AIBU to think it's disgusting that the pay of Nurses, Prison Officers, police, Teachers and other public service workers who have kept us safe despite the risk to themselves throughout this Covid year are the ones that get their pay frozen

You should count yourself lucky if you have a job at the moment, let alone a pay rise

Apparently the prison service is crying out for new recruits. Let's see if they get lots of applications now for this 'lucky to have it' job

The private sector isn't all the same! Plenty of people in the private sector only earn minimum wage, I am one of them, my wage doesn't rise in line with inflation either.

Dongdingdong · 21/11/2020 16:12

No, I refuse to think I’m “lucky” to have an mentally demanding arduous job during covid

What about people with mentally demanding arduous jobs in the private sector, many of whom haven’t had a pay rise for years and have far less job security, because their work isn’t deemed “essential”?

Dongdingdong · 21/11/2020 16:13

Try losing your job because of Covid. That’s fucking stressful.

SentientAndCognisant · 21/11/2020 16:14

I am not telling them they are lucky @Dongdingdong
I’m not telling anyone to pipe down and be grateful

KatieB55 · 21/11/2020 16:37

Care workers need a pay rise. Can the Government order private care homes to raise their rates and have a pay grade system?

SentientAndCognisant · 21/11/2020 16:46

No. The govt cannot compel a private company to raise pay, only compulsion is to pay NMW
If you raise pay the companies will raise fees , that increase affects individuals and local authorities

StoneofDestiny · 21/11/2020 16:57

Losing your job for any reason is. Unemployment for anybody is a problem - whatever the reason.

OP posts:
StoneofDestiny · 21/11/2020 17:02

Most people vote with tax in mind and in that sense the majority of the public have provided the status of how much is available to pay public sector workers

Shame we all don't vote for the common good instead. Maybe if we get through Covid there might be more sensitivity for the sick (mentally and physically), the unemployed, the homeless and the vulnerable and a lot more understanding of people doing difficult jobs in dangerous places.

SentientAndCognisant · 21/11/2020 17:03

Try losing your job because of Covid. That’s fucking stressful yes I agree
However it doesn’t mean that public sector workers must acquiesce to pay freeze or be made to feel lucky or grateful

Dongdingdong · 21/11/2020 17:05

I just think it's bizarre to expect an automatic pay rise every year personally. But then I work in the private sector and our pay has been frozen for years now.

cyclingmad · 21/11/2020 17:06

I've worked on both sectors and never had this bizarre private vs public sector mentality. Each has its perks.

But you know what its really disgusting some of the comments on here so let's settle this, let's get rid of public sector.

Privatise it all, bin collections, social care, libraries, medical care, a dental too, everything.

Then you can all pay it out of your own pocket. Lets see how happy you are then.

And I echo other posters here, most if jot all final salary pensions are no longer there, each yr there are restructures and redundancies etc.

Enjoy your privatised life and be prepared to pay for it...so flipping ungrateful

cyclingmad · 21/11/2020 17:06

On and the by the way pre covid when private sector was doing well, guess what public sector were still on pay freezes.

WishMyNameWasWittyNotShitty · 21/11/2020 17:09

I'm Public Sector and my job isn't safe at all, and in real terms we will have had a 20% pay cut over the past few years with the pay freezes we have had.
Our pensions aren't gold plated either, all in all it's another kick, to the lower paid staff who keep the services running, often at a cost to their personal lives (much the same as Private Sector).

unmarkedbythat · 21/11/2020 17:12

Tories gonna Tory, what did people expect? And then you get the MN Tories having tantrums because people think badly of them for voting Tory. This is why we think badly of you. Because you vote for a shower of shits.

Coffeeandcocopops · 21/11/2020 17:25

Lots in the private sector may not get pay rises but the ones I know get bonuses every year. Look at the bankers,

hobbyiscodefordogging · 21/11/2020 17:38

@SentientAndCognisant you've never thought about all the people losing their jobs just now and felt grateful that you were still in paid employment? Do you realise how you come across, repeating so many times that you refuse to feel grateful or lucky for your circumstances? It sounds like you're in such a safe job that you can take it for granted, and it sounds very insensitive to other people who are not as fortunate as you to have kept their jobs. Not a week has gone by through this when I haven't felt grateful for being able to stay in work.

SentientAndCognisant · 21/11/2020 17:45

Do not paraphrase me wrongly to support your point. I never said any of that
I referred to me in 1st tense, I will not be told I’m lucky to have an arduous job
It’s not luck,it’s choice.choice I make freely. It’s a transaction my skills = a salary

jcyclops · 21/11/2020 17:49

@Waxonwaxoff0

The private sector isn't all the same! Plenty of people in the private sector only earn minimum wage, I am one of them, my wage doesn't rise in line with inflation either.
In April 2015 minimum wage was £6.50. It is now £8.72 - an increase of 34.2%. Inflation for the same period (CPIH) is 8.6%. People on minimum wage are one of very few groups whose wages have significantly outstripped inflation in recent years.
SentientAndCognisant · 21/11/2020 17:53

I am fortunate to be in stable employment, yes I am
Lucky implies a preferential gain, something beneficial and unearned. Something I should be grateful for

hobbyiscodefordogging · 21/11/2020 18:05

You don't feel grateful for being fortunate enough to stay in paid employment? That's very entitled, arrogant almost.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 21/11/2020 18:06

jcyclops then why do I still rely on working tax credit to get by?

laxxy · 21/11/2020 18:14

In April 2015 minimum wage was £6.50. It is now £8.72 - an increase of 34.2%.

Do you mean the national living wage? It's £8.72 if you're over 25.

Disgusting
VinylDetective · 21/11/2020 18:25

The majority voted for a lower tax system than what Corbyn was offering so that is what we’ve got

Not for long. Taxes are going up as sure as I’m sitting on my sofa.

Pomegranatespompom · 21/11/2020 18:42

@hobbyiscodefordogging you are being ridiculous and sound quite bitter. Please do apply for a job in the public sector, please do consider years of training (I have trained for 10 years to be in my current position), we have many vacancies and need help.
Please stop being unkind to be people who are trying their best in very difficult circumstances.
