it would need investment and I don't see this happening.

bellinisurge · 28/11/2020 19:32

I know I'm a usual suspect but you can count me out of this discussion. Brexiteers will not be persuaded that this is a pile of shit heading our way. And they will witter on about the oodles of brilliant trade deals- tumbleweed on that one.

mummmy2017 · 28/11/2020 19:32

But we are not part of Europe, we are sort of like an extra sticky out bit.
Which as DC said meant the underlying anti Europe feeling had come as a massive shock to him.
The comment about the amount of times we voted for the side that promised to get us out , over the last 5 years can't still mean people didn't realise how Millions of us felt.

laudemio · 28/11/2020 19:35

It is not a good idea now, but the EU is a very long way from perfect

LadyFelsham · 28/11/2020 19:36

The EU was originally The Common Market-mostly somewhere to trade and no-one paid it too much attention to it.

Then along came the court, the laws, the flag, the anthem and whispers of an army as well as the Gravy Train that most of those in power around the EU jumped on.

This was a step too far for the majority, who had no qualms about a trading block but were made uneasy about the rapid mushrooming of what looked like an unelected superpower.

So, we're leaving. Trade and travel will carry on, despite somel posturing that the UK will starve to death while the rest of Europe parties!

The EU has treated many of its members badly and is not universally popular.

Upthread, someone commented that not many Leavers will come on and that is correct. That is because as soon, as they do, they are exposed to mob patronising by those who fancy themselves cosmopolitan and those who disagree as thick-they even take the piss out of accents, spelling 'foreigners' as 'furriners'.

So, no not many leavers will come on and I won't be engaging after this.

Note however, that the vote-at the time of typing-is not far off 50-50 and then ask why the comments are 80-20 in favour of the EU. It's because no-one wants to wander into an echo chamber of people who-wrongly think themselves superior and enjoy back slapping each other.

I know this post will make no difference. In the same way, that moaning about the result will make no difference at all.

TheKeatingFive · 28/11/2020 19:50

The EU has treated many of its members badly and is not universally popular.

I never understand comments like this one. The EU is its members.

LadyFelsham · 28/11/2020 19:52

@TheKeatingFive

May I make it clearer:

Many states feel that the organisation which they have joined (THE EU) have treated them badly.

I didn't realise that I would have to spell things out quite so simply but I apologise for not having done so.

TheKeatingFive · 28/11/2020 19:54

They are the organisation though.

There’s no independent body treating them badly.

LadyFelsham · 28/11/2020 19:55

Sorry @TheKeatingFive-I've put it as simply as I can.

It is difficult, I know, but I can't really put it any plainer.

Mulderitssme · 28/11/2020 19:59

My idiot FIL has gone from saying that the benefits of Brexit will be immediate to saying that we will have the benefits in 10-15 years.

TheKeatingFive · 28/11/2020 19:59

It is difficult, I know

It’s not difficult at all, it’s just that your comment makes no sense.

TheSandman · 28/11/2020 20:03

@emilyfrost

I think it’s the best thing for our country, yes. People can’t see it now, but they will.
Actually I think this poster has a point.

Just as Britain was the first 'nation' to take advantage of the Industrial revolution and lead the world into the Modern World. Britain might well be soon leading the world in the post-industrial reversion to feudal peasant economies that will happen after catastrophic climate change and global ecological upheaval.

150 years time when some emaciated monk is transcribing "Ye True and veritable Hystory of ye Brexite" he'll be putting gold twiddles around Boris Jonson's name.

mummmy2017 · 28/11/2020 20:04

The rules meant members do not get a fair deal, and this will always happen as rules benefit some more than others, one size does not fit all.

CloudMoon · 28/11/2020 20:04

It's going to be a massive shit storm. Always was.

CloudMoon · 28/11/2020 20:07

@LadyFelsham you've been reading too much of the Daily Mail. Way too much.

Bluntness100 · 28/11/2020 20:10

No, and both sides are trying really hard to get a deal as close to what we have today as possible.

It’s beyond batshit.

TheKeatingFive · 28/11/2020 20:11

and this will always happen as rules benefit some more than others, one size does not fit all.

Can you give us some examples of the EU rules you are referencing.

Bluntness100 · 28/11/2020 20:12

@bellinisurge

To be honest, although I think it’s a bad idea, looking at the details already ironed out, a pile of shit isn’t heading our way

Both sides are doing what they can to do a deal that maintains the status quo and both enjoying the benefits they do today. It’s batshit as said. But it won’t be a shit storm.

mummmy2017 · 28/11/2020 20:17

Bulgaria, I think was going to get a certain percentage of the covid funds, there was trouble when they realised that per death they were getting £10,000 a head, while Spain was getting under a hundred.

Sometimeswinning · 28/11/2020 20:20

I dont understand why the EU haven't walked away yet? we've been awkward, far too demanding and full of ourselves! Any remoaners remainers have an idea??

Becayse the relationship is mutually beneficial
