Too many people and too few bathrooms?

DH and I have been invited to a birthday celebration next summer (COVID-permitting). The hosts have booked a large country house and it’s a Friday-Monday event. There will be 10 couples, so 20 guests in total, but there are only two bathrooms ………. I can’t see this working, or AIBU? I think we had a better bathroom ratio when I was at University!

I would think you need portaloos though

WhereamI88 · 23/11/2020 13:32

My first thought would be I'm too old for this shit. 16 people and 2 bathrooms for 4 days sounds like a nightmare.

VinylDetective · 23/11/2020 13:49

This morning, on the back of this thread, I timed my bathroom time - seven minutes to shower, wash my hair and brush my teeth. At that rate eight people could easily get through one bathroom in a couple of hours. All it takes is a bit of give and take and not being precious. I do appreciate that’s a bit of an alien concept in the 21st century.

Sexnotgender · 23/11/2020 13:51

Nowhere near enough.

We had family stay a couple of years ago.

6 adults, a teenager and 2 children.

One bathroom and one separate toilet.

Absolute nightmare.

Yes – a couple of hours! That’s exactly my issue. If I want a shower in the morning, I don’t want to wait a couple of hours! I appreciate that occasionally circumstances conspire against us – leaks, power cuts, the ceiling comes down – and your bathroom is out of action for a while, but making an election to spend the weekend in primitive circumstances is something entirely different!

How many toilets though?

Technically I have one bathroom in my house.
But I also have an en suite in one of the bedrooms and a downstairs toilet-.

HotSince63 · 23/11/2020 13:56

Would there even be enough hot water for the last couple of people?

In a holiday home only providing 2 bathrooms for 20 people, I doubt they've splashed out on an amazing boiler and/or a massive hot water tank.

NearlyMonday · 23/11/2020 14:03

Each ensuite has a toilet, and there are two communal toilets. And very good point about hot water!!!

OllyBJolly · 23/11/2020 14:09

Not workable. When I book for extended family I make sure there is at least one bathroom per family.

(At least camping you can take yourself off with a spade. Not really acceptable in a holiday let)

speakout · 23/11/2020 14:13

Many properies don't have hot water tanks.
70% of properties in the UK have combi boilers- no tank. Instant hot water.

pinkdragons · 23/11/2020 14:14

I have a holiday home with 3 double bedrooms and just one bathroom.

It is not ideal when there are six of us adults staying. I purposely now only invite one other couple at a time as it's just not comfortable sharing a bathroom with so many. We can manage.. but it's just not what I want these days.
Stay elsewhere OP!

livefornaps · 23/11/2020 14:18

You know what it's like though, you try the door, it's locked, you knock, you hear your friend's hubby say "just a minute" and then lots of shuffling....minutes later the flush goes, then friend's hubby strides out looking like a cat who's just taken a massive crap, you walk in the shitter and there's a putrid stench in the air, with a warm loo seat scattered with pubes

HotSince63 · 23/11/2020 14:20

There's a good reason why combi boilers aren't usually installed in larger properties and hotels.

This isn't a big property though- only two bathrooms remember?

HotSince63 · 23/11/2020 14:28

You're suggesting a 10 bedroom house with annexe isn't a big property. Ok then Grin.

Itsonlymakebelieve · 23/11/2020 14:34

I have IBS it would be a complete nightmare for me. Chances are someone in a group that size would have medical problems needing urgent access to a bathroom or women dealing with periods during the day. What about if your room is next to one of the communal bathrooms there would be a steady stream of people having a last toilet visit before bed, night time visits ( wee or post sex) and first thing in the morning toilet visits. The toilet would be flushing constantly I wouldn’t be able to sleep if it were me.

BakewellGin1 · 23/11/2020 14:39

Unless there are people with IBS/urgent toilet issues I don't see a problem it's 3 days not 3 months...

Every New Year we book a property for 17 of us which has 2 bathrooms. People vary in their getting up times, getting ready times naturally with no planning.

It only takes a tiny bit of planning to make your own life easier.. Wash hair Friday, dry shampoo roots Saturday (but still shower/wash) then wash hair Sunday... There is only an issue if everyone requires an hour of hair washing.. Even a long shower for me is 10 minutes max with a hair wash thrown in. I doubt everyone is the up at 7 demanding a shower by 7.10 type...

Macncheeseballs · 23/11/2020 14:40

Is waiting 2 hours for a shower on a lazy weekend morning really so bad?

BigSandyBalls2015 · 23/11/2020 14:49

Do you know what the plan is whilst you are there, ie is it a laid back chill out weekend, enjoying the house/food/drink or is it an up and out, itinerary sort of weekend? If it's the former then the shower situation wouldn't be so bad, staggering it.

I stayed in a 5 bed house with 2 bathrooms last year - 10 ladies in all - and it was fine. The main agg was the last evening - Sunday night - half of the group wanted to finish off the remains in the fridge for dinner, the other half wanted to stroll to the pub for a roast. When I say remains ….. about 4 slices of pizza, the end of some cheese, a sad little bowl of salad, half a loaf Shock.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 23/11/2020 14:52

Will there even be enough hot water for 20 people to shower? If it's an older property I can't imagine it having the most up to date plumbing!

Gooseygoosey12345 · 23/11/2020 14:53

Oops should've read the thread, that's already been mentioned

GlowingOrb · 23/11/2020 14:54

We have 10 people for 2 bathrooms when we go to the ILs holiday home. Thankfully both have showers. It’s still awful. My MIL agrees. We even sat down and figured out what they spend to keep up the house every year and the days the house is used and figured out that they could rent us all suites at the posh resort up the road for less money. Plus there would be no maintenance work during visits. FIL
Won’t change tradition though.

Twigletgirl27 · 23/11/2020 15:20

For me it would be a definite no! It's bad enough when my DH and I visit my SIL. Then there are 4 of us with one loo (in the bathroom, not separate) and last time I was there it was a nightmare. For me the problem isn't so much the washing facilities it's the lack of access to toilets. Mind when I need to go I NEED to go so maybe it's just me......

FudgeDrudge · 23/11/2020 15:21

Unfortunately my hair gets very greasy at the roots

Because you wash it every day.

Look, if you don't like the set up,. don't go. It's an invite, for a free weekend. If bathrooms matter more than the company, just don't go.

Ginfordinner · 23/11/2020 15:39

@Macncheeseballs

Jesus, it's just 3 days, surely you can manage, its sounds like a fun weekend, most of your time will be doing other things than using a bathroom
I have IBS. I want my own loo thank you
