To want to escape the U.K

I’ve become so disillusioned with his government, it’s corrupt and awful nasty politicians such as Priti Patel and cannot stomach to even see Boris Johnson on the television or the sound of his empty waffling forever gaslighting.

I’m seriously feeling depressed at what we have as a gov’t.

Wouldn’t it be lovely to have a sensible morally correct leadership of intelligent people you could actually trust to lead a nation.

Feeling really down about it.

I left the U.K. in 2094, best thing I ever did but the government in my country are no better.

@BLToutanowhere

Feel free to leave. I'm sick of the constant nitpicking. Does anything really change for the majority of people regardless of who is in charge?

As for accountability, it's called voting. Apparently quite a lot of people left Labour for the Tories which considering it's a total shit show according to some of you, says a hell of a lot about Labour.

If you're sick of the constant nitpicking, why don't YOU leave?

Oh right, because it's your home too? You just don't like a certain aspect of it?

Maybe put your empathy pants on and stop going straight to the overused 'don't like it? Then leave' trope.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 22/11/2020 12:34

Oh god, me too, I loathe it here. And I do feel trapped.

willitbetonight · 22/11/2020 12:34

Where would you like to live OP? I'm genuinely interested at where you think would be so much better?

I agree with you that things are getting worse by the way. But I think that is the case around the world. Globalisation is the cause. A very small percentage are becoming globally rich and the rest of us (even the traditionally upper middle class) are being dumbed down turned into consumers in our debt based society.

Please tell us what happens next?! Dying to know. Is David Attenborough still with us or cryogenically (environmentally consciously) preserved? 😍

The second thing...Russian meddling. Just as in the brexit vote, there were dark forces and psychological weapons deployed just before the vote. It was never a representative vote. The next indyref will be as we're wise to the tactics now and we've had enough of the actions of the govt chosen by England.

Russian meddling?

"There is a reason Russia Today pumps out so much independence-related and SNP-sympathetic content. There is a reason it airs a weekly show fronted by a former first minister of Scotland and icon of Scottish nationalism. There is a reason Sputnik chose Edinburgh for its UK headquarters..."

It’s so depressing to know that this government will be in power for so many more years. And are there hover cars?

AgeLikeWine · 22/11/2020 12:59

In a democracy we get the politicians we vote for and, consequently, the government we deserve.

Nothing that has happened in the last 5 years has come as a surprise to any of us who warned from the start that Brexit would be a disaster, that Corbyn was unelectable and that Johnson was a dishonest, untrustworthy buffoon.

SerendipityJane · 22/11/2020 13:12

In a democracy we get the politicians we vote for and, consequently, the government we deserve.

not really. Remember FPTP means that all votes for the person who didn't win are ignored, wasted as may as well have been used to paper the downstairs bog.

If MPs are determined - as they are - to ignore all the people who didn't vote for them, then you start to stretch the pizza dough of "democracy" dangerously thin.

As a wag once noted, Democracy is like two wolves and a lamb deciding what to have for dinner. And some people are sick and tired of being lambs.

Beentherefonethat · 22/11/2020 13:15

2094 Grin That’ll teach me to proof read, not.

I’ll be long gone by 2094!

nosswith · 22/11/2020 13:26

@AgeLikeWine whilst I expected Mr Johnson to pursue policies I disagree with, in a pandemic I expected some degree of competence.

Not the level of incompetence we have had. I still maintain that if Jeremy Hunt had been Tory leader, there would have been at least 10,000 fewer deaths.

Andante57 · 22/11/2020 13:30

Going to Ireland is our "if it actually gets too dangerous to live here" plan. Otherwise, we sit it out

Bellini when you say ‘dangerous’ do you mean rising crime, stabbings etc?

AgeLikeWine · 22/11/2020 13:36

@nosswith I agree about Hunt. In fairness, almost anyone would make a better job of being PM in a crisis than Johnson. Except, perhaps, Corbyn.

Clavinova · 22/11/2020 13:37

Bellini when you say ‘dangerous’ do you mean rising crime, stabbings etc?

No - she means marauding gangs stealing food from private homes because of Brexit.

jasjas1973 · 22/11/2020 14:02

@Clavinova

jasjas1973 bojo didn't take Cv seriously did he, even now, judging by his recent isolation

How careless of Michel Barnier and Ursula von der Leyen then - at least two isolations each and Barnier tested positive earlier in the year.

Neither are heads of state, or running a country with the worst death toll in europe and 5th highest in the world.

But nice try a whataboutery :)

bellinisurge · 22/11/2020 14:13

Actually, Clav, I mean unchecked civil disorder where I can't just hide. Or a rise in unchecked anti Semitic violence.

jasjas1973 · 22/11/2020 14:15

I'm genuinely interested at where you think would be so much better

South west france, in the midi pyrenees, say Figeac or closer toward Ax Les Thermes? both places i ve worked in, so not just from a hols perspective.
Proper seasons, cheap wine, great weather in the spring, summer and autumn, a scattered population, empty roads, cheaper housing too, not far from the med if you want some quite beaches.
& a far better health service.

So with all that, one doesn't have to worry about politics :)

jasjas1973 · 22/11/2020 14:16

quiet oops!

OhTinnitus · 22/11/2020 14:26

@QuizzlyBear I completely agree, it's something I struggle with too in considering all this. But I do think community spirit breeds a healthy feeling of power and security that many people are lacking in (and would benefit so much from).

I think lots of people have such hard and busy lives that getting involved locally seems daunting and I completely get that. I'm disabled myself so I can't achieve much physically, which is frustrating, but there's still plenty I can do from home like buying from local businesses, supporting local charities, or ringing to check on elderly neighbours. It doesn't sound like much but if lots of other people chipped in too, it would make a real difference.

Neither are heads of state, or running a country with the worst death toll in europe and 5th highest in the world.

Belgium, Spain and Italy all now have more Covid deaths per 1M population than the UK. EU countries - under the guidance of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen - who last month drove 5/6 hours from Brussels to Germany to self isolate - when strictly speaking she should have stayed in Belgium. She also had to self-isolate at the end of September after what many called a 'non-essential' trip to Portugal.

Also - October; "EU does no contact tracing after ministers test positive for coronavirus."

MimiDaisy11 · 22/11/2020 14:38

They are a dreadful government. And they're not even skilled and so transparent in their ineptitude. Boris' come back to everything is that it's political point-scoring - I mean Keir asked him about the £20 million payout to the man in Spain for consultancy fees and that's his answer?

Clavinova · 22/11/2020 14:39

Actually, Clav, I mean unchecked civil disorder where I can't just hide.

At least you are a bit calmer now - I remember your posts from 18months/2 years ago.

jasjas1973 · 22/11/2020 14:45

Clav Again, neither are heads of state... do you think Bojo having a series of MPs in Downing street for what appears to be no more than a photo call was wise?
I certainly wont pretend to defend either Barnier or Von der Leyen,if she travelled to Portugal, then she is a fool, Barnier is involved in ongoing complex face to face negotiations so perhaps is at greater risk.
I think the UK's excess deaths is the highest in europe, currently around 70k, shocking.

Regardless, its thread about better places than the UK to live in.....so i vote S/W france! have you any favourites?

Difficult to compare if some countries have a two year average - others a five year average etc.

Regardless, it's a thread about better places than the UK to live in.....so i vote S/W france! have you any favourites?

I like France a lot - but the recent terrorist attacks there have been quite worrying. Also, our French friends complain about the school system and excessive amounts of homework in secondary school - so I would have to send ds2 to an international school if we moved there. Switzerland or Denmark perhaps.

bellinisurge · 22/11/2020 15:20

Hi Clav. I a can't help how you interpreted my posts. I'm sure you need to pop out again shortly or some other shit.
