To ask “what is the conspiracy?”

I have seen many times on social media, over the past week, people saying there is something else going on and the Covid rules are for a different reason entirely.
I just wondered if anyone truly believes the government have a different agenda for extending lockdown??

Or is it perhaps you who needs to research who funds SAGE, the WHO, Neil Ferguson, John Hopkins University, Imperial College London, the BBC and The Guardian

Who is this generous funder of all these institutions?

dividedwefall · 30/11/2020 14:23

@JimmyTheBrave

A friend of mine is getting quite obsessed with many theories at the moment.

I've tried to refer her to the BBC's fake news page but of course, she believes that the BBC are in cahoots with the UK government/bad guys so it's all propaganda. "Look at the Jimmy Saville cover up." I can't argue with that but it also doesn't prove her claims.

She will listen to me to a certain extent and I do feel like she doesn't WANT to believe the things that she's reading (she's said that she's afraid and also used the word 'consumed'). But I'm not sure what else I can do. She'll mention maybe 10 articles/instances of something she sees as corrupt to me and it'll take me a while to counter them, only for her to send more and more.

I've started listening to the conspiracy theory podcast mentioned above to better understand it all.

What makes you think you are right and she is wrong? You wouldn't be my friend for very long if you were this patronising to me.

The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation
JimmyTheBrave · 30/11/2020 14:41

@ alldividedwefall because she is saying things that have no basis in fact. Such as vaccines are causing 'all these new ailments' and that this 'new vaccine' - singular, despite there being more than one approved vaccine, 'will alter our DNA.'

I'm not patronising her, we're having an open discussion about things that she has said are consuming her. I'm trying to help her by giving her information that may help calm her fears.

She'll send me a screenshot for example, of a video called Boris Johnson warns of the dangers of technologies, and says that it keeps being removed from Youtube as 'they don't want it out there.' I found the video and watched the whole speech, and he says

“At stake is whether we bequeath an Orwellian world designed for censorship, oppression, and control; or a world of emancipation, debate, and learning. Where technology threatens famine and disease, but not our freedoms.”

The whole speech is essentially Boris saying that new technology must be built to ensure people's freedom, but she didn't watch it all to even hear that message.

Sorry, tag fail @dividedwefall

I've been following Statistics Guy Jon on Twitter. He has pointed out a significant anomaly in the governments data. Oddly today there is something amiss with his twitter account Hmm

Userzzz · 30/11/2020 16:31

@pascalstriangle well said.

chomalungma · 30/11/2020 16:52

The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation

Do they?

And there's me thinking the BBC gets money from license fee payers.

So go on, can you explain why such funding influences them?

Took 2 seconds to google it. They are one of their top 10 donors.

Because they rely heavily on the funding therefore very unlikely to make any negative reports against them Hmm

I'm studying right now and part of it is learning to uncover bias in sources of information because it means there is the possibility of an agenda making the source unreliable.

chomalungma · 30/11/2020 20:16

So the foundation is helping to fund the BBC The Guardian and Imperial College so they can't be trusted i am surprised the Daily Mail aren't all over this given how much they hate the BBC and The Guardian.

chomalungma · 30/11/2020 20:43

You've learnt that whilst you're studying?

Did you also learn that just because an organisation is funding something, there is also the possibility that the group being funded may have its independence and will report what it wants, regardless of where some of its money comes from.

Even the BBC has been known to criticise the Government now and again.

Anyway - I would love to hear more about what you think we aren't being told, what the Bill Gates Foundation is up to etc.

chomalungma · 30/11/2020 20:52

Took 2 seconds to google it. They are one of their top 10 donors

Actually - they gave £1.6 million to BBC Media Action

So not really one of the funders of the BBC. More a funder of the part that uses trustworthy media in places where the media is not trustworthy. They also get money from Sweden, Canada and the EU - so I guess no negative reporting there.

And yes - I googled it. And then I read a bit more. And did some critical thinking.

www.bbc.co.uk/mediaaction/where-we-work

In a world where media can be divisive and untrustworthy, we believe in the power of media and communication to do good.

Our work reaches millions of people facing insecurity, inequality and poverty with information they can trust. We support the independent media essential to democracy and development. And we inform, connect and inspire change in our audiences, providing trusted information, stories and ideas that generate debate and discussion, and bridge divides.

We work in 24 countries around the world, reaching more than 100 million people a year – helping to save lives and improve health, protect livelihoods, challenge inequality and build more peaceful and democratic societies.

Our strategy focuses on governance, health, building resilience and humanitarian crisis response -- all using trusted media and creative communication

chomalungma · 30/11/2020 20:53

Because they rely heavily on the funding therefore very unlikely to make any negative reports against them

I hope your studying is teaching you about critical thinking. Or even 'slow thinking, using your Type 2 thinking'.

SheepandCow · 30/11/2020 21:19

Is Bill Gates secretly the giant Big Bird robot?

SheepandCow · 30/11/2020 21:19

I love birds.

goingtosnow · 30/11/2020 21:24

And here's one more

https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-52833706

So he's definitely not the bad guy WinkHmm

chomalungma · 30/11/2020 21:42

BBC has a budget of 5 BILLION pounds.

So I don't think the Bill Gates contribution of £2 million to its charity arm makes it a major funder of the BBC.

sashh · 01/12/2020 06:00

Not read the full thread, I have heard all that were posted in the first few posts, and the changing batteries in birds.

It's worth a dip intot he b rain of David Icke for this, according to him there is no virus it's about microchips and at the same time the virus that doesn't exist is spread by 5G.

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 01/12/2020 07:51

I'm coming across quite a lot of this barking bullshit conspiracy myself. The plumber, the electrician and my brother in law, to name this month's examples.

Worriedaboutcovid19 · 01/12/2020 22:41

I dont know what the goal is. But something just feels really 'off about the whole corona thing.

I actually really really want to believe the government are being transparent and everything is as it seems. It really causes me anxiety to think otherwise.

However no matter how much I try to fully 100% believe in covid and all the measures in place, it just doesn't make sense or add up. Im a logical thinker. I dont do conspiracy theories. However I just can't shake the feeling that something about this just really isn't right.

I hope that my feelings are wrong and the conspiracy theories are all wrong and we go back to normal asap with no repercussions to our freedoms and rights.

chomalungma · 01/12/2020 23:08

However I just can't shake the feeling that something about this just really isn't right

However - we have had Trump for the last 4 years. Someone who was riding high on the economy and who has seen his record decimated by his response to Covid 19 and the effects in the US.

Surely if there was something going on - he would have be aware of it - and there is no way he would want his record destroyed like it has been.

Nomoreboobs · 02/12/2020 00:16

@Worriedaboutcovid19 That’s exactly how I feel, it definitely doesn’t feel right and more and more now. It also causes me huge anxiety too.
