Too many people and too few bathrooms?

DH and I have been invited to a birthday celebration next summer (COVID-permitting). The hosts have booked a large country house and it’s a Friday-Monday event. There will be 10 couples, so 20 guests in total, but there are only two bathrooms ………. I can’t see this working, or AIBU? I think we had a better bathroom ratio when I was at University!

I would raise it and I certainly wouldn’t be going with a lack of facilities.

Queenofthemadouse · 23/11/2020 10:38

Horrendous. You'd have to be up at 5 to get a shower. Not to mention the use of toilets at key times... 😳

ThisBear · 23/11/2020 10:42

Oh no, that sounds like a nuisance. There's no winning, you get in first and feel like you're hogging it, or you let others go first and end up coming downstairs last feeling like the late one everybody's waiting for. A shame to miss out on a fun weekend for the sake of it, but I don't know...

Knittedfairies · 23/11/2020 10:44

I'd be looking for a nearby b&b!

tattychicken · 23/11/2020 10:45

Ring the owners and ask?

Atalune · 23/11/2020 10:46

From the link- call the venue and find c kit from yourself.

NearlyMonday · 23/11/2020 10:46

Good idea, I will contact the owners and ask myself

Come back and tell us!

Funkypolar · 23/11/2020 10:47

I don’t think 20 people from 10 different households will be “allowed” to mix by the summer.

WeAllHaveWings · 23/11/2020 10:48

Really cannot see a 10 bedroom commercial property suitable for 20 people only having 2 loos and 1 shower. Call and ask.

MrsClatterbuck · 23/11/2020 10:52

I couldn't cope with this as I suffer from IBS and mild diverticulitis where time is really of the essence.

notanothertakeaway · 23/11/2020 10:53

Large self catering houses with few bathrooms are often noticeably cheaper than houses with more bathrooms

If you are all paying for yourselves, I think it would be reasonable to ask if they might consider a house with more bathrooms, acknowledging that this will increase the price

However, if the hosts are paying for the accommodation, it may be that they have chosen the biggest house they can afford, in which case I would suck it up

NearlyMonday · 23/11/2020 10:57

Right. Two of the bedrooms are ensuite. Then there are two 'communal bathrooms', one has a bath, the other has a shower. As the two ensuites are obviously accessed via a bedroom, I'm not sure this is much help, but it does mean that two couples won't be trying to access public bathrooms. However this still means 16 people are trying to use 2 bathrooms, and there's only one shower.

PS - one of the ensuite bedrooms is in an Annex, ie not part of the main house.

flaviaritt · 23/11/2020 11:04

It wouldn’t be the bathrooms that bothered me. Ten couples in a ten bedroom house just sounds like hell.

HotSince63 · 23/11/2020 11:07

I’d give it a miss. The hosts lack some basic organizing skills if they didn’t figure out that this would be a problem

I agree with this. If they haven't considered the basics what else have they missed?

That bathroom is going to need cleaning a couple of times a day, not a quick wipe, a proper clean. Who will be doing that?

One shower between 16 people. No thanks.

Silentplikebath · 23/11/2020 11:11

YANBU

If you want to join the celebration book your own accommodation somewhere else.

Atalune · 23/11/2020 11:12

Is it cheap?

How old are you all!? In my twenties I would have thought this was fine. Now...not so much!

NearlyMonday · 23/11/2020 11:14

I'm in my late 40s. I assume the other guests will be similar.

OP posts:
NearlyMonday · 23/11/2020 11:14

And the hosts are not charging us for this.

caringcarer · 23/11/2020 11:14

We bought a holiday home in France, 7 large bedrooms. It only had a weird sink with 2 electric rings attached. Those were only cooking facilities no oven for up to 14 guests. 1 bathroom, 1 shower room and a downstairs loo. First thing we had to do was get a microwave with 2 more rings on top and a mini oven. We were going to have a new kitchen last summer but Covid stopped us. The lack of showers and separate loos would mean I would not be keen but as only 3 days maybe it is possible.

Choccorocco · 23/11/2020 11:24

Well it’s not ideal but I’m surprised at the number of people who wouldn’t go?! Just be quick! Check with other people if you’re going to be in there for an hour doing your hair, or ask one of the lucky en suite people if you can pop in there to do your hair since it takes a while and take advantage of the loo while you’re in there if that’s what you’re worried about?
I hate sharing bedrooms when I go away with girlfriends and I’m not keen at all on sharing bathrooms but it wouldn’t be a dealbreaker over 3 days.

Atalune · 23/11/2020 11:35

House share/party houses sound like fun but sometimes they bring out the worst in people and it’s a bit like student flat shares again- “who’s eaten the last sausage!?” Type of drama. Wink

Silvercatowner · 23/11/2020 11:43

No chance - sounds awful.

Wexone · 23/11/2020 11:46

I agree with what everyone says not enough bathrooms. However i have very long thick hair and there is no way i wash it every day. the benefit of long thck hair is it doesnt get greasy quckly. so no need to wash it every day, bfore lock down i was only washing two or three times a week, now as in lock down i have managed to get it down to once a week. If i go to a hairdresser for a blowdry, i manage to get nearly 5 days out of it depending on how well its done. Maybe this is somtheing you can look at aswell.
