A visor is not a face covering

Just that, AIBU?

OP posts:
Terriorer · 25/11/2020 06:53

This is a deliberately goady post and run.

midnightstar66 · 25/11/2020 07:02

I don’t care if you reply to my comment or not, so I’m really not sure of my point.
You told me not to reply to the OP if I found it boring or repetitive, and that she is free to post what she wants.
Yes she is... as am I. So just as you think it’s weird that I would reply to the OP, I think it’s weird that you replied to me telling me not to. So I guess we’re eve
n.
The difference is the OP posted something because the answers interested her. You came here not to contribute to the discussion but just to be rude. I find that a little unpleasant. If you turn up in a discussion purely to be unpleasant both in real life of behind a screen you should expect to sometimes be called out on it. I didn't tell you not to reply. You keep changing my words to strengthen your argument, I just wondered why you bothered to reply to something so are so disinterested in.

Its fine if you wear it with a mask. I wear both as I'm trying to avoid the miserable annual cold as well as covid.

Moondust001 · 25/11/2020 07:05

If you mean Covid precautions, then no. Not when it's something that impacts on so many other people. It's the same as drink driving.

It really, really isn't the same thing as drink driving. And that statement is very offensive to those who have lost loved ones to drunk drivers. There are medical reasons why some people cannot wear masks, and despite thinking otherwise, Mumsnetters are not the Covid police and it is not in their gift to decide whether they should qualify or not. The law says that some people don't have to wear masks, and that nobody has the right to judge them on that basis. There is no exceptions for drunk drivers. The law doesn't permit exceptions. You should not drive under the influence of alcohol.

SueEllenMishke · 25/11/2020 07:17

Why must people be so judgmental and preachy? This pandemic has really brought the worst out in some people.

I teach at at a university and wear a visor during lectures. If I were to wear a mask then the students wouldn't be able to hear me as were in large rooms, spaced out and have the window open. I'm also being recorded so those unable to attend can't watch the videos back. Again, a mask would make it difficult to hear me.

Notanothernamechanged101 · 25/11/2020 07:19

YABU (or at least wrong grin). Mine covers my face

With gaps all around where airborne particles can escape.

www.bbc.com/future/article/20200806-are-face-shields-effective-against-covid-19
“Nearly all of the aerosols were coming around the side of the face shield and reached nearly the same distances as without wearing anything,”

LaLaLandIsNoFun · 25/11/2020 07:22

Selfish fucker here....

I don’t wear a mask

REALLY REALL REALLY selfish fucker because I don’t wear a visor either (because they’re pretty pointless)

I guess I really shouldn’t be allowed an opinion though, because I’m a selfish fucker

Happy to carry on being a selfish fucker, walking around Sainsbos, feeling ver sad for those who are mentally judging me when they know fuck all about me.

Damnloginpopup · 25/11/2020 07:26

As much use as tits on fish.

AngelDelightUK · 25/11/2020 07:26

My insurance for work says I have to wear a visor not a mask. That way people can see your face, and can lip read etc. They’d hate it if I wore a mask

Hello selfish fucker, another selfish fucker here too.

I don't walk around Sainsbos Hmmor anywhere for that matter. Fed up with the judgemental buggers who know absolutely nothing about the reason I can't wear one.

bigvig · 25/11/2020 07:31

Visors are pointless but then if you do even a tiny bit of research so are most masks. I feel an idiot every time I go out in mine. I can feel the air being sucked in and out the sides of it. I've tried lots of different ones btw they all seem the same. The disposable ones are also a nightmare for the environment - don't we care about that any more!

nannybeach · 25/11/2020 07:33

The rules just say "face covering", so a visor is a face covering, too many people still think a mask is to prtoect them from other people.People in close contact, hairdressers etc are meant to wear both, mine does, (obviously closed at the moment) my friends dont.

Happymum12345 · 25/11/2020 07:36

For people that say it’s not anyone else’s business, I don’t agree. Visors are not an adequate protection. The idea of a mask is it helps to protect other people-visors don’t do this. It’s utterly selfish of people not to wear a mask. I know there are some people who struggle with masks for reasons of trauma, but for everyone else, wear a mask.

MiddleClassMother · 25/11/2020 07:36

At work we have to wear visors for security reasons, we can't cover our faces. We social distance for the most part and if everyone wears one then the chance of infection is still pretty low.

LaLaLandIsNoFun · 25/11/2020 07:41

@PhilCornwall1

waves to fellow selfish fucker

SchadenfreudePersonified · 25/11/2020 07:44

It isn't - but it shows willing.

A local shop insists on a mask or a visor. If you don't have one, you don't get in. They were sick of people saying "Oh, I'm exempt" but not giving a reason/evidence (which is their right). So they have a sign.

No MASK
No VISOR
NoENTRY
No EXCEPTIONS!

They will provide face coverings, including visors, if people haven't got one.

SpillingTheTea · 25/11/2020 07:45

A face visor for those who can't wear a mask is better than nothing.
Least they are trying to do their bit! Of course there is someone to shoot them down.

SueEllenMishke · 25/11/2020 07:45

So, if I wear a visor to teach I'm selfish but if I wear a mask my students can't hear me which is a problem ..... especially as they're paying thousands of pounds to be there 🤷🏼‍♀️

SchadenfreudePersonified · 25/11/2020 07:46

(oOh - should have mentioned- the staff is behind a screen, too, so they do do their best to protect everyone.)

flaviaritt · 25/11/2020 07:46

They probably don’t work, but those wearing them probably find masks unbearable so 🤷🏻‍♀️

LaLaLandIsNoFun · 25/11/2020 07:49

@SchadenfreudePersonified

Nope, demanding to know the reason why someone cannot wear a mask is not a ‘right’. Sorry.

SpillingTheTea · 25/11/2020 07:50

Also I work in a mask and visor for 9+ hours a day pre covid. The visors aren't pointless at all. They do protect albeit not as well as a mask but they still protect. If someone was infected you are not going to get the full exposure that you wouldn't if they didn't have a mask because it's a barrier. Yes it can escape the sides but that's not different to someone wearing a home made mask (depending on material) or a mask under their nose.

Lovemusic33 · 25/11/2020 07:52

Some people are unable to wear a mask, would you rather they wore a visor or wore nothing? Most people wearing them are those that are exempt from wearing a mask.

Othering · 25/11/2020 07:52

@Nicknacky

And who made you the face covering judge?

People need to start minding their own business.

Quite.
BrownMilk · 25/11/2020 07:52

It's clear that masks help to protect everyone- it's a collective action for collective protection. I'd ask those who don't wear them, what can be done to help you wear them, at least some of the time?

At work (over 100 staff) nobody has been unable to wear a mask. Some more at risk of getting seriously unwell with covid (including asthma) wear higher grade mask (more difficult to wear) to give them better protection while still protecting others. Some people have tried different brands to find what suits them.

IMO the only objective exclusions are not understanding the request and not being able to put on/take off.

We do need to take the toxicity and judgment out of the discussion because it doesn't help the legitimate goal of promoting mask wearing. We need to help people to wear masks too- better designs, better textiles, better psychological support. Whatever it takes, we should all be supporting that too.
