If Jesus was born today ....

Not meant to be digging at Christians (I am actually one myself) but I have often wondered around this time. If a woman and her husband claimed to have been visited by God and were having the second coming of Jesus would anyone actually believe them? And if a twenty something man performed miracles would we all believe that was the Son of God or would we think it was an illusionist? What would have to occur to make anyone believe that the child or man was actually Jesus or would the majority of the human race think it was the makings of a cult? Has anyone else actually wondered this? It seems to me that we believe something that, should it happen our life time we maybe would dismiss !

@owl that sounds interesting

@doris I agree

@gabsdot45 yes I agree. That I think is my point and with modern thinking we would be even more sceptical I think. So much technology to play tricks - most wouldn't believe it. You'd get some sects etc but I doubt it would be widespread as it is now

I'm presuming walking on water wasn't possible to fake at his first coming so to witnesses it would have been something miraculous. Dynamo has found a way to do it now but he needs readily available modern plastics to do it. I'm thinking that Jesus' second coming will involve miracles that are so miraculous and inexplicable that no-one will be able to replicate. Maybe if we witnessed him build an instant bridge across the sea and you'd have to be there in person, because it could be faked on to.

waltzingparrot · 25/11/2020 19:03

*faked on tv

gottakeeponmovin · 25/11/2020 19:06

@stclair Christians have all been waiting for a second coming for sometime also but I still think we'd be sceptical. Jehovah's Witnesses are convinced the time is near. If he came back in a shower of rain and hellfire it would be obvious but if circumstances were exactly the same would we have faith? I think for many it would be no unless something utterly extraordinary was to occur 😀

@LaurieFairyCake

Have you watched Messiah on Netflix yet?

Totally deals with this - it's BRILLIANT

Came to say the same. Loved this and really think it's an accurate prediction of what would happen.
gottakeeponmovin · 25/11/2020 19:08

@waltzingparrot yes that makes sense, but I think we'd all struggle with a virgin birth!

Jesus was condemned by many during his lifetime, indeed it was more than one generation before many followed his teachings (or tried to, as we are all sinners).

So I doubt someone if it were to happen in our lifetime would be taken much notice of.

adoiada · 25/11/2020 19:12

It would be very easy to independently and scientifically verify. So if they did that, then yes I'd believe this person could heal the disabled/raise the dead/walk on water/whatever. I'd still doubt that he's the son of God though. More likely he/she would just be a time-traveller or an alien able to trick our inferior minds/technology so as to pretend they're a God.

The life of Brian is based on the socio political system of the time.

the80sweregreat · 25/11/2020 19:22

@NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace

The COVID police would be demanding to know how many households of shepherds were visiting, whether three KIngs count as a bubble and should inns/stables be open if Jerusalem is in Tier 2 or 3 by December 25th.

Grin I like that.

😃 I needed a laugh!
Mcnotty · 25/11/2020 19:23
@Mcnotty I went to a church school. My kids go to a church school. I go to church every week. I am well aware the second coming won't be the the same as the first - that wasn't the point of my post. And yes he was about thirty when he started preaching but no one knows exactly do they unless you have some amazing insight. So fuck off with your judgy shit
Attending church/church school is irrelevant in this and it’s not about being judgy. It’s about you getting your facts right. If you want to engage people in conversation about biblical theory then the least you can do is get your biblical facts rights. also He wasn’t ‘about 30’, According to the bible He was 30yrs old! so I’m amused you think no one knows.

If of course you want to debate the facts within the bible then you and everyone else are more than free to do that.

ThisThreadCouldOutMe · 25/11/2020 19:26

I think it's an interesting question and one I have considered and discussed at a Church group in the past.

I used to care for a lady who claimed to be pregnant with God's child. Not an immaculate conception though. Apparently night staff let him into her room and he "did the sex" with her. Of course we knew she was pregnant so could say with 100% certainty that it was one of her delusions. If she had been pregnant then there would have been serious questions asked. Not about God getting her pregnant but questions about who it was. Mind you she was in her 70s so being pregnant would have raised some medical questions ! Grin
When I say I cared for her, I mean in a mental hospital.

the80sweregreat · 25/11/2020 19:26

It's an interesting question though. One I have thought about myself from time to time.
I would imagine he would be vilified on social media as a fake and taken into custody to verify his miracle making claims.
Also depends which country he is born in.
I think that would be the big key as to how he is treated to be honest.
I assume he would come back as a man and not as a child too?

gottakeeponmovin · 25/11/2020 19:38

@Mcnotty I don't claim to know every single passage in the bible but my understanding is the only reference to Jesus' age when he started preaching was that he was ABOUT 30 and that was written, in Luke, years after he died. In fact there is much debate about the age he was when he died. You inferred I had never opened a bible - my reference to my schooling and going to church is with regard to that. I wouldn't have got through school without opening a bible. And my point about a virgin birth is exactly that. If the second coming was plainly I obvious of course people would believe. I was asking if things had occurred now in the same circumstances as they did then, would people believe? Everyone else seems to get it without any assertions that I have never opened a bible. Perhaps you better have a re-read if you believe it states he was absolutely 30 years old. And regardless that's totally irrelevant to my question - you are missing the point.

@mcnotty Luke 3:23
New International Version

23 Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry.(A) He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph,(B)

Pull out your bible and check. The. Maybe re-attend your bible classes if you are going to claim you are an expert

Maireas · 25/11/2020 19:48

He never claimed to be the son of God.

chomalungma · 25/11/2020 19:54

He did choose such a backward time and a strange land.
If he'd have come today, he would have reached a whole nation
Because Israel in 4 BC had no mass communication.

gottakeeponmovin · 25/11/2020 19:56

@Maireas I guess but he certainly strongly hinted 😂

@LibrariesGiveUsPower45321

Also agree with Tabitha. Mumsnet is very hostile to Christians. You wouldn’t ask this of any other religion.
Is it?

Or is it anti the rights that Christianity (in fact - the C of E as the Established Church) has in this country?

See compulsory worship in schools unless you opt out, a State Religion.

Enjoy your faith. Believe in who you want. I hope it enhances your life But don't impose that religion on people who don't want it imposed on them.

Mcnotty · 25/11/2020 20:06

@gottakeeponmovin
if a woman and her husband claimed to have been visited by God and were having the second coming of Jesus would anyone actually believe them? Your own words. You asked about the second coming. If you had asked about the original birth of Christ occurring today, I wouldn’t have said anything.

And if a twenty something man performed miracles would we all believe that was the Son of God At least you’ve done a quick google and seen you were wrong.

gottakeeponmovin · 25/11/2020 20:09

Of for goodness sake @Mcnotty you are boring me now. If the second coming was obvious the question wouldn't exist would it. Bore off

OP posts:
gottakeeponmovin · 25/11/2020 20:12

@Mcnotty and it's about the second coming. The fact we believe what happened the first time and would we believe if it happened again. You've missed the whole point of the question and instead just come on with a barrage of inaccurate facts
