If Jesus was born today ....

Not meant to be digging at Christians (I am actually one myself) but I have often wondered around this time. If a woman and her husband claimed to have been visited by God and were having the second coming of Jesus would anyone actually believe them? And if a twenty something man performed miracles would we all believe that was the Son of God or would we think it was an illusionist? What would have to occur to make anyone believe that the child or man was actually Jesus or would the majority of the human race think it was the makings of a cult? Has anyone else actually wondered this? It seems to me that we believe something that, should it happen our life time we maybe would dismiss !

Hardly anyone who actual met Jesus in person when He was alive became a beleiver.
It's all about faith.

Mcnotty · 25/11/2020 17:56

@gottakeeponmovin

I'm not mocking at all. I am a Christian and I go to church every week (well zoom now) I just think it's an interesting question. And yes Jesus did miracles like turning water in to wine but David Copperfield made the Statue of Liberty disappear. You could very much ask the same points on other religions - I am just more familiar with mine
But it’s not an interesting question because your question has no biblical basis for it to be meaningful. The bible doesn’t say Jesus will be reborn of a woman in the same fashion He did first time around, nor does it say around what time it will happen. You’re conflating Christmas with the second coming. You also don’t seem to know that Jesus started his ministry at 30yrs old, so He wasn’t a twenty something. These are basic facts that most Christians that go to church know.

By all means ask any question you want but I Doubt you’ve ever opened a bible Grin.

It would depend how he came across.

I'm a psychiatrist, I hear all kinds of delusional beliefs.

Some people add very, very believable, even when what they're saying sounds utterly crazy...

PhilCornwall1 · 25/11/2020 17:59

I struggle to understand how people believe what's rattled on about now to be honest. I mean, how is any of it remotely believable?

Daisy62 · 25/11/2020 18:04

The Testament of Mary by Colm Toibin is a good read (novella, originally a play), about Jesus's mother and what she sees as the madness of her son's mission and following.

The Jews were waiting for a Messiah to come, so they were expecting Him in some shape or form I guess

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 25/11/2020 18:16

Why shouldn't religion be mocked? To many of us, it's stupid and can be harmful.

Well, it's not a pleasant thing to do, is it? You may think it stupid but you're hardly likely to benefit anyone by expressing that.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 25/11/2020 18:17

It's all about faith.

Exactly. No proof. No evidence. You either have faith. Or you don't.

PaperTowels · 25/11/2020 18:19

Plenty of people have never believed he was the son of god. Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, etc etc.

So? I would never be cruel to a person because they were religious but it's not 'unpleasant' to express an opinion about religion in general.

You weren't referring to 'expressing an opinion'. You expressly mentioned 'mocking' and it's that which, in my own opinion only, is unpleasant.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 25/11/2020 18:26

The COVID police would be demanding to know how many households of shepherds were visiting, whether three KIngs count as a bubble and should inns/stables be open if Jerusalem is in Tier 2 or 3 by December 25th.

Grin I like that.

Yeah, I guess it is if you're mocking a person. Mocking religion is fair play, imo. Same as mocking the flat earth theory.

I went to university with a girl that had an immaculate conception, what surprised me was how similar the baby looked to baby pictures of her boyfriend.

2bazookas · 25/11/2020 18:30

Nobody would believe Mary is a virgin

Joseph would demand a DNA test and refuse to pay CM
The Council would put up Mary and Jesus in a B and B
Jesus would be classified as SN and spend his entire schooldays in woodwork class Leaving at 16, he would cause some trouble in town , appear on TV and get talent spotted for a new gameshow in which blind dates and widowed pensioners compete for huge prizes.
During his USA tour , Jesus announces a new miracle; he has just won the American Election and is now POTUS.
Donald Trump says its not fair, Jesus was not born in USA.

@LaurieFairyCake

Thank you for recommending this I'm really enjoying it. First episode nearly
Done.

Pukkatea · 25/11/2020 18:34

I suppose we would have to get Jesus to perform a miracle that could be verified scientifically, like we do with psychics and ghost hunters etc. Controlled conditions and all that.

Schmoana · 25/11/2020 18:38

Just to say that the messiah on Netflix is a fab and thought provoking series whether you believe or not!

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 25/11/2020 18:40

People will believe any old hogwash these days.

DorisDaisyMay · 25/11/2020 18:41

Well he wasn’t that unique at the time in terms of the rabbi/disciple thing he had going on. That was quite a usual societal set up. More unusual was the working-class roots of Jesus and the Disciples.

He also wasn’t alone in claiming to be the son of God. From the teaching’s in the bible he appears to be funny and so was probably charismatic (pun intended). What is unusual is how his story has endured though time.

... I often wonder if I was around at the time would I believe with the same fortitude I do now, and I have to conclude I probably wouldn’t. It’s easier to believe when it’s not a person physically claiming these things I think.

GameSetMatch · 25/11/2020 18:42

Even back then people thought Jesus was mad! He just had enough followers to get himself heard.

This day and age it’s the same people think Jesus is the son of god and worship him and others don’t....

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 25/11/2020 18:43

Same as mocking the flat earth theory.

So now you're telling me the earth's not flat? Fuck me, I can't cope Shock I'm off home.

@Mcnotty I went to a church school. My kids go to a church school. I go to church every week. I am well aware the second coming won't be the the same as the first - that wasn't the point of my post. And yes he was about thirty when he started preaching but no one knows exactly do they unless you have some amazing insight. So fuck off with your judgy shit
